The film begins with a car full of armed men transporting three captives to an airstrip where a private plane awaits, carrying more armed men and what appears to be a CIA agent. The captives are taken aboard the plane with the rest of the group, and while they are flying over Uzbekistan, they are interrogated by the agent as they transport the nuclear physicist, Dr. Leonid Pavel. However, what they don’t know is that among the captives is the leader of the most wanted criminal group, Bane. He reveals himself to the others wearing his mask and promises to crash the plane.
La película inicia con un auto lleno de hombres armados llevando a tres personas capturadas vía a una pista de aviones donde se encuentra un avión privado con más hombres armados y lo que parece ser un agente de la CIA. If The Dark Knight is the pinnacle of superhero cinema and of this saga featuring the iconic DC Comics character, then this film is like the great fall and swift resurgence of Christopher Nolan’s Batman. I don’t consider it the best film in the trilogy—that honor goes to the previous installment—but I must say it’s better than the first one. I may be wrong about this, but in reality, this film is more like a continuation and conclusion of Batman Begins, since both its plot and some of its characters remind us of the beginnings of this great story.
I don’t have many fond memories of this movie, since its plot has many moments that, honestly, I didn’t entirely like. But, well, this is to be expected, given that the movie begins by showing us a protagonist who is no longer the hero we’ve come to know from previous films. After eight years of retirement, a broken leg, and considerable negligence on the part of Gotham City’s law enforcement—all of this led to the events that unfold over the course of the film’s more than two and a half hours. This premise is very different from what we saw in the previous film, where the protagonist was in top form, fighting crime while facing off against the greatest villain in history.
Si The Dark Knight es el pico máximo del cine de superhéroes y de esta saga del icónico personaje de DC Cómics, entonces esta película es como la gran caída y el pronto resurgir del gran Batman de Christopher Nolan. No la considero la mejor película de la trilogía, ya que ese puesto se lo lleva la anterior entrega, pero sí debo decir que es mejor que la primera entrega. Puede que me equivoque con esto, pero en realidad esta película es más como una continuación y cierre de Batman Begins debido a que tanto su trama como algunos de sus personajes nos recuerdan a dichos inicios de esta grandiosa historia.
No tengo muchos buenos recuerdos de esta película ya que su trama posee muchos momentos que, honestamente, no me gustaron del todo. Pero, bueno, es de esperarse esto al ver que la película inicia mostrándonos a un protagonista ya dejó de ser el héroe que hemos conocido en películas anteriores. Luego de 8 años de retiro, una pierna rota y bastante negligencia de parte de la ley de Ciudad Gótica, todo esto ocasionó lo que ocurre en las más de dos horas y media de película. Esta premisa es muy distinta a lo que llegamos a ver en la cinta anterior donde el protagonista estaba en plena forma, luchando contra el crimen mientras se enfrentaba al mejor villano de la historia.

On the other hand, in this third installment of the saga, we see Christian Bale’s Batman face off against “the great Bane” we’ve come to know, and it ends in the worst possible way. The film portrays this event as a massive and devastating downfall, where literally everything seems completely lost for our protagonist. I repeat, I understand that this is the film’s objective: to show us the massive downfall of Gotham’s iconic hero and everything he has built following the tragic ending of the previous installment. Let’s just say that, in this sense, this film ties in very well with the previous one.
With this, we can see the Joker’s great victory in The Dark Knight as everything unravels in this third installment with the dismantling of the Dent Act and the chaos that ensues in Gotham City at the end. Aside from further amplifying the impact the Joker had in the previous film, another strength of this movie is how well-written the entire plot is, from start to finish. Although, to be honest, that ending didn’t quite convince me. I’m not just referring to all the melodrama surrounding our protagonist’s “sacrifice,” but also to how the film wraps up in the end.
Por otro lado, en esta tercera entrega de la saga vemos que el Batman de Christian Bale se enfrenta con “el gran Bane” que llegamos a conocer y termina de la peor manera. Dicho suceso nos lo muestran en esta película como una enorme y muy fuerte caída, donde literalmente todo se ve completamente perdido para nuestro protagonista. Repito, entiendo que este sea el objetivo de la película: mostrarnos la enorme caída del icónico héroe de Gótica y de todo lo que él ha construido luego del trágico final de la entrega anterior. Digamos que en este sentido esta película conecta muy bien con la anterior.
Con esto podemos asumir la gran victoria del Joker en The Dark Knight cuando vemos cómo todo se deconstruye en esta tercera entrega con el desmantelamiento de La Ley Dent y el caos que se desarrolla en Ciudad Gótica al final. Aparte de elevar más el nivel de impacto que tuvo el Joker en la cinta anterior, otra cosa buena que tiene esta película es lo bien escrita que está toda la trama, desde su inicio hasta su final. Aunque dicho final no me terminó de convencer, la verdad. No solo lo digo por todo el melodrama del “sacrificio” que realiza nuestro protagonista, sino cómo cierra la película al final.

