When it comes to professional privileges, it is something I personally can not bank on. This is because naturally it comes with conditions. I know this because my mum is a counselor by profession and she does therapy for a lot of people. Although she would never disclose anything you tell her, if the law requires it, she would always obliged. Also, she has told me in the past that if she sees that she needs to let out a secret spoken to her in confidence in order to save a life, it is within her rights to disclose it in a way that would not expose the client. And if she sees that exposing the client is the only way possible to save a life, she would get a legal approval before doing because at the end of the day, a life would always come first. This is why I do not trust the process. For people who do not really have that deep of a secret, it is okay, but if you know that whatever secret you are sharing is so deep that it could turn tides in the wrong hands, it’s better you keep it unless you are ready to let the world know.

But then again, imagining a world where this law of client confidentiality does not apply is like imagining a world where people have no secrets. The hospitals will no longer feel safe, the law firms will no longer feel safe, no one would be able to trust the law. Even now we do not fully trust the law, so if such should happen, it would be harder to trust the law because you could visit the hospital today and see your medical report on social media. If doctors, lawyers and therapists should tell you the things they see every day, the things they have heard and people they have come across in their profession, you would be amazed how much is really happening in this world. Sometimes even therapists need therapy. The worst of them all are priests and pastors. These people hear things that baffle them to their core, at the end of the day they would need to seek guidance from those they consider superior if they see it is beyond them because there are things you will hear, if not experienced would not know the right solution to give.
Understanding that no one owes you anything is the best approach for me. Knowing that they do not have to keep your secrets, they do not even owe you an explanation because they weren’t the ones that forced you to tell them your secrets. If you found them and decided to tell them, you should bear the consequences. I guess I am not just too trusting of people in these things, so I prefer to keep to myself and only reveal things I am ready for the world to know. Pastors for example can use you as an example in a sermon, doctors can reference you when you are not there, your lawyer can sell you out at the right price. This world is wicked, and you do not know what could happen with the things you say.
