Hello, fans of great music. Today, as is customary on my Blog every Tuesday, I’m bringing you a special selection of three songs from another one of my favorite bands from my teenage years. We’re keeping up the rock-and-roll vibe we’ve had so far, but this time we’re going to get even more gothic with a band that defined an entire generation with its sound. I’m bringing this post to you thanks to @ablaze’s weekly contest known as Three Tunes Tuesday from the Music community.
The Rock band I’ll be talking about today is one that, I’m sure, more than a few of you will easily recognize. I’m referring to the famous band Evanescence, originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, and popularized in the early 2000s thanks to their sound. The genre that best defined them at that time was Gothic Metal, though they’re also known for playing Alternative Rock. Between their heavy sound and melancholic lyrics, there’s also the unmistakable voice of the beautiful singer, pianist, and songwriter Amy Lee.
Hola, fanáticos de la buena música. Hoy les traigo, como ya es costumbre en mi Blog todos los martes, una selección especial de tres canciones de otra de mis bandas favoritas de mi adolescencia. Mantenemos el ritmo rocanrolero que hemos estado teniendo hasta ahora, pero esta vez nos volveremos aún más góticos con una banda que marcó toda una generación con su sonido. Esta publicación se las traigo a ustedes gracias al concurso semanal de @ablaze conocido como Three Tunes Tuesday de la comunidad de Música.
La banda de Rock de la cual les hablaré hoy es una que, seguramente, más de uno reconocerá fácilmente. Me refiero a la famosa banda Evanescence, originaría de Little Rock, Arkansas y popularizado a principios de los años 2000 gracias a su sonido. El género que más los representó en aquella época fue el Metal Gótico, aunque también es conocido por tocar Rock Alternativo. Entre su sonido pesado y sus letras melancólicas, también está la inconfundible voz de la hermosa cantante, pianista y compositora Amy Lee.

Let’s start with one of the first Evanescence songs I ever heard, back when I was just starting high school and was obsessed with watching YouTube videos of anime battles—like Dragon Ball Z or Naruto—with their songs playing in the background. I think that’s how I came to know them, in addition to developing a taste for Alternative Rock and Nu Metal. That’s how it happened with “My Immortal”—a song that played in the background of several of those videos and that I ended up liking because of its soft, melancholic, and emotional sound.
"My Immortal" is one of the first three singles from Evanescence’s famous debut album, Fallen (2003). This song had been known for a long time, but after its official release, it achieved a level of popularity unmatched by other well-known singles from the album. The song features a unique blend of Power Ballad, Gothic Rock, and a touch of Pop—though I’m not sure where exactly. Its unmistakable sound, with that piano solo and Amy Lee’s beautiful voice, is what made it the favorite song of many fans and those struggling with depression at the time.
“My Immortal” speaks to the feeling of loss, whether it’s a breakup, a farewell, or the loss of a loved one. What’s fascinating about this song is that its lyrics serve as an emotional and melancholic message for all these situations. While it isn’t based on a real-life story, the feeling conveyed by its lyrics is quite profound. Lines like “when you cried, I’d wipe away all of your tears” or “when you’d scream, I’d fight away all of your fears” make it clear that the relationship she’s describing was one of the strongest and most united that ever existed.
Then we have lines like “now, I’m bound by the life you’ve left behind” and “your face haunts my once pleasant dreams,” which reveal a deeply emotional situation the Evanescence singer is describing. I think we’ve all experienced that lingering presence of a loved one who is no longer by our side. Their memories, their face, their voice, and their smile are now ghostly presences that haunt us wherever we are. That blend of the supernatural with romance and melancholy in this song is what I love most, along with its incredible musical composition.
Empecemos con una de las primeras canciones que llegué a escuchar de Evanescence cuando apenas iba a secundaria y tenía cierta obsesión con ver videoclips de YouTube de batallas de animes como Dragon Ball Z o Naruto con sus canciones de fondo. Creo que es debido a esta manera que llegué a conocerlos, además de desarrollar cierto gusto por el Rock Alternativo y el Nü Metal. En el caso de My Immortal sucedió así, una canción que sonaba de fondo en varios de estos videoclips y que me terminó gustando debido a su sonido suave, melancólico y emotivo.
