Hello, fans of great music. Today is Tuesday, so as is customary on my Hive Blog, I’m bringing you a special selection of three songs by a truly beloved Rock band. They’re well-known for their unique sound and blend of genres, not to mention featuring one of the most beloved female singers of an entire generation. Just like Evanescence, this was another Rock band with a female lead singer that left a huge mark on my teenage years and early adulthood.
The band in question is none other than Paramore, featuring Hayley Williams, Taylor York, Zac Farro, and others. Hailing from Franklin, Tennessee, this band formed in 2004 and has since gained worldwide recognition thanks to its distinctive sound that blends Rock with Punk and Pop. In their early days, they had a heavy sound, even leaning toward Emo, but over the years their sound gradually evolved to become more upbeat, vibrant, and commercial. However, here I’ll talk about just three of their many songs.

Hola, fanáticos de la buena música. Hoy es martes, así que como ya es costumbre en mi Blog de Hive, les traigo una selección especial de tres canciones de una banda de Rock muy entrañable. Una banda muy conocida debido a su sonido y mezcla de géneros tan especial, además de tener a una de las cantantes más queridas de toda una generación. Así como ocurrió con Evanescence, esta también fue otra banda de Rock con una cantante femenina que ha marcado gran parte de mi adolescencia y juventud.
La susodicha banda es nada más ni nada menos que Paramore, compuesta por Hayley Williams, Taylor York, Zac Farro, entre otros. De Franklin, Tennessee, esta banda se formó en 2004 y desde entonces se ha dado a conocer a nivel mundial gracias a su sonido particular que mezcla el Rock con el Punk y el Pop. A sus inicios tenían un sonido fuerte, incluso tirando a ser Emo, pero con el paso de los años su sonido cambió poco a poco hasta ser ahora más movido, colorido y comercial. Sin embargo, aquí les hablaré de solo tres de sus muchas canciones.

Let’s start with one of the most popular and widely listened-to songs in their entire discography—a song that introduced me to Paramore when I was just starting high school and discovering the vast world of Rock music. Taken from their second studio album, Riot! (2007), “Misery Business” is their first single. The song is widely known both for its lyrics and for its Pop-Punk rhythm and sound blended with Alternative Rock. “Misery Business” tells the story of a love triangle in which the singer tries to steal the heart of a man who’s already in a relationship.
Yes, the lyrics of this song aren’t at all what I expected, though I’m not saying they’re as inappropriate as other songs I’ve heard in my life. However, the story the Paramore singer tells us here makes us think about something that could happen to anyone. After meeting and falling in love with someone who’s already in a relationship, it’s hard not to think about being with her, and you’re always scheming or waiting for the perfect moment to steal her away so you can “have her right where you want her now.” “Misery Business” also speaks to that feeling of satisfaction you get when you do something like that.
As you can hear in the chorus: “Whoa, it was never my intention to brag, to steal it all away from you now; but, God, does it feel so good.” That part of the song makes it clear that, no matter what our intentions may be, when we end up doing something like this—even knowing that someone else might get hurt—that final sensation is indescribable. Who knows what Hayley means by that final line, but since I’ve never experienced anything like that, I don’t know how to relate to the song. I’ll just say that I’m really fascinated by both the rhythm and the melody.
Empecemos con una de sus canciones más populares y escuchadas de toda su discografía, una canción con la que llegué a conocer a Paramore cuando apenas iba a secundaria y estaba descubriendo todo este amplio mundo del Rock. Basada en su segundo álbum de estudio titulado Riot! (2007), Misery Business es su primer sencillo. La canción es popularmente conocida tanto por su letra como también por su ritmo y sonido Pop Punk con Rock Alternativo. Misery Business nos habla de un triángulo amoroso donde nuestra cantante busca robarle el corazón a un hombre que ya tiene pareja.
Si, la letra de esta canción no es para nada lo que esperaba, aunque no digo que sea tan indecente como otras canciones que he escuchado en mi vida. Sin embargo, la historia que nos cuenta la cantante de Paramore aquí nos pone a pensar en algo que puede llegar a sucederle a cualquiera. Luego de conocer y enamorarte de alguien que ya tiene pareja, es difícil no pensar en estar con ella y siempre maquinas o esperas el momento perfecto para robársela y así “tenerla donde la quieres ahora”. Misery Business también nos habla de esa sensación de satisfacción que uno siente cuando uno hace algo así.
Como se puede escuchar en el coro: “Whoa, it was never my intention to brag, to steal it all away from you now; but, God, does it feel so good”. Dicha fracción de la canción nos deja claro que, sin importar las intenciones que tengamos, cuando llegamos a hacer algo como esto, aún sabiendo que alguien más puede salir lastimado; es indescriptible dicha sensación final. Quién sabe a qué se referirá Hayley con esa frase final, pero bueno, como yo nunca he experimentado nada así, no sé cómo empatizar con dicha canción. Solo diré que tanto el ritmo como la melodía que posee la misma me fascina bastante.

