When Choosing Yourself Means Disappointing Others

Seriously, I’ve heard people say that people change, but I don’t think I really understood what they meant until I started experiencing it myself.

Sometimes you look at someone you have known for years and suddenly realize that things are not the same anymore. The person has changed. Maybe you have changed too. And honestly, that realization can hurt.

I used to think that if you cared about people enough, you would always find a way to keep things the same. You would adjust, forgive, explain yourself, and try to make sure nobody felt disappointed by you.

But I’m slowly learning that life doesn’t really work that way.

There comes a time when you have to start making decisions based on what is right for you, even when those decisions are not what other people want.

And that is not always easy, sometimes choosing yourself will disappoint people. Sometimes saying no will make someone think you have changed.

Sometimes setting a boundary will make people question your character because they were comfortable with the version of you that had no boundaries. But I’m beginning to understand that disappointing someone doesn’t automatically mean you have done something wrong.

You can be a good person and still say no. You can love someone and still need space from them. You can care about someone and still decide that a particular relationship is no longer healthy for you. You can forgive someone without giving them the same access to you that they had before.

I think one of the hardest things about growing is realizing that you cannot keep everyone happy. No matter how much you explain yourself, someone might still misunderstand you. No matter how much you try to do the right thing, someone might still see you as the bad person in their story.

And at some point, you have to be okay with that.

I’m not saying we should become careless about people's feelings or use “boundaries” as an excuse to treat people badly. We should still be kind, we should still take responsibility when we hurt someone. We should still try to communicate properly.

But there is also a difference between being considerate and constantly abandoning yourself just to keep other people comfortable. I’m learning that peace sometimes comes with difficult decisions.

It comes with saying things you don't really want to say. It comes with walking away from certain situations. It comes with accepting that some people may not understand your choices.

And yes, it can feel lonely sometimes.

But I would rather be honest with myself than spend my life pretending to be someone I’m not just because people prefer that version of me. People change, I change, You change. Maybe that is just part of life.

So if choosing yourself means disappointing someone, it doesn't necessarily mean you are a bad person.
You are allowed to have boundaries. You are allowed to protect your peace. You are allowed to grow.

And you are allowed to become a different version of yourself, even if some people don't understand it. Sometimes, you have to disappoint others to stop disappointing yourself.

Thank for checking on my post and have a wonderful day
