Assumptions Can Be Dangerous

One thing I really don't like about some people is when they make assumptions without bothering to check the facts first. You know those situations where someone assumes you know something just because, in their mind, you should know it? Or they hear something about you and instead of asking you directly, they just believe it and start telling other people?

That kind of thing really annoys me. Sometimes people can create a whole story based on something they don't even know for sure. They see one little thing, make their own conclusion, and suddenly their conclusion becomes the truth. And that is how rumors start.

Someone hears something from someone else. They add their own interpretation to it. Another person hears it and adds something else. Before you know it, the story has completely changed, but people are still talking about it as if they were there when it happened.

What I find frustrating is that some people don't even think about the damage this can cause.

Maybe they assume you did something you didn't do. Maybe they assume you said something you never said. Maybe they assume you know something that you actually have no idea about. And instead of asking you, they go ahead and make up their own explanation. Why? Why is it so difficult to simply ask?

If you want to know something about me, ask me. If you hear something about me and you are not sure whether it's true, ask me. If you think I did something, ask me before you judge me. I honestly don't understand why some people would rather believe an assumption than have a simple conversation.

And let's be honest, none of us knows everything. Sometimes someone says, "Don't you know about this?" and the honest answer is, "No, I don't." There is nothing wrong with that. Not knowing something doesn't mean you are pretending. It doesn't mean you are hiding something. It simply means you don't know.

I also think we need to be more careful about repeating things we hear. Just because someone told you something doesn't automatically make it true. People can misunderstand situations. People can exaggerate. People can leave out important details. And sometimes people simply lie.

So before passing something around, maybe take a second and ask yourself. Do I actually know this, or am I just assuming? That little question can save a lot of unnecessary drama.

Personally, I would rather admit that I don't know something than confidently spread something that isn't true. And I would rather ask someone directly than judge them based on a story somebody else told me.

We really need to get better at checking facts before forming opinions about people. Because once a rumor is out there, saying "I was only assuming" doesn't always undo the damage.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is simply pause, ask questions, and remember that your assumption is not automatically a fact.

Thank for checking on my post and have a wonderful day
