The most common sight when crossing the Bosphorus is not a beautiful view of ancient monuments - people can see the hustle and bustle of huge cargo ports right away. Istanbul is a living museum of ancient history, but at the same time, it is a special economic and commercial center.
Being a link between Europe and Asia, Istanbul has many large port facilities through which the local cargo turnover passes. The largest of them is the natural harbor of the Marmara Sea called Ambari. By the way, most of Turkey's cargo transportation infrastructure is concentrated in Istanbul, as evidenced by the fact that more than 550 million tons of goods pass through Turkish ports on average every year. About 13 million containers, that is, record-breaking volumes, were handled in Istanbul's port terminals in recent years.
The local maritime terminal handles thousands of cargo ships arriving and departing every day, with traffic going to dozens of countries in Europe, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Middle East, North Africa, East and Southeast Asia, and North America. With an average port call of about 1,500 tons, this means that hundreds of thousands of tons of cargo, from industrial equipment to automotive parts, are transported through these waterways every day. This is the importance of one of the busiest shipping routes in the world, connecting seaports with specific cargo traffic flows.
