Hello, anime fans. We’re back with another special selection of five anime that stood out among the dozens I’ve watched this past spring season. This time, we’ll be talking about fantasy anime—another genre that’s been very popular and heavily exploited in this industry for decades. Because of this, it’s one of the hardest genres to distinguish between which titles are worth watching and which aren’t. That’s why I’m putting together this TOP list, so those of you who are interested can make a good choice about which anime to watch tonight.
As you know, this TOP list is based solely on my personal opinion of the fantasy anime I’ve watched over the past three months. So if you’re wondering why I didn’t mention a particular anime you like in this post, it’s simply because I haven’t seen it. Everything you’ll read here is my personal opinion, and each anime I’ll discuss is rated on a scale of 1 to 10, starting with the lowest rating and ending with the highest. If you’re a fan of the fantasy genre and are tired of not being able to find a good anime to watch, then stick around until the end.

En esta ocasión hablaremos de los animes de fantasía, otro género muy popular y bastante explotado en esta industria desde hace décadas atrás. Debido a esto es de los tipos de animes que son más difíciles de identificar entre los que valen la pena y los no valen la pena ver. Es debido a esto que hago este TOP para que los que les interese puedan escoger bien qué anime ver esta noche.
Como ya saben, este TOP está hecho únicamente centrado en mi opinión personal de los animes de fantasía que he llegado a ver en estos últimos tres meses. Así que si se preguntan por qué no mencioné algún anime de su preferencia en esta publicación es porque simplemente no lo he visto. Todo lo que leerán será mi opinión personal y cada anime que les hablaré están calificados del 1 al 10, empezando con el de menor calificación y terminando con el de mayor calificación. Si eres fan del género de fantasía y estás cansado de no encontrar un buen anime para ver, entonces quédate hasta el final.

Let’s start with a fantasy and romance anime that initially caught the public’s attention because of its unique premise. A story of love, hate, and war set in a fantasy world that manages to stand out from most other works in this genre. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Noriaki Kotoba, The Barbarian’s Bride was produced by the Jumondou studio. The anime tells the story of Seraina de Lavirant, the strongest captain and knight in her kingdom, who finds herself leading an army fighting against the so-called Eastern Barbarians.
Despite its interesting premise filled with action and incredible battles, this anime is really nothing more than a typical blend of fantasy and romantic comedy—a formula all too common in the anime industry. The only thing that sets this anime apart from the vast majority of titles featuring these narrative elements is both its story and the construction of the fantastical, medieval world we see here. This is largely due to the traditions and/or customs of the so-called “Eastern Barbarians” in their lands and what distinguishes them from the people of the Kingdom of Illodren.
Empecemos con un anime de fantasía y romance que llamó la atención del público al principio debido a su premisa tan particular. Una historia de amor, odio y guerra en un mundo fantástico que logra destacarse de entre la mayoría de otras obras de este género. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Noriaki Kotoba, The Barbarian's Bride fue producida por el estudio Jumondou. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Serafina de Lavirant, la capitana y caballera más fuerte de su reino, quien se encuentra liderando un ejército que lucha contra los llamados Bárbaros del Este.
A pesar de su interesante premisa repleta de acción y batallas increíbles, en realidad este anime no es más que una mezcla típica de fantasía con comedia romántica de lo más común en esta industria del anime. La única diferencia que tiene este anime de la gran mayoría que cumplen con estos elementos narrativos es que tanto su historia como la construcción del mundo fantástico y medieval que vemos aquí. Esto se debe mayormente a las tradiciones y/o costumbres que tienen los llamados “Bárbaros del Este” en sus tierras y lo que los diferencia de la gente del Reino de Illodren.

