Have you ever looked at someone and thought, “This person really has their life figured out”?
Maybe they have expensive cars, a beautiful home, designer clothes, and everything around them looks perfect. From the outside, it can seem like they have achieved the kind of financial success many people dream about.
But sometimes, what we see is not the full story.
I have someone like that in my life. From afar, you would think he had everything figured out. He drove expensive cars, and his home was furnished beautifully with some of the best things money could buy.
But I later discovered that the reality was very different. The apartment was rented, and many of the things that made his life look so luxurious had been bought with loans.
Honestly, every time I looked at him, I found myself praying, “God, please don't let me live like this.”
Not because there is anything wrong with having nice things. There is absolutely nothing wrong with driving a nice car, living in a beautiful home, or enjoying the good things life has to offer.
What scared me was the idea of looking financially successful while secretly struggling to maintain the appearance.
That experience really changed the way I think about wealth. I have come to realize that looking rich and actually being financially comfortable are two very different things.
Social media has made this even more obvious. Every day, we see people showing us the best parts of their lives. Someone is on holiday in Dubai. Someone else just bought a new phone. Another person is showing off a new car, a beautiful house, or an expensive dinner.
We see the picture, but we don't see the bank account behind the picture. And honestly, that can put a lot of pressure on people.
Sometimes, people start feeling like they are falling behind because everyone else seems to be doing better. You begin asking yourself, “Why don't I have what they have?” Before you know it, you start spending money just to look like you are doing well.
Some people buy expensive clothes while struggling with unpaid bills. Some take expensive trips on credit just to create beautiful memories for social media. Others buy things they don't really need because they don't want people to think they are struggling.
But what is the point of looking rich if you are constantly worried about money when nobody is watching?
Personally, I don't want that life. I want to be financially capable, not just financially impressive.
I would rather have a simple life where I can pay my bills, save money, handle an unexpected expense, support the people I love when necessary, and still sleep peacefully at night.
I don't need everyone to think I am rich. I want to be able to afford the things I enjoy without having to borrow money just to maintain an image.
A person driving an old car may have more money saved than the person driving a brand-new luxury car. Someone wearing simple clothes may have investments and savings that nobody knows about.
And someone posting pictures from expensive holidays might be dealing with serious financial problems behind the scenes.
This is why I try not to judge people's financial situations based on what I see online. Social media is mostly a highlight reel. People don't usually post the credit card bills they are struggling to pay, the loans they are servicing, or the sleepless nights caused by financial pressure.
Of course, enjoy your nice things if you can genuinely afford them. There is nothing wrong with that. But I never want maintaining an image to become more important than maintaining my financial stability.
For me, real wealth is having choices. It is having savings. It is being able to deal with an emergency without falling apart financially. It is being able to say, “I can't afford this right now,” without feeling ashamed. It is being able to enjoy life without constantly worrying about the next payment.
Most importantly, it is having peace of mind. So, if I had to choose between looking rich and actually being financially comfortable, my choice is simple, I would rather have the money than look like I have the money.
I don't want to impress people with a lifestyle that is secretly putting me under financial pressure. I want to build a life that is genuinely stable, even if nobody is watching.
Because, people only see what you choose to show them. I would rather build a life that feels good when the camera is turned off.
