One of my favourite foods is rice and beans. It may seem simple to some people, but to me it carries a lot of meaning, comfort, and memories. It is the kind of meal that doesn’t need anything fancy to feel complete. Just a warm plate of rice mixed with well-seasoned beans is enough to make me feel at home and satisfied.

My love for rice and beans actually comes from my grandmother. She absolutely loves this dish and, in fact, she can hardly eat rice without adding beans to it. For her, it is not just a preference, it is like her daily comfort food, something she has eaten for as long as I can remember. Whenever she asked what will you eat, rice and beans are almost always in the options of the meals she will mention. The smell of it cooking in her kitchen instantly reminds me of her warmth and presence.

Growing up, I was very close to my grandmother. I was often called her “pet” in a loving way because I would always follow her around and prefer spending time with her over anything else. Because of that closeness, I naturally started eating whatever she ate. I didn’t see it as just copying her,I saw it as a way of staying connected to her. If she was eating rice and beans, I was eating rice and beans. It became our shared tradition without even being planned.

I still remember sitting beside her in the kitchen while she cooked. She would move slowly but carefully, always making sure the food was seasoned just right. Sometimes she would let me help stir the pot or taste the food to see if they were ready. Those small moqments made me feel important and included, even though I was just a child then. The kitchen always felt warm, not just because of the cooking, but because of the laughter and conversations we shared there.

What makes rice and beans special to me is not just the taste, but the emotional connection attached to it. Every bite reminds me of my grandmother’s care, her habits, and the bond we shared. Even now, when I prepare or eat rice and beans, I feel like I am close to her again, even if she is not physically beside me at that moment.

To others, it may just look like a simple everyday meal, but to me it represents love, family, and belonging. It is a dish that has followed me through different stages of life, always bringing comfort and reminding me of where I come from.
