The film begins by showing us two scenes played back-to-back: in one, an elderly man is showing a little girl a simple trick; in the other, a magic show in which a man climbs onto a platform with an unknown electrical machine behind him that shocks him without causing him any harm, and then he disappears, falling into a tank of water where he is trapped. All of this happens while we watch a man walk onto the stage to look at the machine, sneak inside or under the stage, and stumble upon the tank. Immediately afterward, we see the man in a courtroom being charged with murder.

We’re continuing with more films directed by one of this century’s greatest geniuses, Christopher Nolan. This time, let’s talk about a movie that was also a big part of my childhood and early adolescence because I watched it so many times on TV when I was little. It’s funny how well I know this movie, which features a very interesting blend of drama, psychological thriller, and a touch of science fiction. And it’s not just that—the narrative and the way the story unfolds are also a bit complex to follow and understand, since it seems to begin right where the ending appears to be.
But even so, the story is so fascinating that I’ve managed to remember it all these years after the last time I watched it. Ever since then, I’ve recognized how brilliant the plot is, especially the main characters and the entire conflict that unfolds. But it’s only now, after watching it one last time, that I realize just how well-crafted the story is. It’s not just striking that it begins with the ending, but also how it continues to show us different timelines unfolding in sequence throughout the film’s two-hour runtime.
Seguimos con más películas dirigidas por uno de los genios más grandes de este siglo, Christopher Nolan. Esta vez hablemos de una película que también ha formado parte de mi infancia y preadolescencia debido a la gran cantidad de veces que la veía de pequeño en la televisión. Es curioso lo bien que conozco esta película, la cual posee una mezcla muy interesante de drama con thriller psicológico y algo de ciencia ficción. Y no solo es eso, sino que la narrativa y manera de desarrollar la historia es también un poco compleja de seguir y entender ya que parece empezar justamente por lo que parece ser el final.
Pero aún así su historia es tan fascinante que he logrado recordarla después de tantos años que han pasado desde la última vez que la llegué a ver. Desde entonces reconocía lo genial que es la trama, sobre todo los protagonistas y toda la disputa o enfrentamiento que se presenta. Pero justamente ahora que lo acabé de ver por última vez puedo darme cuenta de lo bien elaborada que está la historia. No sólo llama la atención que empiece con el final, sino cómo continúa mostrándonos diferentes líneas del tiempo siendo contadas en cadena a lo largo de las dos horas de duración que tiene esta película.

We see both sides of the main characters: Robert Antier and Alfred Borden. This is because the story itself is about both of them and their rivalry to become the best magician/illusionist of their time. On one hand, we meet Antier, played by Hugh Jackman, who portrays a man well-versed in the art of showmanship—he even always wears a suit—and who seeks fame through his magic tricks. But on the other hand, we have Borden, a more reserved, unassuming, and mysterious figure who has a particular passion for tricks and illusions, despite lacking a flair for showmanship.
Two people who are completely different from one another, yet share the same dream: fame on stage. That shared dream turns into a source of hatred after a tragic incident in which Antier’s wife loses her life in a water tank. From then on, the duo’s relationship turns into a confrontation—a battle of egos fueled by talent, hatred, and revenge—in which both men investigate each other’s tricks, try to uncover each other’s secrets, and even sabotage each other’s final acts. In short, one could say that this is what the film is about: a feud between two 19th-century illusionists.
Vemos los dos lados de los protagonistas: Robert Antier y Alfred Borden. Esto se debe a que, de por sí, la historia trata de ambos personajes y su riña entre sí para convertirse en el mejor mago/ilusionista de su época. Por un lado conocemos a Antier quien es interpretado por Hugh Jackman y hace del papel de un hombre que sabe de teatralidad y hasta viste siempre de traje que busca la fama haciendo sus trucos de magia. Pero por otro lado tenemos a Borden quien es alguien más reservado, sencillo y misterioso que tiene una particular pasión por los trucos y las ilusiones, a pesar de no tener talento para la teatralidad.
Dos personas completamente diferentes entre sí, pero con un mismo sueño: la fama tras el escenario. Dicho sueño que comparten se convierte en una fuente de odio luego de un trágico incidente que sufren, haciendo que la esposa de Antier perdiera la vida en un tanque con agua. Desde entonces, dicha dupla se convierte en una confrontación, una batalla de ego con talento, odio y venganza donde ambos investigan sus trucos, intentan descubrir sus secretos y hasta frustran los actos finales de cada uno. En resumen, podría decirse que de esto se trata esta película, de una riña entre dos ilusionistas del siglo XIX.

