In today’s world, there is a lot of debate about whether skills or certificates matter more. Some people believe that certificates and formal education are the most important things for a successful career, while others believe that practical skills are more valuable. In my opinion, both skills and certificates are important, because we cannot always predict what will be needed in the future.

Nowadays, we often hear people say that “school is a scam” or that formal education is not necessary to become successful. It is true that some people have achieved great success without following the traditional educational path. They developed skills, started businesses, learned trades, became content creators, worked in technology, or used their talents to build successful careers. This shows us that education is not the only road to success.
However, I do not believe that education is useless. Education can provide knowledge, discipline, connections, and opportunities that may be difficult to get elsewhere. A certificate can also become important when applying for certain jobs or opportunities. Someone may be very talented and skilled, but there are situations where an employer or organization will still ask for proof of formal education or professional training.
This is why I believe that having both skills and certificates can give a person an advantage. Skills show what you can do, while certificates show what you have studied or been trained to do. For example, someone may be an excellent computer programmer because they taught themselves through online courses and personal projects. They may be able to compete successfully with someone who has a computer science degree. However, there may still be certain companies or positions that require a formal qualification. In that situation, the certificate can become useful.
At the same time, having a certificate without practical skills can also be a problem. A person can have many certificates but struggle to perform simple tasks in the real world. Employers need people who can solve problems, communicate effectively, work with others, adapt to change, and produce results. These are skills that cannot always be measured by a certificate.
I also believe that we should not put all our hopes on education alone. Not everyone will become successful through the same path. Some people will succeed through university, while others will succeed through learning a trade, starting a business, developing a technical skill, or gaining experience. What matters is being willing to learn and improve.
Therefore, I would not say that school is a scam, and I would not say that certificates are everything either. We all have different paths in life, and we cannot all make it through education alone. That is why skills are also very important. At the same time, who knows when a certificate may be needed, even when we already have the skills?
I believe the best approach is to have both. Learn a skill, gain experience, and if possible, get the certificate too. A certificate may open a door, while your skills can help you prove that you deserve to stay in the room. In today’s changing world, having both qualifications and practical skills can give us more choices and prepare us for opportunities we may not even know are coming.