The movie has a few other details that I didn’t like either, such as the occasional performance by certain supporting characters. There are also details in the plot—like the fact that an entire organization of dangerous people has been building something massive right beneath Gotham City all these years of “peace and security” under the Dent Act. I don’t know if this is intentional or if they just didn’t think it through, but oh well. I’ll just say that the police’s incompetence in this movie holds up pretty well compared to the previous films.
The same can be said of the protagonist, who honestly makes a fool of himself at the beginning of the movie because of how weak and useless he’s become due to his retirement during the eight years that passed after their defeat at the hands of the Joker. I won’t deny that this really disappointed me, honestly. I’ve said before that Christian Bale’s Batman is my favorite, and watching this movie makes me reconsider my previous opinion, since Christopher Nolan seems to prefer ruining this iconic character with themes like depression over lost love. That said, I’m not disparaging this—I understand it very well.
La película tiene otro detalles más que me disgustaron también como lo son una que otra actuación que realizó ciertos personajes secundarios. También hay detalles en lo que sucede en la película como el hecho de que toda una organización de personas peligrosas hayan estado construyendo algo grande justo debajo de Ciudad Gótica durante todos estos años de “paz y seguridad” por la Ley Dent. No sé si esto es adrede o simplemente no lo pensaron bien, pero bueno. Solo diré que la incompetencia de la policía en esta película se mantiene bastante bien en comparación con las películas anteriores.
Lo mismo se puede decir del protagonista, quien honestamente hace el ridículo al principio de la película debido a lo débil e inútil que se ha vuelto debido a su retiro durante estos 8 años que pasaron luego de la derrota que tuvieron contra el Joker. No voy a negar que me decepcionó bastante esto, de verdad. Ya dije antes que el Batman de Christian Bale es mi favorito y ver esta película me hace reconsiderar mi opinión anterior ya que Christopher Nolan parece que prefiere arruinar a este icónico personaje con temas como la depresión de un amor perdido. Que, ojo, no desprestigio esto ya que lo comprendo muy bien.

I’m not saying this is the only reason, either, since everything that happened at the end of The Dark Knight must have affected him quite a bit. We also have to remember that Nolan made this Batman as “human” as possible, with all his weaknesses, mistakes, and flaws laid bare. For example, the overconfidence and stubbornness he displays at the beginning nearly cost him his life, not to mention immense humiliation and the loss of everything he had. The movie is entertaining for the most part, with some pretty iconic moments and thrilling showdowns, though not quite as much as its predecessor.
I’m really sorry, but watching Batman fight Bane didn’t give me the same thrill as watching Batman face off against the Joker. I know they’re two very different showdowns, especially since one was a battle of wits and morality while the other is a battle of pure brute force. By the way, I have some reservations about Bane’s physical appearance, but that’s mainly because I’m comparing him to other versions of Bane from the Batman animated series. Still, if we set that aside, I’d say this version of the villain is very good in many ways.
Tampoco digo que esto sea lo único, ya que todo lo que sucedió al final de The Dark Knight le debió de afectar bastante. También hay que recordar que Nolan hizo a este Batman lo más “humano” posible con todo y sus debilidades, errores y defectos al descubierto. Por ejemplo, la sobrada confianza y terquedad que demuestra al principio le costó casi la vida, aparte de una humillación enorme y la pérdida de todo lo que tenía. La película es entretenida en gran parte, con momentos bastante icónicos y enfrentamientos que emocionan, aunque no tanto como su antecesora.
Lo siento mucho, pero ver a Batman peleándose con Bane no me generó la misma emoción que ver a Batman enfrentarse al Joker. Sé que son dos enfrentamientos muy diferentes, sobre todo porque uno fue un combate de pensamientos y moral mientras que este otro es un combate de pura fuerza bruta. Por cierto, el personaje de Bane me causa cierta disconformidad con su físico, pero ya eso se debe a un tema de compararlo con otras versiones de Bane de series animadas de Batman. Igual, si dejamos de lado esto, digo que esta versión del villano es muy buena en diversos aspectos.