However, no matter how well-told the story is or how hard they try to “develop” their characters, the anime really has a lot of shortcomings and details that I find quite off-putting. For starters, there’s the issue of Fanservice being used as one of the main visual and narrative devices to define a “barbarian.” I understand why they use it for this purpose at the beginning, but since they mostly use it to sexualize the character of Lavirant, it’s become a very typical tactic in shōnen anime—just a way to grab attention. On top of that, the anime doesn’t have many truly impactful moments.
Most episodes revolve around Lavirant trying to coexist with the barbarians in their eastern lands while learning about their traditions and customs. The fantasy element—the way creatures, monsters, and other living beings are portrayed in this anime—is interesting, as they’re largely governed by “natural law.” One of the main aspects that caught my attention about this anime at first was its audiovisual presentation. Initially, the animation looked great in the early episodes, but over time the quality declined, with simple visual effects and a lack of fluidity.
Personally, I give it a rating of 7.5/10 in terms of the fantasy, action, comedy, and romance genres.
Sin embargo, aún con lo bien contada que esté su historia y lo mucho que intenten “desarrollar” a sus personajes, el anime realmente tiene muchas carencias o detalles que me disgustan bastante. Para empezar, tenemos el tema del Fanservice como uno de los principales recursos visuales y narrativos para definir a un “bárbaro”. Entiendo que al principio lo utilicen para esto, pero ya que lo hagan ya mayoría de las veces para sexualizar al personaje de Lavirant es ya un método muy típico de todo anime shōnen para llamar la atención nomás. Sumado a esto, el anime no tiene muchos momentos impactantes como tal.
La mayoría de episodios están envueltos en Lavirant intentando convivir con los bárbaros en sus tierras del Este mientras conoce sus tradiciones y costumbres. El toque de fantasía, la forma en la que ven a las criaturas, monstruos y demás seres vivos que conocemos en este anime es interesante ya que se rigen mucho por la “ley natural”. Uno de los detalles principales que llamó la atención de este anime al principio es su apartado audiovisual. Inicialmente su animación, la cual se veía muy bien en sus primeros episodios, pero luego con el tiempo se fue disminuyendo la calidad con efectos visuales simples y poca fluidez.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, acción, comedia y romance.

We continue with another lesser-known anime that aired this spring season. A fantasy anime centered on magic that offered us a story that’s both somewhat interesting and absurd, yet with enough potential to pique the interest of more than a few viewers. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Yōsuke Kaneda, The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch was produced by Linden Films. The anime tells the story of Spica Virgo, an aspiring student of magic at one of the most prestigious schools in her world—despite being hopeless at actually performing magic.
Honestly, I started watching this anime without much hope that I’d like it. I say this mainly because of the way the first episode begins. But as I watched more and more, the plot ended up hooking me to such an extent that I simply finished it wanting more. I won’t deny that it has its strange or even unpleasant aspects, such as the very “natural” way the female characters in this anime are sexualized. While they don’t overdo the Fanservice, let’s just say that the protagonist’s personality and certain decisions she makes make me dislike her at times.
Continuamos con otro anime no muy reconocido que se emitió en esta temporada de primavera. Un anime de fantasía dedicado a la magia que llegó a darnos una historia un tanto interesante y a la vez absurda, pero con un potencial que puede llegar a interesar a más de uno. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Yōsuke Kaneda, The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch fue producida por el estudio Linden Films. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Spica Virgo, una aspirante a estudiar magia en una de las escuelas más prestigiosas de su mundo, a pesar de ser inútil para realizar magia.
Honestamente empecé a ver este anime sin tanta ilusión de ver algo que me gustara. Lo comento sobre todo por la manera en la que empieza su primer episodio. Pero luego de ver más y más la trama me terminó de engancharme hasta tal punto de que simplemente la terminé con ganas de más. No niego que tiene sus detalles extraños o hasta desagradables como lo es la forma tan “natural” de sexualizar a los personajes femeninos que conocemos en este anime. Si bien no abusan mucho del Fanservice, digamos que la personalidad de la protagonista y ciertas decisiones que toma me hacen detestarla a veces.

However, I understand why this happens, since the show’s intention is to introduce the protagonist as a girl who’s hopeless at magic and who gradually improves through a lot of hard work and certain somewhat traumatic events that we’ll see in this anime. I like that the series gives some priority to certain supporting characters, while also maintaining the mystery and suspense surrounding certain secrets about the past of the great Claude Sirius—who, by the way, I really like because of how particularly cocky and blunt he is with the protagonist, thereby hiding his true personality.
I won’t say it’s the best fantasy anime, let alone the best magic anime, since there was a series of this style this season that outshone them all. But before I tell you about that one, I also want to mention the audiovisual aspects of this anime. Honestly, I expected more from a studio with decades of experience adapting works and all that, but oh well. The character designs and the varied color palette aren’t bad. Plus, there are certain moments and details that catch your eye, but generally speaking, it feels like we’re watching a low-budget anime due to the poor use of CGI, lack of fluidity, and so on.
Personally, I'd give it an 8 out of 10 in terms of the fantasy and comedy genres.
Sin embargo, entiendo que suceda esto ya que la intención de la obra es presentarnos a su protagonista como una chica inútil para la magia y que poco a poco va mejorando con mucho esfuerzo y cierto eventos un tanto traumáticos que iremos viendo en este anime. Me gusta que la obra le dé cierta prioridad a algunos personajes secundarios, además de mantener el misterio y suspenso de ciertos secretos sobre el pasado del gran Claude Sirius, quien por cierto me cae bien debido a lo particularmente engreído y directo que es con la protagonista, ocultando así su verdadera personalidad.
No diré que es el mejor anime de fantasía y menos de magia ya que en esta temporada hubo una obra de este estilo que le ganó a todas. Pero antes de hablarles de ella, quiero mencionarles también el apartado audiovisual de este anime. En realidad esperaba más de un estudio con décadas de experiencia adaptando obras y así, pero bueno. Los diseños de los personajes y la paleta variada de los colores no están mal. Además hay ciertos momentos y detalles que llaman la atención, pero en reglas generales pareciera que vemos un anime de bajo presupuesto debido al mal uso del CGI, post fluidez y demás.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía y comedia.