My Immortal es uno de los tres primeros sencillos del famoso álbum debut de Evanescence titulado Fallen (2003). Esta canción ya era conocida desde hace mucho antes, pero después de su último lanzamiento oficial llegó a tener una popularidad inigualable a otros sencillos conocidos de este álbum. La canción posee una mezcla peculiar de Power Ballad con Rock Gótico y algo de Pop, aunque no sé dónde. Su sonido inconfundible con ese solo de piano y la hermosa voz de Amy Lee es lo que la llevó a ser la canción favorita de muchos fanáticos y depresivos de aquella época.
My Immortal nos habla del sentimiento de una pérdida, ya sea una ruptura, una despedida o la pérdida de un ser querido. Lo fascinante de esta canción es que su letra funciona como un mensaje emotivo y melancólico para todas estas opciones. Si bien no está basada en una historia de la vida real, el sentimiento que nos transmiten sus letras es bastante profundo. Frases como “when you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears” o “when you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears” nos dejan claro que dicha relación de la que nos habla fue de la más fuerte y unida que existieron.
Luego tenemos frases como “now, I'm bound by the life you've left behind” y “your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams” nos revelan una fuerte situación de la que nos habla la cantante de Evanescence. Creo que todos hemos experimentado esa presencia de aquel ser querido que ya no está a nuestro lado. Sus recuerdos, su rostro, su voz y su sonrisa son ahora presencias fantasmales que nos atormentan sea donde sea que estemos. Esa mezcla de sobrenatural con romance y melancolía que tiene esta canción es lo que más me encanta, junto con la increíble composición musical que posee también.

Let’s now talk about another well-known Evanescence single that also became very popular in the 2000s and 2010s for the reasons I mentioned above. "Bring Me To Life" is the first single from the band’s aforementioned debut album, Fallen (2003). It’s one of Evanescence’s most popular and recognizable songs since its release and has even appeared in a few movies that I also watched when I was a teenager. "Bring Me To Life" has a much heavier rhythm than the previous song, with its predominant genres being Metal (Nu Metal and Gothic Metal).
The song speaks of a cry for help, a plea for salvation from the singer, who describes her emotional, mental, and spiritual state as if she were an empty, cold, emotionless being. We notice this sense of numbness right at the beginning with the lines “without a soul, my spirit’s sleeping somewhere cold” and “until you find it there and lead it back home,” which describe exactly what I just mentioned. Then we have the chorus, which is a repetition that goes like this: “Wake me up, wake me up inside, I can’t wake up, wake me up inside, save me, call my name and save me from the dark.”
Have you ever felt the way Amy Lee describes in this song? Without emotions, without expressions, without dreams or hopes. There are those who can really identify with this song because their current situation or life is far from easy. Life’s difficulties make us numb, and “Bring Me To Life” is a wake-up call about this. In the not-too-distant future, all of humanity could end up becoming a society without emotions or deep thoughts, just going with the flow of the masses. This song serves as a reminder to reflect on that.
Hablemos ahora de otro reconocido sencillo de Evanescence que también se hizo muy popular en aquella época de los años 2000 y 2010 debido a lo que les conté arriba. Bring Me To Life es el primer sencillo del ya mencionado álbum debut de la banda, Fallen (2003). Es una de las canciones más populares y reconocidas de Evanescence desde su lanzamiento y ha salido hasta en una que otra película que también llegué a ver cuando era adolescente. Bring Me To Life posee un ritmo mucho más fuerte que la canción anterior, siendo su género predominante el Metal (Nü Metal y Metal Gótico).