We continue with another great song by Paramore that has left its mark on an entire generation and features lyrics and a story that are both fascinating and moving. “The Only Exception” is the third single from the band’s third studio album, Brand New Eyes (2009). It’s a song very different from anything the band has released since then, with a sound that evolves from a sort of Rock Ballad into the Pop-Rock sound that has come to define them.
“The Only Exception” tells the story of a woman—likely the singer herself, Hayley Williams—who, as a child, promised to “never sing of love if it does not exist.” But it seems that one day, as an adult I believe, she met someone who became “the only exception” for her, and so she was able to sing about love, just as she conveys in the chorus. The song also tells us about the life she led in solitude, assuming that everything was fine and that she could live without love. All of this stemmed from a fear of falling in love, since “none of it was ever worth the risk.”
We’ve all likely gone through a phase like that in our lives—a time when we believe we don’t need to experience love firsthand to be happy. We believe that simply filling that loneliness with a hobby or some other distraction is more than enough to be happy and live peacefully, without fear of being betrayed or hurt by someone we supposedly love. But in the end, sooner or later, we’ll meet our “only exception” who will change our minds and teach us to “believe again” in love.
Seguimos con otra gran canción de Paramore que ha marcado a toda una generación y que posee una letra e historia bastante fascinante y emotiva a su vez. The Only Exception es el tercer sencillo del tercer álbum de estudio de la banda titulado Brand New Eyes (2009). Es una canción muy diferente a todo lo que se ha llegado a escuchar de esta banda desde entonces, con un sonido que pasa de ser una especie de Balada Rock a convertirse poco a poco en ese sonido Pop Rock que tanto la identifica.
The Only Exception nos cuenta la historia de una mujer -probablemente sea la propia cantante, Hayley Williams- que desde pequeña prometió “never sing of love if it does not exist”. Pero tal parece que, un día, ya de adulta creo yo, conoció a alguien que se convirtió en “la única excepción” para ella y así pudo cantar sobre el amor, tal y como nos lo transmite en su coro. La canción también nos cuenta sobre la vida que tuvo ella en soledad, asumiendo que todo estaba bien y que podría vivir sin amor. Todo esto por el temor de enamorarse ya que “none of it was ever worth the risk”.
Todos podemos haber llegado a vivir una época así en nuestras vidas, una época en la que creemos que no hace falta experimentar el amor en carne propia para así ser felices. Con solo solventar dicha soledad con algún hobby o cualquier otra distracción creemos que es más que suficiente para ser felices y vivir tranquilos, sin temor a ser traicionados o lastimados por alguien a quien, supuestamente, amamos. Pero al final, tarde o temprano llevaremos a conocer a nuestra “única excepción” que nos hará cambiar de parecer y nos enseñará a “creer de nuevo” en el amor.

To wrap things up, let’s talk about another Paramore song that really captivated me—one from right around the time their sound was transitioning from Emo/Punk to something more Pop and Alternative. This is possibly my favorite song from their entire discography, not just because of its catchy, energetic, and powerful sound, but also because of its lyrics and their profound meaning. “Ain’t It Fun” is the fourth single from their fourth studio album, titled Paramore (2013). The song explores the irony of independent life as seen through the eyes of our beautiful lead singer.
Lines like “you’re not the big fish in the pond no more, you are what they’re feeding on” and “so what are you gonna do, when the world doesn’t orbit around you?” make it clear that Hayley Williams is talking about life and its two sides of the coin. The chorus confirms this with the line: “Ain’t it fun living in the real world?” And it’s true that the real world is nothing like what one might have imagined as a child or teenager, when everything revolved around us. Real life can be hard, painful, cruel, and even unfair on many occasions.
The way the song’s lyrics contrast so perfectly with its upbeat rhythm and cheerful sound sends a powerful message of irony. The irony of life—of everything we came to know and learn from a young age, only to end up on the street or, worse, facing reality with nothing but what we have in our hands. But that’s how we grow and mature—not by depending on our mothers, as the song says, but by doing things for ourselves. Only we know how to rebuild our lives, but to do that, we must wake up and see things as they are.
Para finalizar, hablemos ahora de otra canción más de Paramore que me fascinó bastante y que justamente es de aquella época en la que su sonido estaba transicionando de ser algo Emo/Punk a algo más Pop y Alternativo. Esta es posiblemente mi canción favorita de toda su discografía, no solo lo digo por el pegajoso, enérgico y poderoso sonido que posee; sino también por su letra y su valioso significado. Ain't It Fun es el cuarto sencillo del cuarto álbum de estudio titulado Paramore (2013). La canción nos habla sobre la ironía de la vida independiente vista por los ojos de nuestra hermosa cantante.
Frases como “you're not the big fish in the pond no more, you are what they're feeding on” y “so what are you gonna do, when the world don't orbit around you?”, nos dejan claro que Hayley Williams nos habla de la vida y sus ambas caras de la moneda. Su coro nos confirma esto con la siguiente frase: “Ain’t it fun living in the real world?”. Y es cierto que el mundo real no es para nada como lo que uno se hubiera llegado a imaginar cuando era joven o adolescente y todo giraba a nuestro alrededor. La vida real puede llegar a ser dura, dolorosa, cruel y hasta injusta en muchas ocasiones.
La forma en la que la letra de la canción contrasta tan perfectamente con el ritmo tan movido y el sonido tan alegre que posee es un fuerte mensaje de ironía. La ironía de la vida, de todo lo que uno llegó a conocer y aprender desde pequeños para luego terminar en la calle o peor al afrontar la realidad con solo lo que tenemos en nuestras manos. Pero es así como llegamos a crecer y madurar, sin depender de nuestras madres como lo dice la canción, sino haciendo las cosas por nosotros mismos. Solo nosotros sabemos cómo rehacer nuestras vidas, pero para eso debemos despertar y ver las cosas como son.
