Hello friends, This is @mmiya from #bangladesh.
Dear Hive enthusiasts, today, while visiting a paddy field in front of our Madrasa, I spotted a rather unusual insect. I have come across such insects in various places before, but today I observed one crawling over a panicle of rice. A quick Google search revealed that it is known as the "rice ear-cutting caterpillar" (or "panicle-cutting caterpillar"). In many regions, it is also referred to as a "soldier worm" or by other local names; these insects are known to cause significant damage to rice crops.
I first noticed the insect on a rice panicle. After I managed to take two photos with my mobile phone, it fell onto a dry leaf below. When I picked up the leaf, the insect crawled toward the tip, allowing me to capture another image. These insects typically remain hidden in the soil, emerging only at night or on cloudy days. I hope you enjoy the photos of this insect that I’ve shared today.
