Something interesting happened in the Splinterverse yesterday, a change was implemented in the battle system, the SPS reward pool for ranked battles was no longer divided by league, and was instead one single reward pool for Modern format and a separate, single reward pool for Wild format.

This change while not the only one, really set players on a frenzy, people were beginning to earn SPS in quantity that’s never been seen, for many, it was a wake up call, along side other changes that came along, the way battles are fought might be changed forever.
Let’s talk about it.

Simplification and League Limits Removal

The most striking change is the removal of league limitations for ranked battles. No longer will your league status restrict you to certain opponents or cap the level of cards you can play. This move towards a more inclusive and unrestricted battle environment means that your strategic choices, rather than your league, dictate your path to victory.

This simplification has a dual advantage. It not only makes the game more accessible to newcomers but also ensures that veteran players can fully leverage their card collections. The prospect of using any card, at any level, opens up new strategic possibilities and makes each match a test of true skill and cunning.

However, this change also brings its challenges. The absence of league-based matchmaking means players might face opponents with significantly higher card levels early on. While this democratizes gameplay, it also steepens the learning curve for novices who must now contend with a wider variety of strategies and card combinations.

Unified SPS Reward Pool

Another notable change is the consolidation of the SPS reward pool. Instead of being split across leagues, there's now a single seperate reward pool for both the Modern and Wild formats. This changes the game for players at all levels, as it means that rewards are now more evenly distributed, based on participation and performance, rather than league ranking.

This model encourages more gameplay and competition, as every battle contributes to your potential rewards. It's a move that rewards active participation and strategic gameplay over simply grinding within a specific league.

The potential downside here is that with rewards no longer tied to league rankings, the incentive to progress through the leagues might diminish for some players. The thrill of climbing the ranks and the rewards that come with it have always been a driving force for many in the Splinterlands community.

Overhaul of the Rating System

The shift to a flat rating system, where wins and losses carry equal weight, is another significant change. This system aims to make matchmaking fairer by removing the disproportionate impact of unexpected losses due to RNG (Random Number Generator) elements, which was a common critique of the previous ELO system.

This change is particularly intriguing because it emphasizes consistent performance over the luck of the draw. It encourages players to engage in battles more frequently, knowing that a single loss won't drastically set them back. Yet, it also means that climbing the leaderboard will require a more sustained effort, potentially making the top ranks more dynamic but also more challenging to reach.

Adjusted Energy Costs and League Resets

Adjustments to energy costs and the reset system are also part of the overhaul. By aligning energy costs more closely with player progression and ensuring league resets are consistent, Splinterlands is making a concerted effort to balance the playing field and make the game more rewarding for consistent play.

These adjustments mean players will need to be more strategic about when and how often they play their matches, adding another layer of strategy to the game's economic aspect.

Final Thoughts

The overall direction is promising. The focus on simplification, fairness, and encouraging active engagement speaks to a desire to grow the community and keep the game fresh and exciting.

Together, we have an opportunity for all of us in the Splinterverse to rethink our strategies, engage with the game in new ways, and continue to build our legacies in those evolving universe.