Now let’s talk about one of the best anime on this entire list that I highly recommend watching. An anime that came as a surprise this season with a fantastic story brimming with unparalleled drama. A work that redefines the psychological nature of human beings in a world plagued by evil and cruelty. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Nana Akatsuki and illustrated by Suoh, Agents of the Four Seasons was produced by the renowned Wit Studio. The anime tells the tragic story of Hinagiku Kayo, one of the Agents of the Four Seasons—specifically, the Agent of Spring.
We’ve now reached the “TOP” tier, where I 100% recommend every anime I’ll be discussing from here on out. I might be exaggerating a bit with what I’m about to say, but Agents of the Four Seasons is one of the best anime I’ve seen this year. Not only is it an audiovisual marvel from start to finish, but it also has a fantastic story brimming with emotion, drama, romance, betrayal, and revenge to a degree that’s almost absurd. The anime’s overall narrative revolves around the existence of the Agents of the Four Seasons and the “Insurgents” who seek to destroy them.
Hablemos ahora de uno de los mejores animes que sí recomiendo ver de toda esta lista. Un anime que llegó de manera sorpresiva esta temporada con una historia fantástica y repleta de drama sin par. Una obra que redefine la naturaleza psicológica del ser humano ante un mundo plagado de maldad y crueldad. Basada en la serie de novelas ligeras homónimas escrita por Nana Akatsuki e ilustrada por Suoh, Agents of the Four Seasons fue producida por el gran Wit Studio. El anime nos cuenta la trágica historia de Hinagiku Kayo, una de los Agentes de las Cuatro Estaciones, específicamente la Agente de la Primavera.
Ya llegamos al nivel del TOP donde todos los animes que les hablaré de aquí hasta el final los recomiendo al 100%. Tal vez exagere un poco con lo que voy a decir, pero Agents of the Four Seasons es de los mejores animes que he visto en este año. No solo es una maravilla audiovisual de inicio a fin, sino que también tiene una historia fantástica y repleta de emoción, drama, romance, traición y venganza a un nivel que es hasta absurdo. La narrativa general del anime gira en torno a la existencia de los Agentes de las Cuatro Estaciones y los “Insurgentes” que buscan acabarlos.

This premise offers a variety of perspectives on a very different, modern, and magical fantasy world where gods delegate their powers to change the world’s seasons to ordinary human beings with emotions, thoughts, and many imperfections. However, this idealistic and prejudiced society seeks to present these agents as gods, when in reality they are just ordinary human beings like anyone else. This is where the plot unfolds, developing several interconnected storylines through which we get to know the different agents and everything they experience, endure, and feel.
Aside from the narrative and the excellent character development, the anime tends to overemphasize drama in moments where it feels unnecessary. On the other hand, the animation is absolutely mind-blowing, produced by one of today’s largest studios. The character designs, the varied and vibrant color palette, the various visual details, and the excellent camera work and visual shots used are fascinating. The series also features excellent sound effects, as well as a soundtrack that hooks you and touches your heart.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in the fantasy, drama, and romance genres.
Esta premisa ofrece una variedad de visiones sobre un mundo fantástico muy diferente, moderno y mágico donde dioses delegan sus poderes para cambiar de estación al mundo a simples seres humanos con emociones, pensamientos y muchas imperfecciones. Sin embargo, está sociedad idealista y prejuiciosa busca presentarnos a estos agentes como dioses, cuando en realidad son solo seres humanos como cualquiera. Es aquí donde la trama se extiende, desarrollando varias historias que se relacionan entre sí y donde conocemos a los diferentes agentes y todo lo que viven, sufren y sienten.
Aparte de lo narrativo y lo bien que desarrollan a sus personajes, el anime le da cierta importancia a darle más drama a momentos donde uno siente que está de más. Por otro lado, la animación es una completa locura, hecha por uno de los estudios más grandes de la actualidad. El diseño de los personajes, la paleta variada y brillante de colores, los distintos detalles visuales y el excelente enfoque y planos visuales que se utilizan es fascinante. La serie también posee muy buenos efectos de sonido, además de una banda sonora que te engancha y te llega al corazón.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, drama y romance.

