When it comes to differentiating the kinds of music we had in those days and the ones we have currently, a lot has changed, and the differences are very clear and easily identifiable.
In some of my articles, I usually compare both sides, and sometimes I'm found picking sides, while in others, I just have to weigh the balance and not take anything away from either side.

The one I want to focus on today in this article is the shortness of modern-day music. I remember writing something similar before, and I had some friends come at me, insisting that the shorter, the better. Wow!Image from thread
Let me start by citing this trending music clip that was released a few hours ago at the moment of writing this.

“With You” by Davido and Omah Lay.

When this song was released, and even up till this moment, it has been the biggest track on the 5ive Album. It was so well-crafted, but it's so short that after you've listened, you just wish it lasted longer because you can't get enough of it.
The video is out, and when I watched it, I had goosebumps seeing the legendary Bright Chimezie in it. I just wished the music video lasted longer because I wanted to see more, dance more, and appreciate the craft even more — but the song is just too short. In the blink of an eye, it's over. The song and the video are just 2 minutes and a few seconds long.

Years back, songs we knew were a minimum of 3 minutes, and some even got to 4 minutes — and they were good and entertaining.
I love the olden days' type; it gave room for proper expression, both in the lyrics and the sound. You know, there are some songs where you just want to listen and enjoy the craft of the sound. Yeah, that's it.

I'm not taking you far, let me cite a Davido song again, titled “FIA.”

This song is 3 minutes plus, and it's a solo track, not one where Davido featured someone. The song is satisfying because it allowed full expression. It wasn’t rushed, both in the sound and in the lyrics.

While others may say that the new trend of 2-minute songs is good and that there’s nothing wrong with it, I'm of the opinion that it should be like it was back then, say a minimum of 3 minutes.

The most shocking thing is that the trend of 2-minute songs in this modern age makes everyone want to go into music, especially with the fact that they don’t need to do much or put in more effort in crafting good lyrics — and then they massively promote it on social platforms, and it becomes popular. The whole thing is crazy.

I'm not discrediting people’s craft, but it’s not nice at all to just hop into the studio and record 30 seconds of lyrics and be done. They’re killing the culture of music.

Well, maybe they make it that short so people would want more and keep anticipating a song release from them.

Again, I won’t fail to mention one of the songs I fell in love with — even though I initially didn’t like the artist — “Laho” by Shallipopi.

This song got me, but it’s too short too. Just 2 minutes 🥲