Well, at least that’s what I’d say at first, but halfway through the movie, we notice that something even more fascinating is unfolding in the background while they tell us the story I just described above. This subplot—or final event—that gradually unfolds throughout the movie has to do with its fictional and even fantastical side. Just to give you an idea—and without giving too much away—I’ll tell you that we even see the famous Nikola Tesla make an appearance. By the way, the way they introduce and develop this iconic character in the movie is truly fascinating.
But anyway, aside from that, let’s just say that the film plays with certain laws of physics in a way that fits quite well with the whole story they’re telling us about these two illusionists. That touch of science fiction that defies all laws blends perfectly with the illusory and magical world these so-called “magicians” show us on stage with their tricks. But what’s most intriguing about this whole story is the infamous secret behind the reserved Borden’s grand final trick. Seriously, I don’t think there’s ever been a secret so well-hidden and yet so blatantly exposed in a movie.
O bueno, eso diría al menos al principio, pero luego de la mitad de la película notamos que algo más fascinante se va desarrollando intercaladamente mientras nos cuentan la historia que les acabo de describir arriba. Dicha subtrama o evento final que se va desarrollando de a poco a lo largo de la película tiene que ver con ese lado ficticio y hasta fantástico que tiene. Solo para que tengan una idea y sin intención de hacer tantos spoilers, les diré que hasta vemos la aparición del famoso Nikola Tesla. Por cierto, la forma en la que introducen y desarrollan a este icónico personaje en la película es fascinante, la verdad.
Pero bueno, aparte de esto, digamos que la cinta juega con ciertas leyes de la física de una forma que queda bastante bien con toda la historia que nos cuentan de estos dos ilusionistas. Ese toque de ciencia ficción que desafía cualquier ley combina muy bien con el iluso y mágico mundo que estos supuestos “magos” nos muestran en el escenario con sus trucos. Pero lo que más intriga de toda esta historia es el dichoso secreto que hay detrás del gran truco final del reservado Borden. De verdad, no creo que haya existido un secreto tan bien escondido y tan evidentemente expuesto a su vez en una película.

Clearly, Christopher Nolan has really outdone himself by giving us a good number of clues and visual details that reveal the “secret” behind the “Transported Man” trick. What’s more, you can even see that secret revealed right at the beginning in the scene with the bird-in-a-cage trick, where the cage disappears and then reappears outside. Yes, Nolan literally spoils the film’s real ending for us right at that very moment. The most fascinating thing is how this went completely unnoticed until it’s fully revealed at the end as if it were the “big reveal,” when in reality it was the most obvious thing of all.
But I suppose the point of everything that happens after Antier’s attempt to uncover and replicate the secret behind Borden’s trick is a perfect example of what you can achieve with a great deal of obsession and stubbornness in your life. Literally, you can make the impossible possible—if you search earnestly, never give up, and have a vast fortune like the one Antier seems to possess. But the most interesting thing about all this is how it ends—with a tragic ending, yet one that’s quite acceptable considering everything he went through and what he became. It’s true that the path of revenge is very dark and cruel, and this movie demonstrates that perfectly.
Claramente, Christopher Nolan se ha lucido bastante al darnos una buena cantidad de señales y detalles visuales que revelan dicho “secreto” que tiene el truco del “Hombre Transportado”. Es más, hasta se puede ver dicho secreto revelado al principio con la escena del truco del pájaro con la jaula que desaparece y luego aparece fuera. Si, literalmente Nolan nos spoilea el final real de la película justo en ese momento inicial. Lo más fascinante es cómo esto llegó a pasar desapercibido, hasta que se revela por completo al final como si fuera la “gran revelación”, cuando en realidad era lo más obvio.
Pero supongo que el punto de todo lo que ocurre tras el intento de Antier de descubrir y replicar el secreto de dicho truco de Borden es un ejemplo perfecto de lo que se puede llegar a hacer con mucha obsesión y terquedad en tu vida. Literalmente, puedes hacer posible lo imposible, solo si buscas encarecidamente, nunca te rindes y tienes una gran fortuna como la que parece tener Antier. Pero lo más interesante de todo esto es cómo termina, dándonos un final trágico, pero bastante aceptable tomando en cuenta todo lo que llegó a hacer y en lo que se convirtió. Es cierto que el camino de la venganza es muy oscuro y cruel y está película nos lo demuestra perfectamente.