Now let’s talk about the return of another great fantasy anime that I’ve loved watching ever since its first season aired about a year ago. An anime that showed a lot of promise with its unique blend of fantasy, action, magic, adventure, drama, and comedy. Based on the manga series of the same name written by Fujino Ōmori and illustrated by Gosho Aoi, Wistoria: Wand and Sword (Season 2) is produced by Actas and Bandai Namco Pictures. The second season picks up right after the end of the first season, with our protagonist, Will Serfort, about to take the final exam that will officially make him a wizard.
If I considered the first season one of the best things I’ve seen in terms of fantasy, action, and adventure, then this second season of Wistoria is the perfect continuation of a fantastic story about a young aspiring wizard who lacks the ability to cast spells in a world where magic is the most valuable and powerful thing that exists. Aside from the great climax and conclusion to the first act that we see in the opening episodes of this second season, the anime expands the story with a completely different arc that elevates us (literally) to a level far above anything we’ve seen before.
Hablemos ahora del regreso de otro grandioso anime de fantasía que tanto me encantó ver desde la emisión de su primera temporada hace ya como un año atrás. Un anime que prometía bastante con su particular mezcla de fantasía con acción, magia, aventura, drama y comedia. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita por Fujino Ōmori e ilustrada por Gosho Aoi, Wistoria: Wand and Sword (Season 2) está producida por Actas y Bandai Namco Pictures. La segunda temporada inicia justo después del final de la primera temporada, con nuestro protagonista, Will Serfort a punto de realizar el último examen que lo convertirá oficialmente en un mago.
Si la primera temporada la considero una de las mejores cosas que he visto en lo que respecta a fantasía, acción y aventura; entonces está segunda temporada de Wistoria es la continuación perfecta de lo que es una historia fantástica de un joven aspirante a ser mago, pero sin capacidad de realizar magia en un mundo donde la magia es lo más valioso y poderoso que existe. Aparte del gran desenlace y cierre que le dan al primer acto que vemos en los primeros episodios de esta segunda temporada, el anime extiende la historia con un arco completamente diferente que nos eleva (literalmente) hacia un nivel muy por encima de todo lo que se ha visto.

The way this story is told is truly excellent. While it’s by no means new when compared to the vast majority of fantasy stories featuring protagonists who become heroes from scratch, it is special because of the relationships and character development our protagonist experiences. We’re mainly talking about Will’s relationship with Rosti, which clearly has the potential to develop into something romantic. However, that very relationship is the source of all the strength and motivation our protagonist has to keep moving forward and face any enemy or obstacle.
Aside from its story, what I also like most about this anime is the unique way it highlights and develops its main and supporting characters. The anime also boasts a very high level of audiovisual quality, one that makes it worthy of this spot. Of course, this is particularly noticeable in the action scenes, which make up the bulk of this entire second season. But compared to the previous season, the quality of detail, fluidity, and animation and movement styles is far superior—especially in that grand finale. Furthermore, the anime’s sound effects and soundtrack are equally impressive.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in the fantasy, adventure, action, and comedy genres.
La forma tan excelente de contarnos está historia, la cual no es para nada nueva si la comparamos con la gran mayoría de historias de fantasía de protagonistas que se convierten en héroes desde cero; sí es especial ya que las relaciones y el desarrollo que tiene nuestro protagonista lo hacen especial. Principalmente estamos hablando de la relación que tiene Will con Rosti, lo cual claramente puede llegar a convertirse en algo romántico. Sin embargo, dicha relación que tienen es la fuente de toda la fuerza y motivación que posee nuestro protagonista para seguir adelante y enfrentarse a cualquier enemigo u obstáculo.
Aparte de su historia, lo que más me gusta también de este animes es la forma tan especial de destacar y desarrollar a sus personajes principales y secundarios. El anime también posee un nivel bastante alto de calidad audiovisual, uno que lo hace merecedor de este puesto. Por supuesto, esto se puede notar bastante en escenas de acción que son las que, en su mayoría, abundan en toda esta segunda temporada. Pero si la comparamos con la temporada anterior, la calidad de detalles, fluidez y estilos de animación y movimiento es mucho más superior, sobre todo con ese gran final que tiene. Además, los efectos de sonido y la banda sonora del anime tampoco se quedan atrás.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, aventura, acción y comedia.

