The film opens by showing us the dark depths of the ocean as we watch a pair of small submarines exploring what appears to be the wreck of the RMS Titanic. As they send small machines equipped with cameras and grippers to explore the interior of the enormous ship’s cabin, they discover a safe among the wreckage. Excited, the exploration team retrieves the safe from the depths and opens it. However, the joy vanishes from their faces when they realize there is nothing of value inside the safe. There is only an old notebook containing several drawings, which they manage to keep.

And we continue this special series on “Cult Directors” with another cinematic gem from James Cameron’s not-so-extensive filmography. However, despite the limited number of films he has directed throughout his career, that doesn’t take away from the fact that some of them have made history in the world of cinema, as is the case with the romantic and historical epic that is Titanic. I, like my entire generation that grew up watching this film, can attest to just how immensely influential and impactful this movie was in its day. Even today, this nearly three-hour-long film is highly regarded.
A film that perfectly combines historical elements of a tragic event with a romantic and dramatic story in a magnificent way, both theatrically and cinematically. It can be said that, prior to the famous science fiction film saga James Cameron has dedicated himself to in recent decades, Titanic was his last masterpiece for the world of cinema and entertainment. Anyone who has watched television throughout their life, whether from my generation or not, has come to know this cinematic gem. A film that not only became the highest-grossing of all time in its era.
Y continuamos con este gran especial de “Directores de Culto” con otra joya cinematográfica del no tan enorme repertorio cinematográfico de James Cameron. Sin embargo, a pesar de las pocas películas que ha conseguido dirigir en toda su carrera, no quita que algunas de ellas han hecho historia en el mundo cine, como lo es el caso de la epopeya romántica e histórica que es Titanic. Yo, como toda mi generación que creció viendo esta película, puedo garantizar lo enormemente influyente e impactante que llegó a ser esta película en su momento. Aún en la actualidad se valora mucho esta cinta de no menos de tres horas de duración.
Una cinta que combina perfectamente elementos históricos de un hecho trágico con una historia romántica y dramática a su vez de una forma magnífica a nivel teatral y cinematográfico. Se puede decir que, antes de la famosa saga de películas de ciencia ficción que James Cameron ha dedicado en sus últimas décadas, Titanic fue su última obra maestra por y para el mundo del cine y del entretenimiento. Todo aquel que haya visto televisión a lo largo de su vida, sea de mi época o no, ha llegado a conocer esta joya cinematográfica. Una película que no solo se ha convertido en la más taquillera de todas en su época.

Not only that, but it has also won numerous awards for breaking several records and, in a way, revolutionizing the world of cinema forever. I can only affirm the undeniable fact that Titanic is a masterpiece, no matter how you look at it, because it’s not just your typical tragic love story with a big budget and hours of screen time—no. The film tells us more than that, and anyone of a certain age and with some experience watching movies can confirm that this is true. We’re all familiar by now with the “meme” that has transcended a generation thanks to this film: “If the ending doesn’t make you cry, you simply have no feelings.”
Personally, I think what impressed me most about this film—beyond its natural tendency to romanticize one of the most catastrophic events in human history—is the way the director shows us raw human nature in action. Yes, what I’m trying to tell you about this movie is the exact opposite of the romanticized way everyone has talked about Titanic since its release in the ’90s. More than a romantic epic, I see this movie as a tragic and cruel odyssey of humanity facing a practically invincible enemy: harsh reality.
Sino que también se ha llevado múltiples premios al romper varios hitos y revolucionar de alguna forma el mundo del cine para siempre. No puedo más que afirmar el innegable hecho de que Titanic es una obra maestra, veas como la veas, ya que no solo es la típica historia de amor trágica y con bastante presupuesto y horas encima, no. La película nos cuenta más que eso y todo aquel que tenga cierta edad y experiencia viendo películas puede confirmar que es así. Todos incluso conocemos ya el “Meme” que ha trascendido a una generación con esta película de que “si no te hace llorar su final, simplemente no tienes sentimientos”.
En lo personal, opino que lo que más me impresionó de esta película, más allá de su natural manera de romantizar uno de los sucesos más catastróficos de la historia humana; es la forma en la que el director nos muestra la cruda naturaleza humana en acción. Si, lo que intento contarles de esta película es todo lo contrario a lo que románticamente todo el mundo habla de Titanic desde su estreno en los años 90. Más que una epopeya romántica, veo esta película como una odisea trágica y cruel de lo que es la humanidad enfrentándose a un enemigo prácticamente invencible: la cruda realidad.