Borden’s secret is reflected only in his life during the two hours of the film. Everything he was, everything he did, and all the mistakes and sacrifices he made—all in order to keep a secret that was so obvious, so that he could remain at the top of everything and be cheered by the public. Once again, this is another case of obsession—only it’s very different, since we’re talking about someone who has made sacrifices and perpetuated a lie in order to defend the only thing he considers valuable in his life. The ending for Borden—who, by the way, is played by Christian Bale—is partly understandable and partly heartbreaking.
In short, this film is open to multiple interpretations: from the typical tale of revenge and obsession to the inevitable dilemma of what you’d be willing to sacrifice to achieve your dreams. You could even say it offers valuable lessons, such as the importance of personal identity, as illustrated by Borden’s case, for example. Overall, the film has a very enjoyable pace, even given how intricately woven its story is. The narrative, by the way, is one of my favorite aspects of the film because of how well it’s crafted—it highlights the characters, delivers fascinating plot twists, and builds the tension to an unforgettable climax.
El caso de Borden con su secreto solo se ve reflejado con su vida durante las dos horas de película. Todo lo que fue, todo lo que hizo y todos los errores y sacrificios que realizó, todo con tal de mantener un secreto tan obvio para así mantenerse en la cima de todo y ser vitoreado por el público. De nuevo, esto es otro caso de obsesión, solo que es muy diferente ya que estamos hablando de alguien que ha sacrificado y mantenido una mentira para así defender lo único que considera valioso en su vida. El final que tiene Borden, quien por cierto es interpretado por Christian Bale, es en parte comprensible y en parte doloroso.
En resumen, esta película puede llegar a tener múltiples interpretaciones: desde la típica historia del camino de la venganza y la obsesión, hasta el inevitable dilema de qué sacrificarías por conseguir tus sueños. Inclusive se puede decir que tiene ciertas lecciones valiosas como la identidad de cada quien con el caso de Borden, por ejemplo. La película, en reglas generales, tiene un ritmo bastante agradable de seguir, incluso con lo entramado que es su historia. La narrativa que tiene, por cierto, es de lo que más me gusta debido a lo bien hecha que está en cuanto a resaltar a sus personajes, darnos giros de trama fascinantes y elevar la emoción con un final inolvidable.

The film also delivers quite well on an audiovisual level, thanks once again to Christopher Nolan’s admirable work. As we saw with Batman Begins, Nolan has an innate talent for making the camera his strongest visual, emotional, and narrative tool. Both the second- and third-person shots, as well as the cinematography styles, framing, static shots, and camera movements, are top-notch. The film’s dark, grayish tone and its cool, rustic color palette fit perfectly with the era on which the story is based. I also really like the makeup and costumes used in the film.
The visual and practical elements—such as the various props used in the special effects, the sets, and so on—are also a major highlight of this film, as they do an excellent job of maintaining that 19th-century atmosphere. The sound effects also stand out considerably, especially since they’re used extensively in the special effects that abound in this film. But what I liked most—aside from the costumes and the film’s old-world English atmosphere—is the soundtrack. This is especially true during plot twists or the climax, where the tension really builds. In short, here’s another movie that’s definitely worth watching.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in the psychological thriller, mystery, drama, and science fiction genres.
La película también cumple bastante bien a nivel audiovisual gracias al admirable trabajo de Christopher Nolan, una vez más. Como ya comprobamos con Batman Begins, Nolan posee un talento innato para hacer de la cámara su recurso visual, emotivo y narrativo más fuerte. Tanto los planos en segunda y tercera persona como también los estilos de fotografía, capturas, cámaras fijas y movimientos son de lo mejor. El tono oscuro, grisáceo y la paleta fría y rústica que tiene la película va muy bien con la época en la que se basa la historia. También me gusta mucho el tema del maquillaje y la vestimenta que se usa.
Los recursos visuales y prácticos como lo son los distintos artefactos que utilizan en los trucos, los espacios y demás son también algo que se destaca bastante en esta película ya que se mantiene muy bien ese ambiente del siglo XIX. Los efectos de sonido también se destacan bastante, sobre todo porque se utilizan mucho en dichos trucos que abundan en esta cinta. Pero lo que más me gustó, aparte de la vestimenta y el ambiente inglés y antiguo que tiene, es la banda sonora. Sobre todo en giros de trama o el final donde la emoción se eleva bastante. En fin, aquí les dejo otra película que vale la pena ver.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de suspenso psicológico, misterio, drama y ciencia ficción.
