In ancient times, people built colossal stone walls, imposing ramparts, and fortresses to protect their cities and civilizations from foreign invasions and enemies. Similarly, our soul and mind create barriers to shield us from the emotional attacks that hurt and damage us from within.

The emotional walls can be built from the outside (unfair judgments, destructive criticism, social pressures, expectations, and negative energies) or from within (self-criticism, guilt, anxiety, fear, and traumatic memories). These walls are raised to prevent further emotional damage and devastation.

The most common walls are built from “denial and indifference” when a person wears a mask of aloofness to avoid getting hurt by the surroundings’ harshness. Sometimes, people build “isolation and social detachment” as their fortress, believing that no one can understand them, and their seclusion is their best protection. Others build walls from “emotional suppression and excessive rationalization” to stop their true feelings from emerging and appearing vulnerable.

Like the ancient citadels that required gates to let the inhabitants enjoy the outside world, our fortress of defense must not prevent us from experiencing life’s beauty. By being aware of our psychological defense mechanism, we can replace unhealthy walls with conscious barriers that protect us from emotional damage while enjoying the ability to experience life.

Have you ever built emotional walls to protect yourself from emotional damage?
