The month of May 2026 is finally coming to an end, and while economists debated inflation, politicians pretended to understand artificial intelligence, and influencers continued selling “life-changing” water bottles, one event rose above the chaos and united humanity in collective secondhand embarrassment.
This May almost gave me high blood pressure.
I travelled with my children to my husband’s hometown because of the Eid-ul-Adha celebration. Anybody that travels during festive already knows how garages behave during that time. Noise everywhere, drivers dragging passengers, conductors shouting prices like auction people.

So when we got to the garage, we asked one driver how much he was taking. The price he called was too much for me. I started pricing like a proper African mother. We argued small, later we finally agreed on a particular amount.
The funny thing is that the driver didn’t complain again throughout the journey. He was even acting calm, so in my mind everything was settled already.
My children slept for most of the trip while I was there thinking about finally reaching and resting because the stress was too much.
Now tell me why the real problem waited until we reached our destination.
Immediately we came down, I gave the driver the exact amount we agreed on. This man looked at the money and his face changed immediately.
He said, “Madam this money is not complete.”
At first I thought he was joking. I reminded him about our agreement at the garage, but he refused completely. Before I even understood what was happening, this man grabbed one of my bags and started dragging it.
Omo, I held my bag instantly too.
If he dragged it one side, I dragged it back. People started looking at us because it was becoming serious embarrassment already. Me and this man were outside doing wrestling competition with my luggage.
Honestly, I was still angry more than scared at that point. But while dragging the bag, my hand got scratched badly and I noticed small blood.
That was when fear entered my body immediately.
I just shouted without thinking:
“Help! Kidnapper! Kidnapper!”
Ahhh
I don’t even know why that was the exact word that came out from my mouth.
If you know the situation of things in this country now, you will understand that people are very sensitive to that word. Before I could blink, men started rushing from different directions.
Some came with sticks. Some carried stones. One man even carried plastic chair. Another person removed his belt like he was fully prepared. The driver that was shouting before suddenly became quiet.
Everybody surrounded him a asking
questions at the same time.
“Na who be kidnapper?”“What happened?”“Call police!”“Beat am first!”
At that moment, I even started begging people to calm down because the whole thing was becoming too serious. Imagine all this because of transport fare disagreement.
Thank God some older men nearby came and settled everything before innocent person would go and collect serious beating.
At the end of everything, the driver still collected the same amount we agreed on from the garage. So all that dragging and shouting was for nothing. Honestly, May 2026 gave me enough drama.
Thanks for checking on my blog and have a wonderful day
