The film opens with a man sitting in an office as we watch him try to clean the sleeve of his shirt, which appears to be stained with something red. Immediately afterward, we see someone wake up from what appears to have been a dream, and we see him with someone else in a small plane flying over the cold mountains of Alaska. In Nightmute, this pair arrives at the police station as members of the LAPD: Will Dormer and Hap Eckhart. Both were called in to investigate the murder of a young woman named Kay Connell, who was found covered in bruises.

Once again, I’m bringing you another film by the great Christopher Nolan that I’ve never seen before in my life. However, knowing full well his talent as a director in his later films, I wanted to kick off this special series dedicated to him by watching and reviewing some of his early films. And it comes as no surprise to anyone just how talented Nolan is as a director when you take a close look at this gritty detective film, which seems to have become a cult classic in its own genre. Although it never became popular enough for someone like me to have seen it.
With an incredible cast and a plot that really draws you in, Insomnia is possibly one of the best psychological thrillers I’ve ever seen. I may be exaggerating a bit with what I just wrote, but among the things that fascinated me about this movie is the unique story of our protagonist, a renowned detective with a long career investigating homicide cases and more. Played by none other than Al Pacino, Detective Will Dormer is called in to investigate the case of a young woman from Alaska who has been brutally murdered.
De nuevo, les traigo otra película del gran Christopher Nolan que no he visto nunca antes en mi vida. Sin embargo, conociendo bien su talento como director en cintas posteriores, quise empezar este especial dedicado a él viendo y reseñando algunas de sus primeras películas. Y no es sorpresa de nadie el notable talento que tiene Nolan como director al fijarnos bien en esta cruda cinta detectivesca que parece se ha convertido en una obra de culto en su propio género. Aunque no llegó a ser tan popular como para que alguien como yo la viera.
Con un elenco increíble y una trama que te envuelve bastante bien, Insomnia es posiblemente una de las mejores películas de suspenso psicológico que he visto en mi vida. Puede que esté exagerando con lo que acabo de escribir, pero de entre las cosas que me fascinaron de esta película está el particular caso de nuestro protagonista, quien es un detective reconocido y con una larga carrera investigando casos de homicidio y demás. Interpretado por nada menos que Al Pacino, el detective Will Dormer es llamado por el caso de una chica de Alaska que ha sido brutalmente asesinada.

However, while searching for the suspected killer at a secluded cabin on a nearby island, the detective—along with his partner and other officers—waits for the man who had become involved in a secret relationship with the victim to appear. When they see him approaching the cabin, they hide and try to sneak up on him quietly, but a small mistake turns the situation into a chase that ends with one officer wounded and another dead. The problem is that the person who caused the latter officer’s death is his own partner, Detective Will Dormer.
I’ll be honest about this movie, and to that end, I want to clarify that I had very high expectations for it—not only because of Memento, but also because I saw that two great actors were part of the main cast: Al Pacino and Robin Williams. While the beginning was somewhat promising—thanks to how well it introduces the characters and explains this strange homicide case involving the young Kay Connell—it’s only after the scene I described above, involving the incident with Will’s partner, that the movie takes a plot twist completely different from what you’d expect at the start.
Sin embargo, durante la búsqueda del posible homicida en una cabaña apartada en una isla del lugar, el detective junto con su compañero y demás miembros oficiales esperan que aparezca el hombre que ha llegado a envolverse en una relación secreta con la víctima. Cuando lo ven acercarse a la cabaña, escondidos intentan acercarse sin hacer ruido, pero un pequeño error convierte la escena en una persecución que termina en un oficial herido y en otro oficial muerto. El problema es que, quien causó la muerte de este último oficial es su propio compañero, el detective Will Dormer.
Seré honesto con respecto a esta película y para eso les quiero aclarar que tuve muy altas expectativas de la misma no solo por Memento, sino también por ver que dos grandiosos actores formaban parte del elenco principal: Al Pacino y Robin Williams. Si bien el principio fue un poco prometedor debido a cómo la misma nos introduce muy bien a los personajes y nos explican este extraño caso de homicidio de la joven Kay Connell; no es sino después de la escena que les describí arriba del incidente con el compañero de Will que la película da un giro de trama completamente distinto a lo que uno espera al principio.