To wrap up this great TOP list, I couldn’t think of a better way than to tell you about the surprise of the season, of the year, and of all time. An anime that easily became one of my all-time favorite fantasy and adventure series. Without exaggerating, we’re looking at a potential modern audiovisual masterpiece. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Kamome Shirahama, Witch Hat Atelier was produced by Bug Films. The anime tells the story of Coco, a young girl and the daughter of a seamstress who suddenly discovers the secret of magic in a world where it’s strictly forbidden.
What I said above about this anime is no exaggeration, and I believe it thoroughly deserves this final spot because of just how fantastic it is in so many ways. Aside from being a fantasy work featuring magic—a subgenre that has been exceptionally well-developed with some truly priceless gems—this anime also boasts one of the most wonderful, tragic, fascinating, and best-told stories out there. The story presented here revolves around a girl who discovers the secret of magic and, while trying to replicate it, makes a mistake that causes her mother to be completely frozen.
Para concluir con este gran TOP no encontré una mejor manera que hablándoles de la sorpresa de la temporada, del año, de la historia. Un anime que fácilmente logró convertirse en una de mis obras favoritas de fantasía y aventura de todas. Sin exagerar, estamos ante una potencial obra maestra audiovisual y moderna. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Kamome Shirahama, Witch Hat Atelier fue producida por el estudio Bug Films. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Coco, una pequeña chica e hija de una costurera que de repente descubre el secreto de la magia en un mundo donde eso está seriamente restringido.
No es exageración lo que les dije arriba sobre este anime y creo que merece en sobremanera este puesto final debido a lo fantástica que es en múltiples sentidos. Aparte de tratarse de una obra de fantasía con magia, la cual es una variedad del género que muy bien se ha desarrollado con buenas joyas invaluables; este anime también posee una de las historias más maravillosas, trágicas, fascinantes y mejor contadas que existen. La narrativa que nos presentan aquí gira en torno a una chica que descubre el secreto de la magia y al intentar replicarla comente un error que hace que su madre sea congelada por completo.

From the very beginning, the anime shows us not only how fascinating and colorful magic is in this fantastical, medieval world, but also reveals the dark side of that magical world through “forbidden spells.” The way Coco, our protagonist, describes all of this is fascinating, as we see her experience one traumatic event after another, each of which only serves to escalate the level of risk and danger involved in using magic irresponsibly, selfishly, or without control. We also meet various characters with different perspectives and stories to tell. But instead of learning each of their stories, we get to know them in these moments of tension.
The anime also features a well-detailed system that explains how magic works in this world, which is fascinating because it’s something that can be replicated in real life, in a way. The logic behind how they use this magic and keep it hidden from the world is quite understandable—especially once we meet the antagonists of this dark story. The animation—as if the story, narrative, and characters weren’t enough—is the most remarkable aspect of it all. The level of quality, detail, fluidity, character design, color palette, shadows, lighting, effects, and more is impressive. This is the anime everyone must watch, without exception.
Personally, I give it a well-deserved 10/10 rating in the fantasy, drama, adventure, and comedy genres.
El anime desde el principio nos muestra, no solo lo fascinante y colorido que es la magia en este mundo fantástico y medieval, sino que también vemos el lado oscuro de dicho mundo mágico con los “hechizos prohibidos”. La forma en la que Coco, nuestra protagonista, describe todo esto es fascinante ya que vemos cómo pasa a vivir un evento traumático tras otro que lo que hace solamente es escalar el nivel de riesgo y peligro que hay en utilizar la magia de manera irresponsable, egoísta o sin control. También conocemos a distintos personajes con distintos puntos de vista e historias por contarnos. Pero en vez de conocer cada una de sus historias, conocemos a cada uno en dichos momentos de tensión.
El anime también posee un sistema bien detallado que nos explica cómo realizar magia en este mundo, lo cual es fascinante ya se que es algo que se puede replicar en la vida real, de alguna manera. La lógica y la manera en la que utilizan dicha magia y la restringen ante el mundo es bastante comprensible y más cuando conocemos a los antagonistas de esta oscura historia. La animación, por si no fuera suficiente con su historia, narrativa y personajes, es de lo más destacable de todo. El nivel de calidad, detalles, fluidez, diseño de personajes, paleta de colores, sombras, luces, efectos y demás es impresionante. Este es el anime que todos tienen que ver, sin excepción alguna.
Personalmente, le doy una muy merecida calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, drama, aventura y comedia.
