One of the Korean drama I enjoyed watching this week is The WONDERfools (2026), and honestly, it’s a really fun watch and kind of bit different from normal comedy dramas I have watched. It blends comedy, fantasy, action, and emotional moments, all set in late 1990s Korea during the whole Y2K era panic. That setting alone already gives it a unique vibe.

The story takes place in 1999 in Haeseong City, when everyone is lowkey stressed about the upcoming new millennium and the so-called Y2K disaster. In the middle of all that anxiety, a group of ordinary people suddenly end up with strange superpowers after a mysterious event. The thing is, they don’t turn into the usual polished superheroes. They are awkward, confused, and kind of a mess with their abilities, which actually makes things funnier and more unpredictable.

What really makes the drama work is the characters. Eun Chae-ni, the main lead, is impulsive and a bit chaotic, but she is also surprisingly strong emotionally. Around her, you have got a group of misfits who don’t really fit the “hero” mold at all. They argue, make mistakes, act selfish sometimes, but also step up when it matters. That mix makes them feel pretty real and easy to root for.

The show also does a nice job balancing its tones. One minute it’s leaning into superhero-style action or mystery, and the next it’s pure comedy or even emotional scenes that hit harder than expected. It never feels stuck in one mood, which keeps it interesting.

The 1999 setting is another highlight. There is this constant “end of the world is coming” feeling in the background, even when nothing big is happening. It adds a nostalgic and slightly chaotic energy that fits the story really well. You get this mix of everyday small-town life and weird supernatural chaos happening on top of it, which makes the world feel lively and a bit unpredictable.

The WONDERfools stands out because it doesn’t try to be a typical superhero story. The characters are flawed, messy, and sometimes ridiculous, but that is exactly what makes it fun to watch. It’s got humor, heart, nostalgia, and just enough chaos to keep you hooked.