This really fascinated me, not only because we see a police officer—a detective—go through the same trauma and psychosis as the murderer and antagonist of this film, but also because we get to witness the nature of a cold, calculating killer like Walter Finch, played by the great Robin Williams. By the way, this is the first time I can remember seeing this great actor play a villain in a movie, so I suppose you can imagine how curious and excited I was when I watched it. But I think the best part of all was his chemistry with Al Pacino.
Watching them both act and go head-to-head in this film, with so many elements of psychological suspense and drama, is fascinating because it puts both good and evil into perspective in the same setting. Seeing how a hero—an officer admired by his younger colleagues—becomes a murderer, a liar, and an accomplice to a homicide is something that really makes you think. However, despite everything Will Dormer does to try to cover up the truth and pin the blame for his partner’s death on someone else, the ending reveals something much bigger and darker.
Esto me fascinó bastante, no solo porque vemos a un oficial, un detective pasar por el mismo trauma y psicosis que pasa el homicida y antagonista de esta película. Sino que también podemos presenciar cómo es la naturaleza de un asesino frío y calculador como lo es el caso de Walter Finch, quien es interpretado por el gran Robin Williams. Por cierto, es la primera vez que recuerdo ver a este gran actor hacer el papel de villano en una película, así que supongo tendrán una idea de la curiosidad y emoción que me causó esto al verla. Pero creo que lo mejor de todo fue la dupla que hizo con Al Pacino.
Verlos a ambos actuar y enfrentarse entre sí en esta película con tantos elementos de suspenso psicológico y drama es fascinante ya que nos pone en perspectiva tanto al bien como al mal en un mismo lugar. Ver cómo un héroe, un oficial admirado por otros compañeros más jóvenes convertirse en un asesino, mentiroso y cómplice de un homicidio es algo que te pone a pensar bastante. Sin embargo, a pesar de todo lo que hace Will Dormer para intentar encubrir la verdad y así culpar a alguien más por la muerte de su compañero, el final que nos dan nos revela algo mucho más grande y oscuro.

Obviously, I won’t say any more so as not to give away any spoilers; I’ll just say that this final revelation—about what the protagonist had already faced even before taking on this case—helps us understand why he was so eager to go unpunished for his initial crime. However, this event eats away at him psychologically and even physically, as we see him suffering from insomnia throughout the film due to his guilt. I think the theme of insomnia is a perfect narrative and psychological device for describing the protagonist’s mental and emotional state.
But the way Christopher Nolan portrays it in this film is far more fascinating—especially the way he distorts reality, making us witness the protagonist’s hallucinations and various signs of mental instability. There’s also the case of Walter Finch and how he repeatedly compares himself to Will Dormer because they’re both implicated in the same crime. But what caught my attention most about this character is how he manages to manipulate our protagonist from the very beginning with the classic “I know the truth” blackmail tactic, only to later use him to cover his own tracks.
No les diré más obviamente para no dar ningún spoiler, solo les diré que dicha revelación final de lo que el protagonista se ha enfrentado incluso antes de tomar este caso nos da a entender la razón del por qué su afán por quedarse impune ante su crimen del principio. Sin embargo, dicho suceso lo carcome por dentro psicológica y hasta físicamente ya que lo vemos sufrir de insomnio en toda la película debido a la culpa que tiene. Creo que el tema del insomnio es un recurso narrativo y psicológico perfectos para describir el estado mental y emocional del protagonista.
Pero la forma en la que Christopher Nolan nos lo muestra en esta película es mucho más fascinante. Sobre todo con la forma en la que deforma la realidad, haciéndonos ver las alucinaciones y los distintos problemas de desequilibrio que tiene el protagonista. También está el caso de Walter Finch y cómo se llega a compararse seguidamente con Will Dormer debido a que ambos comparten el mismo crimen. Pero lo que más me llamó la atención de este personaje es cómo logra manipular a nuestro protagonista desde un principio con el clásico chantaje de “yo sé la verdad” para luego utilizarlo y encubrirse.