Aside from how cold and ruthless he is, I think this Bane is very good at leading, planning strategies, and devising methods to cause catastrophes on a disproportionate scale, compared to previous villains. But beyond being a villain who leads an organization of thugs and possesses superhuman strength, he has no other abilities or traits that make him better than any other villain. This isn’t meant to disparage Tom Hardy’s performance as Bane—he does a very good job—but when compared to what Heath Ledger achieved as the Joker, it’s clear who’s the better actor.
I think what I liked most about this movie was the protagonist’s painful and humiliating downfall, along with his magnificent and impressive comeback. If we focus more on the overall plot than on everything the protagonist does, we realize that this story serves as the perfect conclusion for a great hero, following his long retirement and his terrible defeat. As I mentioned before, it’s not how intelligent, skilled, or powerful he is; what makes this Batman special is his admirable ability to get back up after every fall. This latest installment is a perfect example of this great quality that this version of Batman possesses.
Aparte de lo frío e implacable que es, considero que este Bane es muy bueno para liderar, planear estrategias e idear métodos para causar catástrofes a nivel desproporcionadas, en comparación con los villanos anteriores. Pero más allá de ser un villano que lidera una organización de matones y con una fuerza sobrehumana, no posee más habilidades o detalles que lo hagan mejor que cualquier otro villano. No es por desprestigiar el trabajo que hace Tom Hardy como Bane, quien hace un muy buen papel, pero si lo comparamos con lo que logró hacer Heath Ledger con Joker es evidente saber quien es el mejor.
Creo que lo que más me gustó de esta película fue la dolorosa y humillante caída del protagonista junto con el grandioso e impresionante resurgimiento que tuvo. Si nos centramos más en la trama en general que en todo lo que hace el protagonista, nos damos cuenta de que esta historia es como el cierre perfecto de un gran héroe, posterior a su largo retiro y su terrible derrota. Como les mencioné antes, no es lo inteligente, hábil y poderoso que sea; lo que hace especial a este Batman es su admirable capacidad de poder volver a levantarse tras cada caída que tiene. Esta última entrega es un ejemplo perfecto de esta gran cualidad que tiene esta versión de Batman.

Another character who caught my attention is Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, played by Anne Hathaway. I liked how she went from being a villain to an antihero—a jewel thief who ends up becoming Batman’s ally. And for some reason, she was perfect for the role. On the other hand, we also have John Blake, also known as Robin—but before he became The Dark Knight’s sidekick. Here we see him taking on Gordon’s role as a detective who gets deeply involved in the whole Bane case and the destruction of Gotham. But he’s not really a character who stands out that much, to be honest.
Last but not least, let’s now talk about the audiovisual aspects of The Dark Knight Rises. As expected, the film really stands out in this regard thanks to Christopher Nolan’s incredible work. The cinematography, camera work, shots, sets, and even all the locations we see in this film were crafted to look as realistic as possible on screen. And speaking of cameras, the remarkable use of static shots, slow-motion and fast-motion sequences, and transitions is excellent. We already know how committed Nolan is to giving us films where all the visual effects are made as practical as possible.
Otro personaje que me llamó la atención es Selina Kyle, quien también es conocida como Gatúbela, y fue interpretada por Anne Hathaway. Me gustó que pasara de ser una villana a una antihéroe, una ladrona de joyas que termina convirtiéndose en aliada de Batman. Y por algún motivo le quedó muy bien el papel. Por otro lado, también tenemos a John Blake, también conocido como Robin, pero antes de volverse el compañero del caballero oscuro. Aquí lo vemos asumiendo el papel de Gordon como un inspector que se involucra bastante en todo el caso de Bane y la destrucción de Gótica. Pero tampoco es un personaje que llegue a destacarse tanto, la verdad.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene The Dark Knight Rises. Como era de esperarse, la película logra destacarse bastante debido a este aspecto gracias al increíble trabajo de Christopher Nolan. El estilo de fotografía, uso de cámaras, planos, escenarios y hasta todos los espacios que vemos en esta película fueron hechos de tal forma que sean lo más realistas posibles ante las cámaras. Y hablando de cámaras, el notable uso de cámaras fijas, movimientos lentos o acelerados y transiciones son excelentes. Ya sabemos lo comprometido que es Nolan con darnos películas con todos sus efectos visuales hechos lo más prácticos posibles.

Another thing worth noting is both the makeup and the costumes and costume designs, such as Batman’s suit, which hasn’t changed much from his previous movie. The same goes for all his gear or “toys”—unlike the “Bat,” of course. Bane’s distinctive mask is another standout detail, as is Catwoman’s costume. The use of light and shadow, color palettes with dark tones, and spaces with neutral tones create an atmosphere that isn’t quite as dark but is just as intense in this film. The sound effects are still great, as is the soundtrack (though I prefer the soundtrack from the previous film).
Personally, I give it a 9.5/10 rating in terms of the superhero, drama, and action genres.
Otra cosa a destacar también es tanto el maquillaje como las vestimentas y diseños de los trajes, como lo es el traje de Batman que no cambia mucho de su película anterior. Lo mismo sucede con todos sus equipos o “juguetes”, a diferencia del “Murciélago”, claro. La máscara distintiva de Bane es otro detalle muy destacable, al igual que sucede con el traje de Gatúbela. El uso de luces y sombras, paletas de colores con tonos oscuros y espacios con tonos neutros nos dan un ambiente no tan oscuro, pero igual de denso en esta película. Los efectos de sonido siguen siendo geniales, al igual que la banda sonora (aunque prefiero la banda sonora de la película anterior).
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de superhéroes, drama y acción.
