This tragic event occurred on November 27, 1871. Eight medical students from the University of Havana were falsely accused of desecrating the tomb of the Spanish journalist Gonzalo Castañón. In spite of the defense and all the people being against this accusation and no proof of the outrage was presented, the students were condemned to death and executed by the Havana Volunteers. This act of injustice and cruelty deeply marked the history of Cuba and is remembered every year as a sad anniversary.