Not all the stories we see in movie theaters have to have a happy ending, and Titanic is a prime example of this. The film shows us various scenes and settings featuring the different characters aboard the ocean liner before and during its sinking. The film’s narrative is excellent because it doesn’t limit itself to just giving us a few moments here and there and then wrapping things up at the end; instead, it focuses more on showing us every second of the entire sinking, from the collision with the iceberg to the cold, desolate conclusion that brings it all to a close. And this fascinates me greatly, as the film has no qualms about showing everything that happens on the ship’s various decks with its crew.
By this, I mean people giving in to the panic of the moment, the upper-class crew members trying to survive while the lower-class ones are rejected, displaced, and held back as the Titanic sinks. This is just a small example of everything you can see in the film—and I don’t want to give too many spoilers, though I doubt there’s anyone here who hasn’t seen the movie—during the sinking, with all the cold human nature of survival taking precedence over the desire to save people. There are moments in the film where it feels like we’re watching a complete massacre with everything that happens at the end.
No todas las historias que vemos en cines tienen que tener un final feliz y Titanic es un ejemplo de ello. La película nos muestra distintos planos y escenarios de los distintos personajes que se encuentran en este transatlántico antes y durante su hundimiento. La narrativa que tiene la misma película es excelente ya que no se limita a solo darnos uno que otro momento y ya al final, sino que se centra más en mostrarnos cada segundo de todo el hundimiento, desde el incidente con el iceberg hasta el final frío y desolador que lo concluye todo. Y esto me fascina bastante ya que la misma no tiene reparos en mostrar todo lo que sucede en los distintos planos de la nave con su tripulación.
Con esto último me refiero a la gente dejándose llevar por el pánico del momento, los tripulantes de la clase alta buscando sobrevivir mientras los de la clase baja son rechazados, desplazados y retenidos mientras el Titanic se hunde. Esto como un pequeño ejemplo de todo lo que se puede ver en la película -así como para no darles tantos spoilers, aunque dudo que haya alguien aquí que no se haya visto la película- durante el hundimiento con todo y la fría naturaleza humana de supervivencia por sobre el deseo de salvar a la gente. Hay momentos en la película que pareciera que estuviéramos viendo una completa masacre con todo lo que ocurre al final.

Another thing I like about the movie is that it doesn’t reveal all of this until well past the halfway point, after the romantic storyline that’s been unfolding from the very beginning. It’s no surprise that so many people—especially women—loved this film because of just how “special” the love story between Rose and Jack became. And it’s no wonder this happens, since the characters themselves are quite captivating; both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet deliver excellent performances throughout the film. But what I think fascinated this female audience the most is the classic cliché of the wealthy, high-class girl who falls in love with the poor, artistic guy.
I think the love story between the two leads is what made this film a memorable gem for more than one generation. Despite its romantic and dramatic clichés, the film keeps you entertained from start to finish. So I’d say yes, it’s well worth watching all three hours of it—especially if you like stories that are both romantic and tragic. I’m not going to say I didn’t like the romantic side of the movie, nor am I saying the cast did a bad job acting—quite the opposite, in fact.
Otra cosa que me gusta de la película es que todo esto te lo muestra ya para después de la primera mitad de la misma, luego de toda la historia romántica que nos muestran desde el principio. No me extraña que a mucha gente, sobre todo mujeres, les haya encantado esta cinta debido a lo “especial” que llegó a ser dicha historia de amor entre Rose y Jack. Y no es de extrañar que esto suceda ya que los personajes como tal llaman bastante la atención, tanto Leonardo DiCaprio como Kate Winslet hacen una actuación excelente a lo largo de la cinta. Pero lo que creo que más les fascinó a este público femenino es el típico cliché de la chica rica y de clase que se enamora del chico pobre y artista.
Creo que la misma historia de amor entre ambos protagonistas fue lo que hizo de esta película una joya memorable para más de una generación. Con todo y sus clichés románticos y dramáticos, la película te entretiene desde el principio hasta su gran final. Entonces considero que sí, vale mucho la pena ver sus tres horas de duración y más si te gustan las historias románticas y trágicas a la vez. No voy a decir que no me gustó todo ese lado romántico de la película ni tampoco digo que el elenco como tal haya hecho un mal trabajo de actuación, más bien todo lo contrario.