La canción nos habla de un llamado de auxilio, una petición de salvación por parte de la cantante que nos describe su situación emocional, mental y espiritual como si fuera un ser vacío, frío y sin emoción. Dicha sensación de insensibilidad la notamos al principio con las frases “without a soul, my spirit's sleeping somewhere cold” y “until you find it there and lead it back home” que nos describen exactamente lo que les acabo de mencionar. Luego tenemos el coro, el cual es una repetición que reza así: “Wake me up, wake me up inside, I can't wake up, wake me up inside, save me, call my name and save me from the dark”.
¿Alguna vez te has sentido igual a como nos lo describe Amy Lee en esta canción? Sin emociones, sin expresiones, sin sueños ni esperanzas. Hay quienes pueden llegar a identificarse muy bien con esta canción debido a que su situación o vida actual no es para nada fácil. Las dificultades de la vida nos vuelven insensibles y Bring Me To Life es un llamado de atención a esto. En un futuro no muy lejano la humanidad entera puede llegar a convertirse en una sociedad sin emociones ni pensamientos profundos, dejándome llevar por las masas nomás. Esta canción sirve para reflexionar al respecto.

And we wrap up this special selection with what, for me, is the best song on this entire short list of Evanescence tracks. “Going Under” is the second single from the band’s aforementioned debut album, Fallen (2003), and it’s another of the most popular and well-known songs in their entire catalog. Its powerful sound blends Gothic Rock with Metal in a sublime way, not to mention Amy Lee’s beautiful and impressive voice. The song, also known for those famous YouTube videos where it plays in the background, was a part of my adolescence and youth.
“Going Under” tells the story of overcoming a toxic relationship—one that the Evanescence singer may have experienced in her past and which served as her inspiration. Its rhythm and sound go very well with the song’s strong and decisive message of breaking away from that relationship—one that makes you “die all over again” every time you face a disappointment or any other harm from the other person. Amid lies, deceit, neglect, abuse, and so much more, we can end up feeling just as Amy Lee describes in this song.
But despite all this, we have to decide to save ourselves, just as the song says, “don’t want your hand this time, I’ll save myself.” We have to “break through” everything that hurts us, holds us back, and makes us feel miserable in life. This is the message left by “Going Under,” a song that really captivated me, not only because of its sound and strong rhythms, but also because of how inspiring and emotional its message is. Sometimes we have to look at ourselves, our situation, and our lives, recognize what’s dragging us down and breaking us inside, and say “enough” once and for all.
Y finalizamos esta selección especial con la que, para mí, es la mejor canción de toda esta pequeña lista de Evanescence. Going Under es el segundo sencillo del ya mencionado álbum debut de la banda titulado Fallen (2003) y es otra de las canciones más populares y sonadas de todo su repertorio musical. Su sonido fuerte mezcla el Rock Gótico con el Metal de una forma sublime, sin mencionar la hermosa e impresionante voz de Amy Lee. La canción, también conocida por esos famoso videoclips de YouTube donde se escuchan de fondo, fue parte de mi adolescencia y juventud.
Going Under nos habla de la superación personal de una mala relación, una que posiblemente haya tenido la cantante de Evanescence en su pasado y de lo cual se haya inspirado. Su ritmo y sonido va muy bien con el mensaje fuerte y decisivo de la canción de romper con dicha relación, una que te hace “morir de nuevo” cada vez que te llevas una decepción o cualquier otro mal de la otra persona. Entre mentiras, engaños, faltas de atención, maltratos y muchas cosas más podemos llegar a sentirnos como Amy Lee nos lo describe en esta canción.
Pero a pesar de todo esto, tenemos que decidir salvarnos nosotros mismos, así como dice la canción “don't want your hand this time, I'll save myself”. Tenemos que “break though” con todo lo que nos hace daño, nos detiene y nos hace sentir miserables en la vida. Este es el mensaje que nos deja Going Under, una canción que me fascinó bastante, no solo por su sonido y ritmos fuertes, sino también por lo inspirador y emotivo que es su mensaje. A veces tenemos que vernos a nosotros mismos, nuestra situación y nuestra vida y reconocer aquello que nos hunde y nos rompe por dentro y decir “basta” de una vez por todas.
