This series has been around for quite some time now, and it managed to generate quite a bit of controversy at the time. It's a raw, far from pretty story, and it doesn't have a happy, redemptive ending. It has both positive and negative aspects, and in this post, I'll share my opinion with you including spoilers. Also, keep in mind that I'll focus only on the first season.
Hannah seemed like a typical high school girl. She had her quirks, like everyone else, but overall, she led a fairly ordinary life. However, life can be cruel, even for someone so young, so after several traumatic experiences, the girl decides to make a decision that would put an end to everything. Hannah takes her own life.
Some time later, amid the commotion, her closest friend, Clay, finds a mysterious box in his yard containing seven double-sided tapes. Curious, Clay begins to listen to them, but what he never expected was to hear Hannah's voice, as she explains in detail the reasons for her decision.
Hannah experiences situations that would affect anyone's mental health, but being vulnerable as a teenager, the consequences escalate significantly. Of course, this doesn't seem like a sudden decision; on the contrary, the series does a good job of showing how the girl's stability gradually deteriorates, accumulating unresolved emotions and traumas. Hannah Baker commits suicide as a result of a series of traumatic events and abuse she experienced in high school. These events include sexual abuse, bullying, assault, and a hostile school environment.
Hannah tried; she turned to everyone she could, even a professional counselor at her high school, and perhaps because of that prejudice that "teenagers overreact to anything", no one really paid attention to it. Only until the very end, when there was nothing left to do... Honestly, in her last attempt to be strong and move forward, when she went to the counselor and he did nothing but judge her, I felt anger and frustration, since it's a situation that is quite common in real life.
So the story starkly reflects that struggle, that attempt to stay on your feet when the context doesn't support you, and what ultimately happens all too often, as not everyone can fight alone for so long. The suicide scene is disturbing but realistic, and perhaps it will help some people realize how important it is to support those who find themselves in a bad situation or emotionally unstable, as well as to highlight the severity of such a decision and the consequences.
That's why, when making such a raw production, care must be taken with the type of audience it's exposed to. If they wanted to keep it explicit, it should never have been allowed to be seen by teenagers, who are a highly impressionable population. On the other hand, if they wanted young people to understand the consequences of such horrific acts as abuse and harassment, then they shouldn't have been so explicit about the suicide, but rather about the circumstances that led to that decision, focusing more on those actions than the consequences for the victim.
But obviously, when it comes to portraying such delicate topics in a major Hollywood production, it's difficult to avoid making mistakes, since addressing them with the necessary delicacy can sometimes become ambiguous. Being explicit helps convey a clear message, but at the same time, it can encourage repetition. Perhaps the solution is to target audiences prepared to deal with such topics, but it's hard to prevent other types of people from watching a series made by a platform as large as Netflix.
For all these reasons, the series, at least in its first season, which is the one that truly addresses the main story, has its pros and cons. Would I recommend it? Well, only to people with a certain level of maturity and emotional stability, who are willing to see such a raw story. Would I recommend it to a teenage audience? Absolutely not, so its producers made a huge mistake in targeting that audience specifically, since its rating isn't explicit enough.

Esta serie tiene ya bastante tiempo desde que salió y en su momento logró generar bastante controversia. Es una historia cruda, para nada bonita, que tampoco tiene un final feliz de redención. Tiene tanto sus puntos positivos como negativos, y en este post les comentaré mi opinión incluyendo spoilers. También tengan presentes que me enfocaré solo en la primera temporada.
Hannah parecía ser la típica adolescente de secundaria. Tenía sus peculiaridades, como cualquier persona, pero en general llevaba una vida bastante común. Sin embargo, la vida puede ser muy cruel, incluso para alguien tan jóven, por lo que luego de varias experiencias traumáticas la chica decide tomar una decisión que le pondría fin a todo. Hannah se quita la vida.
Un tiempo después, en medio de la conmoción, su amigo más cercano, Clay, encuentra una misteriosa caja en su patio, que tiene guardadas siete cintas de doble cara. Con curiosidad Clay comienza a escucharlas, pero lo que jamás espero fue escuchar la voz de Hannah, quien explica detalladamente las razones de su decisión.
Hannah vive situaciones que afectarían la salud mental de cualquier persona, pero al ser alguien vulnerable por ser apenas una adolescente, las consecuencias escalaron bastante. Claro, esto no parece una decisión que saliera de forma repentina, al contrario, la serie hace un buen trabajo en demostrar como poco a poco la estabilidad de la chica se va deteriorando, acumulando emociones y traumas no resueltos. Hannah Baker se suicida como resultado de una serie de eventos traumáticos y abusos que experimentó en la secundaria. Estos eventos incluyen etiquetas sexuales, acoso, agresiones y un ambiente escolar hostil.
Hannah lo intentó; recurrió a quienes pudo, incluso a un consejero profesional de la secundaria, y quizás por ese prejuicio de «los adolescentes exageran las cosas» nadie realmente le dio importancia. Solo hasta el final, cuando ya no había nada que hacer... Sinceramente en su último intento por ser fuerte y seguir adelante, cuando acude al consejero y éste no hace más que juzgarla, sentí rabia y frustración, puesto que es una situación que en la vida real es bastante frecuente.
Así que la historia refleja crudamente esa lucha, ese intento de mantenerse en pie cuando el contexto no te ayuda, y lo que finalmente ocurre con demasiada frecuencia, pues no todos pueden luchar solos por tanto tiempo. La escena del suicidio es perturbadora pero realista, y quizás ayude para que algunas personas se den cuenta de lo importante que es apoyar a aquellos que se encuentren en una mala situación o emocionalmente inestables, así como para evidenciar la severidad de tal decisión y las consecuencias.
Es por eso que al hacer una producción tan cruda se debe tener cuidado con el tipo de público al que se expone. Si querían mantener lo explícito, nunca debió permitirse que fuese visto por adolescentes que son una población altamente influenciable. Por otro lado, si querían que los jóvenes entendieran las consecuencias de actos tan horribles como el abuso y el acoso, entonces no debían ser tan explícitos con el suicidio, sino con las circunstancias que llevaron a esa decisión, enfocados más en esas acciones que en las consecuencias en la víctima.
Pero evidentemente, en cuanto a reflejar estos temas tan delicados en una producción grande de Hollywood es difícil no cometer un error, puesto que tocarlos con la delicadeza necesaria a veces se vuelve ambiguo. Lo explícito funciona para dejar en claro un mensaje, pero a la vez puede incentivar a repetir lo que se ve. Quizá la solución sea dirigirse al público preparado para tratar esos temas, pero es difícil que otro tipo de personas no lleguen a ver una serie hecha por una plataforma tan grande como Netflix.
Por todo esto, la serie, al menos en su primera temporada que es la que realmente trata la historia central, tiene sus pros y contras. ¿Yo la recomendaría? Pues solo a personas que tengan cierto nivel de madurez y estabilidad emocional, que estén dispuestas a ver una historia así de cruda. ¿La recomendaría al público adolescente? Absolutamente no, por lo que sus productores cometieron un gran error en dirigirla a ese público en específico, puesto que su clasificación no es lo suficientemente explícita.
