When you live in a coastal city, there is always something extraordinary to see. As you know, because of the clean air typical for such places, the daytime sky is exceptionally clear and extends into the most amazing sunsets in bright colors of blue and orange.

Even though,

sunsets carry some strange melancholy, as if they held some old secrets from a forgotten place or time, buried deep inside every human soul, revealing themselves every evening as the sky turns to fiery gold and orange

There is something very philosophical about the mysterious allure of twilight, which undoubtedly affects every human in a different way. One might argue that it is because the setting sun symbolizes the end of something beautiful and unique in our lives. The sunset is nature’s way of telling us that it is time to move on. When watching the glowing orb slowly sinking into the endless black ocean on our coastal horizons, we have the strange and almost unbearable feeling of being incredibly small and insignificant in the greater scheme of things. We stare at the glowing colors of orange and red, overwhelmed with beautiful and frightening emotions that only come at the end of a long and tiring day. There is no way to deny that we feel incredibly sad, as if some eternal and unreplaceable part of us is dying with the sunset. We can only cherish the fleeting moment and the exquisite beauty of the bright colors, knowing we will most likely never witness anything as incredible and meaningful again in our lifetime.

However, if you are lucky enough to live in a coastal city like me with an endless view over the horizon, this feeling is much more intense. You simply gaze out at the dark waters while a distant ship slowly disappears into the sunset and suddenly realize that the most remarkable experience of seeing the bright colors of twilight is something every human throughout history has been able to see and feel the same way as you. This realization is deeply emotional and may give you a strange longing in your chest, as if you were to find that long-lost piece of yourself. The feeling of belonging to somewhere bigger and more meaningful than this world suddenly overwhelms you, and you remember that deep inside, you will always be a stranger on this planet with only the distant colors of sunset to guide you home.