I’ll just say that, with all the jokes and memories and everything I’ve seen and experienced with this movie, I ended up viewing it as a historic classic that everyone should see (which they’ve already done). While the film was a cinematic revolution in its day, given all it achieved on an audiovisual level, it has now become something of a “meme” in my life. Obviously, I’m not going to overlook the incredible work James Cameron did. In fact, his immense and historic popularity rightly precedes him for this very reason. There are a few details in the ending that, personally, I find a bit over-the-top and absurd, but I’ll let that slide.
I’m not going to talk to you about historical, maritime, or scientific accuracy and all that, since I know almost nothing about these topics to give you a comparative analysis—something many people have surely already done online regarding this movie. I’ll just focus on the audiovisual aspects, which fascinated me quite a bit, and even more so now that I’m watching it with more experienced eyes. You already know what I think of the work James Cameron has done in his previous films with visual effects and all that, but I consider Titanic to be the PEAK he managed to achieve in that decade, before what he brought us in the 2000s.
Solo diré que, con tantos chistes y tantos recuerdos y cosas que he visto y vivido con esta película terminé viéndolo como un clásico histórico que todo el mundo debe de ver (cosa que ya han hecho). La película, si bien ha sido una revolución cinematográfica en su época con todo lo que ha logrado hacer a nivel audiovisual, actualmente se ha vuelto como un “Meme” en mi vida. Obviamente, no voy a dejar de lado el increíble trabajo que hizo James Cameron. Es más, su grandiosa e histórica popularidad le precede merecidamente por esto mismo. Hay uno que otro detalle de su final que, personalmente, lo veo un poco exagerado y absurdo, pero igual lo dejo pasar.
No voy a hablarles de la fidelidad a los hechos históricos, marítimos, científicos y todo eso ya que no sé casi nada de estos temas como para darles una cátedra comparativa que seguramente mucha gente ya ha hecho en internet con esta película. Solo me centraré en lo audiovisual, lo cual me fascinó bastante y más ahora que lo veo con ojos más experimentados. Ya saben lo que opino del trabajo que ha realizado James Cameron en sus anteriores películas con los efectos visuales y todo eso, pero considero que Titanic es el PEAK que consiguió hacer en aquella década, antes de lo que logró traernos en los años 2000.

And I’m not just saying this to exaggerate—no, I’m stating it as it is because Cameron managed to give us an excellent story that makes us fall in love, get our hopes up, suffer, and be completely shattered by the end. Not only on a narrative level with his screenplay, set design, unbeatable sequences, and unforgettable lines, but also with his audiovisual elements, which really stand out. Starting with the view of the Titanic itself, it’s more than enough to see the level of quality the director achieved with so many details and a perfect blend of computer-generated special effects and practical effects.
The aerial shots, panoramic views, 360-degree views of the ocean liner, the design of the various interiors, and the distinction between the first-class and third-class sections are particularly noteworthy. The varied color palette, excellent use of lighting, shadows, and visual effects are also outstanding. I really like how they also play with different photography styles and first-, second-, and third-person shots in various sequences of the film. The sound effects are also excellent, especially those from the ship’s exterior and the entire ordeal of the sinking. The soundtrack is also one of the film’s standout features for very obvious reasons. In short, here’s a James Cameron classic that’s well worth watching.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in the romance, drama, and disaster genres.
Y no lo digo por exagerar nomás y ya, no, lo menciono tal cual ya que Cameron consiguió darnos una historia excelente para enamorarnos, ilusionarnos, hacernos sufrir y destrozarnos por completo al final. No solo a nivel narrativo con su guión, construcción de escenarios, secuencias insuperables y líneas inolvidables; sino también con su apartado audiovisual que resalta bastante bien. Empezando por la vista que nos dan del Titanic como tal es más que suficiente para ver el nivel de calidad que el director consiguió daros con tantos detalles y una precisión y mezcla perfecta de efectos especiales hechos por computadora y efectos prácticos también.
Los planos aéreos, vistas panorámicas, vistas en 360 grados del transatlántico, el diseño de los distintos interiores y su distinción entre el lugar de los de primera clase con los de tercera clase es algo digno de destacar. La paleta variada de colores, uso excelente de luces, sombras y efectos visuales también es excelente. Me gusta mucho cómo también juegan con distintos estilos de fotografía y planos en primera, segunda y tercera persona en diferentes secuencias de la película. Los efectos de sonido también son excelentes, sobre todo del exterior de la nave y toda la odisea del hundimiento. La banda sonora es también de lo más destacable de toda la película por muy obvias razones. En fin, aquí les dejo un clásico de James Cameron que vale la pena ver.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance, drama y catástrofes.