As if all this weren’t enough, another narrative element that ties everything together in a grand finale is the investigation into the death of Detective Will Dormer’s partner, Hap Eckhart. This investigation is conducted by Will’s admirer, Detective Ellie Burr, who does an excellent job, clearly following her mentor’s advice. This subplot, which unfolds in the film while everything else is happening, is fascinating because we know that, in the end, the truth will come to light. But as if that weren’t enough, what we see in the finale is a showdown that forces us to confront the cruel and ironic reality of life.
I’m not much of a fan of superstitions or anything like that, but there’s one thing I do know: “No evil deed ever goes unpunished.” Criminals, murderers, and wrongdoers always get what they deserve sooner or later, and the ending of this movie is a clear example of that. I’m not really into watching detective movies, especially ones with psychological themes—which I think make them much more interesting than usual. But I admit that I was quite fascinated by this movie, both because of the story it tells and the excellent performances. I really don’t have any complaints about anything or anyone, to be honest.
Por si no fuera suficiente con todo esto, otro detalle narrativo que logra encerrarlo todo en un gran final es la misma investigación de la muerte del compañero del detective Will Dormer, Hap Eckhart. Esta investigación la hace la admiradora de Will, la detective Ellie Burr quien hace un muy buen trabajo, siguiendo claramente los consejos de su mentor. Esta subtrama que vemos desarrollarse en la película mientras sucede todo lo demás es fascinante ya que reconocemos que, al final, la verdad saldrá a la luz. Pero no conformes con esto, lo que vemos en el final es un enfrentamiento que nos pone a ver la cruel e irónica realidad de la vida.
No soy muy fan de las supersticiones ni nada de eso, pero algo sí sé y es que “toda mala acción jamás queda impune”. Los criminales, homicidas y malhechores siempre reciben su merecido tarde o temprano y el final de esta película es una muestra clara de esto. No soy mucho de ver películas de detectives y menos con temas psicológicos, lo cual considero lo hacen mucho más interesante de lo normal. Pero admito que me fascinó bastante ver esta película tanto por la historia que nos cuenta como también por las excelentes actuaciones que tiene. No tengo ninguna queja con nada ni con nadie, la verdad.

Last but not least (it’s been a while since I’ve written that phrase), let’s talk about another very noteworthy aspect of this film: its audiovisual elements. Christopher Nolan has always excelled in this area, but in these early films of his, we don’t see his talent as clearly as we will in his later works. Yet, just as he did before, this time he also made excellent use of the limited resources at his disposal to deliver an audiovisual spectacle that lets us experience everything the protagonist goes through.
I’m not just saying this because of the natural and excellent way he uses effects and camera angles to give us shots and perspectives that let us see things that can graphically represent what the protagonist is thinking and feeling. It’s also because of the way he uses the setting to reveal the complicated situation Will Dormer finds himself in. The fact that it was all filmed in Alaska—specifically in the Arctic Circle, where for part of the year the sun never sets and night is just like day.
Por último, pero no menos importante (tengo tiempo que no escribo esta frase), hablemos de otro detalle muy destacable de esta película y es su apartado audiovisual. Christopher Nolan siempre se ha destacado en esto, pero en estas primeras películas que ha hecho no notamos mucho su talento como veremos más adelante en sus siguientes películas. Pero así como lo hizo ya antes, está vez también jugó muy bien con los pocos recursos que tuvo a su alcance para darnos un espectáculo audiovisual que nos hiciera vivir todo lo que experimenta el protagonista de esta película.
No solo digo esto por la forma tan natural y excelente de utilizar los efectos y posiciones de la cámara para darnos planos y visiones que nos hacen ver cosas que pueden llegar a representar gráficamente lo que piensa y siente el protagonista. Sino también por la manera en la que utiliza el entorno para revelar la complicada situación en la que se encuentra Will Dormer. El hecho de que se haya grabado todo en Alaska, nada menos que en la parte del Círculo Polar Antártico donde parte del año el sol no se pone en todo el día y la noche es igual al día.

The hallucinations, sound effects, and other visual elements also help a lot. I was also very impressed that they didn’t hold back at all, even including photographs and uncensored, somewhat graphic scenes. Something I really liked about this is the way the film manages to show us the protagonist’s visual transformation as the days go by without him sleeping. The soundtrack doesn’t stand out as much as the rest, but it’s not that bad either, all things considered. Anyway, here’s another Christopher Nolan film that I recommend watching if you like detective stories.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the mystery and psychological thriller genres are concerned.
Las alucinaciones, los efectos de sonido y demás recursos visuales ayudan mucho también. También me impresionó mucho que no se hayan limitado a nada, incluyendo hasta fotografías y escenas sin censura y un tanto gráficas. Algo que me gustó mucho de esto es la forma en la que la película logra mostrarnos la transición de nuestro protagonista a nivel visual con el paso de los días que pasa sin dormir. La banda sonora no destaca tanto como el resto, pero tampoco está tan mal al final. En fin, aquí les dejo una película más de Christopher Nolan que les recomiendo ver si les gustan los casos detectivescos.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de misterio y suspenso psicológico.
