Introduction
Economic empowerment of any individual is an imperative to achive self-sufficiency. But economic empowerment should not be seen only from the stand point of sustenance, it is much wider and certainly has a spill over effect into the other dimensions of social arrangement.
In that context, we often contemplate upon employment opportunities, and when we seek to make it more organized with intangible qualities like skill, technical know-how, leadership qualities, etc, it enters into the domain of Career, Profession, etc.
According to philosopher Immanuel Kant, dignity of an individual is underpinned by three fundamental aspects:-
- economic independence
- individual identity
- social acceptance
A career is definitely an important aspect of Humans in the modern civilized society and in particular the capitalist world(even with the strands of welfare state) to determine the other key dimensions in the society such as
- social acceptance
- social capital
- individual identity and dignity
It is pertient to note that even from the stand point of socio-economic template of the society, economic dimension is the predominant aspect of society which re-order, reset and determines the social arrangement and social relationship.
Determinants of Career-choice
- Wider Options
- Secured job
- Sunrise- sector
- Sustainability
A sunrise sector is characterized by emerging industry/sector with huge economic opportunities and are generally governed by large market demand, sustainability, scalability, innovative technologies, etc.
Definition of Sustainability- Meeting the present needs without compromising the needs of the future generation.
Current landscape and status interface
The technological landscape has already seen a paradigm shift from the traditional, old, obsolete, ad-hoc and archaic template to a more transparent, inclusive, scalable, modern template with the aid of AI, IoT, Blockchain technology.
The decentralized technology has been constantly producing a new middle class who have redefined the way the term career hitherto have been perceived.
The traditional nomenclature of career might be a limited doctrine of a 4-walled office room, a set up of table, chair, laptop, etc and housed with manpowers. The traditional notions have been increasingly becoming fossil, because Work-from-Home has been rising into prominence since COVID-19.
What was utopian to many until 2019 is now being widely accepted as a the new frontier of career, even more so it has also created opportunity for the housewives to make themselevs self-sufficient.
All these arguments are not void, they are substantiated by data.
However, the choice of a career is not solely determined by "what options do we have", it is also vetted through "whether it is a secured job". Millions lost their full time job during COVID-19, even though we have recoverd from pandemic, the economic strain has not been completely recovered particularly for the poor and middle class. Therefore the question of "secured job" always takes the center stage when it comes to making a choice.
Now the third aspect of career option is "whether it is a sun-rise sector"-- the nature of the job should have a future to ensure sustainability.
Some sectors are becoming obsoltete with the advance of technology and from the stand point of "needs of the current & future generation" whereas some new frontiers are being opened up, which has a future and can potentially become a huge opportunity if we could align our expetise, skill, passion with those sectors.
What is my position and what choice do I want to make?
I have already completed my graduation, and now pursuing post-graduation. At the same time I am looking for a secured job, particularly in Government. So I am preparing myself for the exam.
However I need to meet my ends. Initially I was thinking to join a part time job. but after thorough contemplation I decided to make Blogging a part time hustle, because that will save a lot of time and energy to align my prepration time for the exam. I just a need around 115-150 USD a month for survival. I can easily get 150 USD part time job in the real world, but that will consume a lot of time. So I chose to settle with digital part time job.
Furthermore, I must also admit that content creation and Blogging is my interest areas, so once I get a full time, and secured job I would still continue my blogging hustle but I will not be dependent on the earning in that case.
Conclusion
Having clarity on career is not just desirable it is essential. We must have the basic understanding of where the world is heading into, what skills and expertise do I need to have to align with the pace of the world and to make it fulfilling.
Career choice is also goverened by demand/supply, simply because we can not make a choice of nowhere, we have to make a choice from the available onces therefore a basic understanding of the market paradigm could be handy.
