Hello, fans of great music. Today is Tuesday (or still is for me right now), which means it’s time to bring you my special selection of three songs from one of my favorite Rock bands. That’s right, we’re continuing with more Rock ’N’ Roll bands from the 2000s and 2010s—the era when I first discovered this amazing genre while I was still in middle school. Just a reminder that this special section is brought to you thanks to the weekly contest organized by @ablaze in the Music community, called “Three Tunes Tuesday.”
Among the many Rock bands I ignorantly came to know as a teenager thanks to the people I hung out with, only a few names really stuck in my memory because of how influential they were back then. Among them is Papa Roach, a Rock and Metal band that some of you surely know because of how popular they were back in the 2000s. Papa Roach was founded in 1993 in California, United States, and became widely known a decade later for its heavy sound and melancholic lyrics. Below, I’ll share three of my favorite songs by this amazing band.

Hoy es martes (o lo sigue siendo para mí ahora mismo) así que eso significa que es momento de traerles mi selección especial de tres canciones de una de mis bandas de Rock favoritas. Así es, seguimos con más bandas rocanroleras de la época de los 2000 y 2010 donde llegué a conocer este gran género cuando apenas estaba en secundaria. Les recuerdo que esta sección especial es traída a ustedes gracias al concurso semanal que nos prepara @ablaze en la comunidad de Music titulado Three Tunes Tuesday.
Entre tantas bandas de Rock que ignorantemente llegué a conocer de adolescente gracias a la gente con la que me juntaba, solo pocos nombres llegaron a impregnarse en mi memoria debido a lo influyentes que fueron en aquella época. Entre ellos está Papa Roach, una banda de Rock y Metal que seguramente alguno de ustedes conocen debido a lo populares que fueron en aquella época de los 2000. Papa Roach fue fundada en 1993 en California, Estados Unidos y fue popularmente conocida una década después por su sonido fuerte y sus letras melancólicas. A continuación les presento tres de mis canciones favoritas de esta grandiosa banda.

We’re kicking things off with a bang—a classic, an anthem for an entire generation, a generation that emerged from a dark era to grow and realize that not everything in life was lost. “Last Resort” is the first single from the second and most popular album by the California band Papa Roach, titled Infest (2000). The song has become very popular for its sound, which draws from Nu Metal and incorporates some Rap elements that are very characteristic of the band. The lyrics of “Last Resort” speak to the heart-wrenching feelings of someone living with depression and suicidal thoughts.
Despite having a fairly uplifting rhythm and sound, personally, I believe that the contrast between this and the lyrics of “Last Resort” offers a clear message that certain feelings and thoughts are just as intense and confusing as what we hear all around us. The lyrics of this song repeat the phrases “‘cause I’m losing my sight, losing my mind” and “wish somebody would tell me I’m fine” several times, which we can interpret as a clear cry for help from the speaker. This cry stems from everything the song itself describes.
Pain, loneliness, despair, suffocation, numbness, confusion, frustration, disappointment, regret, depression, and finally, the desire to end it all. All of this and more is what the song conveys to us, in a nutshell. Surely more than one person has identified with this song because they’ve likely experienced something similar. That feeling of being completely lost, alone, and with no way out—thinking that “nothing is right” and that it’s impossible to “live like this.” Life sometimes hits us so hard that we even wonder if it’s worth living, and “Last Resort” conveys this very well.
Empezamos de lo más fuerte con un clásico, un himno de toda una generación, una generación que trascendió de una época de oscuridad para crecer y darse cuenta de que no todo estaba perdido en esta vida. Last Resort es el primer sencillo del segundo y más popular álbum de la banda californiana, Papa Roach, titulado Infest (2000). La canción se ha vuelto muy popular por su sonido derivado del Nü Metal y algunos elementos del Rap muy característicos de la banda. La letra de Last Resort habla del sentimiento desgarrador de alguien que vive con depresión y pensamientos suicidas.
A pesar de tener un ritmo y sonido bastante estimulante, en lo personal, considero que el contraste que tiene esto con la letra de Last Resort nos ofrece un mensaje claro de que ciertos sentimientos y pensamientos son tan fuertes y confusos como lo que escuchamos a nuestro alrededor. La letra de esta canción repite varias veces las frases “‘cause I'm losing my sight, losing my mind” y “wish somebody would tell me I'm fine”, lo cual podemos tomar como un claro llamado de auxilio por parte del interlocutor. Este llamado es debido a todo lo que la misma canción nos describe.
Dolor, soledad, desesperación, sofocación, insensibilidad, confusión, frustración, decepción, lamentación, depresión y finalmente deseos de acabar con todo. Todo esto y más es lo que nos habla la canción, en pocas palabras. De seguro a más de uno se habrá identificado con esta canción debido a que probablemente llegó a vivir algo parecido. Esa sensación de estar completamente perdido, solo y sin escapatoria, pensando que “nada está bien” y que es imposible “vivir así”. La vida a veces llega a pegarnos tan fuerte que hasta nos preguntamos si vale la pena vivir y Last Resort transmite esto muy bien.

Let’s talk now about another great Papa Roach song that’s been in my subconscious ever since I discovered them when I was just starting high school. “Scars” is the second single from their fourth studio album, Getting Away With Murder (2004). The song has a rhythm and sound that the band was already making its own back then. I’m talking about Alternative Rock—a sound less heavy than the Nu Metal that had become their trademark in previous years. The lyrics of “Scars” describe a metaphorical process for healing the heart.
The phrase that is constantly repeated from the beginning—“I tear my heart open, and so myself shut”—makes this healing process clear to us. It involves an act of “tearing open” or opening the heart—presumably to feel an emotion—and then “closing” it yourself, as a form of healing and moving forward. “Scars” carries various meanings or messages that apply to anyone in any circumstance where we feel the need to vent and “open up” in order to heal.
But from what I gather from the song as a whole, the speaker may be referring to an act of “healing” following a painful breakup. This can be inferred from lines like “I tried to help you once, against my own advice” and “I saw you going down, but you never realized that you’re drowning in the water,” where we realize that the protagonist knows someone who was going through a difficult time in their life or had many flaws to work on—and that, even with his help, that person simply refused to accept it. Then there’s the line that clearly describes me: “I’m sorry, but I’ve got to move on with my own life.”
Hablemos ahora de otra gran canción de Papa Roach que llevo en mi subconsciente desde que los conocí cuando apenas estaba entrando en secundaria. Scars es el segundo sencillo del cuarto álbum de estudio titulado Getting Away With Murder (2004). La canción posee un ritmo y sonido que ya en aquella época estaba adoptando la banda como propia. Estoy hablando del Rock Alternativo, un sonido menos pesado que el Nü Metal que los identificó muy bien en años anteriores. La letra de Scars nos habla de un procedimiento gráfico para hacer sanar el corazón.
La frase que constantemente se repite desde el principio “I tear my heart open, and so myself shut” nos deja claro dicho procedimiento de curación, el cual implica un acto de “desgarrar” o abrir el corazón, seguramente para así sentir alguna emoción y posteriormente “cerrarlo” tú mismo, como una especie de sanación y superación. Scars posee distintos significados o mensajes que sirven para cualquier persona o circunstancia en la que nos sintamos con necesidades de desahogarnos y “abrirnos” para así luego sanar.
Pero por lo que llego a entender de toda la canción como tal, el interlocutor puede que esté hablando de un acto de “curación” posterior a una fuerte ruptura. Esto se puede extraer de frases como “I tried to help you once, against my own advice”, “I saw you going down, but you never realized that you're drowning in the water” donde nos damos cuenta de que nuestro protagonista conoce a alguien que estaba pasando por algo difícil en su vida o tenía muchos defectos que mejorar y que, aún con su ayuda, esa persona simplemente no quiso aceptarla. Luego está la frase que claramente me describe “I'm sorry, but I gotta move on with my own life”.

To wrap up this special selection, I couldn’t think of a better way to do it than with another song that has easily stuck in my subconscious since I was a teenager and has recently come back stronger than ever. “To Be Loved” is the first single from their fifth studio album, The Paramour Sessions (2006). The song has remained popular ever since thanks to its energetic rhythm, which stems from its blend of Hard Rock and Rap elements. It’s one of my favorites from Papa Roach’s vast repertoire because of all the power and energy it conveys.
The lyrics of “To Be Loved” speak to an internal and external struggle faced by the narrator and his constant search for love in his life. The constant repetition of the phrase “Woah, never give in, woah, never give up, woah, never give in, I just wanna be, wanna be loved” in the chorus makes this very clear. The song can also be seen as a declaration of acceptance and a challenge to keep moving forward despite difficulties, with a positive attitude and a winner’s mindset. But I prefer to see it more as that search for love in life, in this world plagued by chaos and injustice.
I fell in love with the song the moment I first heard it back when I was just a teenager and was discovering this vast musical genre. I won’t deny that my skepticism about the meaning of this and other songs was completely overshadowed by my fascination with their rhythm and excellent sound. Papa Roach is one of those bands that manages to convey all the emotions described in their lyrics through their sound, and that’s something I really like. In short, “To Be Loved” is the message of a man with a dark heart who is searching for love.
Para finalizar esta selección especial no encontré una mejor manera de hacerlo que con otra canción que muy fácilmente se quedó en mi subconsciente desde que era adolescente y que recientemente ha vuelto con más potencia que nunca. To Be Loved es el primer sencillo del quinto álbum de estudio titulado The Paramour Sessions (2006). La canción llegó a popularizarse desde entonces debido a su ritmo enérgico originado de su mezcla de Hard Rock con elementos del Rap. De mis favoritas de todo el enorme repertorio de Papa Roach debido a toda la potencia y energía que transmite.
La letra de To Be Loved nos habla de una lucha interna y a la vez externa que tiene el interlocutor y su constante búsqueda del amor en su vida. La repetición constante de la frase “Woah, never give in, woah, never give up, woah, never give in, I just wanna be, wanna be loved” en su coro nos deja esto bien claro. La canción también se puede considerar como una declaración de aceptación y desafío de seguir adelante a pesar de las dificultades con una actitud positiva y una mentalidad de ganador. Pero prefiero tomarlo más como esa búsqueda del amor en la vida, en este mundo plagado de caos e injusticias.
La canción me llegó a gustar desde el segundo en que lo llegué a escuchar en su momento cuando apenas era adolescente y estaba conociendo este enorme género musical. No voy a negar que mi incredulidad ante el significado de esta y las demás canciones fueron completamente indiferentes ante mi fascinación por el ritmo y el excelente sonido que poseen. Papa Roach es de esas bandas que logran transmitir todas esas emociones que describen en sus letras con su sonido y eso es algo que me gusta bastante. To Be Loved es en resumen el mensaje de un hombre de corazón negro que busca amor.
