Hello, anime fans. Today I’m bringing you another special selection of five anime I watched last year. This time, the anime I’m featuring are from the science fiction genre—a genre that’s very well-known in the industry, though it’s been somewhat neglected in recent decades. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any good works in this genre worth watching. That’s certainly true of the series I’ll be discussing below, which I’ve selected from a group of anime I’ve watched as they aired.
All of these anime have their own unique aspects and reasons to watch them, especially because they feature stories that can move and captivate many viewers. Some of the anime I’ll discuss also blend drama with mystery and even a touch of gore and suspense, making them even more entertaining. I’ve chosen what I consider to be the best in this science fiction genre. That said, I have left out other entertaining anime, such as Touring After the Apocalypse and Me and My Alien MuuMuu.
As you probably know by now, everything you’ll read below is solely my personal opinion. I’d also like to remind you that I’ve already reviewed all the anime I’ll be mentioning, so you’ll see their titles linked to their respective reviews. The ratings I’ll give to each of the five anime will be based—primarily—on how faithful they are to the science fiction genre they represent, among many other factors, of course. So if you like science fiction and are looking for a good anime to watch, then stick around until the end.

Esta vez, los animes que les traigo son del género de ciencia ficción, un género muy conocido en la industria, aunque muy descuidado durante estas últimas décadas. Pero esto no quiere decir que no haya buenas obras de este género que valgan la pena ver. Ese es el caso de las series que les hablaré a continuación, las cuales las he escogido de un grupo de animes que he visto en emisión.
Todos estos animes tienen sus detalles y razones para llegar a verlos, especialmente porque tienen historias que pueden impactar y fascinar a más de uno. Algunos de estos animes que les hablaré también poseen una mezcla de drama con misterio y hasta algo de gore y suspenso que las hacen aún más entretenidas. He escogido los que, considero yo, son los mejores de este género de ciencia ficción. Pero sí es cierto que he dejado de lado otros animes entretenidos como lo son Touring After the Apocalypse y Me and my Alien MuuMuu.
Como ya deben de saber a estas alturas, todo lo que leerán a continuación será únicamente mi opinión personal. También les recuerdo que todos los animes que les mencionaré ya les he hecho una reseña en su momento, así que por eso verán sus nombres enlazados con sus respectivas reseñas. Las calificaciones que les haré a cada uno de los cinco animes serán considerando -principalmente- su fidelidad con el género de ciencia ficción al cual representan, entre muchas otras cosas, claro. Let’s start with an anime that actually surprised me a bit at the time because of its unique story and narrative. It’s a series that turns out to be more than it seems at first glance. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Jun Mayuzuki, Kowloon Generic Romance is an animated adaptation produced by Arvo Animation. The anime tells the story of Reiko Kujirai, a young real estate agent living in the Walled City of Kowloon who falls in love with her coworker, Hajime Kudo.
What at first may seem like a simple coming-of-age romance set in a particularly strange place ultimately becomes the story of a man who lost everything and lived in a time long past. It’s a bit difficult for me to explain just how many emotions this anime stirred in me when I first watched it. The numerous plot twists and the mysteries surrounding Reiko, Hajime, and the city are what really grab your attention at the start.
Empecemos con un anime que me llegó a sorprender un poco en su momento debido a su historia y narrativa tan particulares. Una serie que llega a ser más que lo que aparenta a simple vista. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Jun Mayuzuki, Kowloon Generic Romance es una adaptación animada producida por el estudio Arvo Animation. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Reiko Kujirai, una joven empleada de una agente inmobiliaria que vive en la Ciudad Amurallada de Kowloon y que se enamora de su compañero de trabajo, Hajime Kudo.
Lo que al principio puede parecerse a una simple historia de amor juvenil/adulto en un lugar particularmente extraño termina convirtiéndose al final en la historia de un hombre que lo perdió todo y que vivió en una época que ya pasó hace mucho tiempo. Es un poco complicado para mí llegar a explicarles la cantidad de cosas que me hizo sentir este anime cuando lo llegué a ver en su momento. La cantidad de giros de trama, los misterios alrededor de Reiko, Hajime y la ciudad son cosas que llaman mucho la atención al principio.

But then all of this turns into complete madness straight out of an unbalanced, broken, and melancholic mind. Let’s just say that what I liked most about all this is the technology featured in this near future—technology that isn’t fully explained throughout the anime because, in part, they simply don’t fully understand it themselves, or at least that’s what I gathered. But even so, the way they use that technology and how they transform a space into an entire, seemingly habitable city is mind-blowing.
The anime features elements of suspense, psychological trauma, and drama, in addition to the romance and comedy it also offers. I like the way the main characters are developed, though I can’t honestly say the same about the other characters. The animation isn’t the best, and it seems to shine mostly in the character designs—especially when it comes to Fanservice. But when it comes to delivering fluid scenes or well-crafted shots, it leaves a lot to be desired. Still, in terms of the audiovisual aspects, it doesn’t completely disappoint.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the science fiction, romance, drama, and mystery genres.
Pero luego todo esto se convierte en una completa locura sacada de una mente desequilibrada, rota y melancólica. Digamos que lo que más me gustó de todo esto es el tema de la tecnología que se maneja en este futuro cercano, una tecnología que no nos explican bien a lo largo del anime ya que, en parte, simplemente no lo terminan de entender o al menos es lo que llegué a comprender yo. Pero aún así la forma en la que utilizan dicha tecnología y cómo convierten un espacio en toda una ciudad aparentemente habitable te vuela la cabeza.
El anime maneja ciertos niveles de suspenso, traumas psicológicos y drama; además del romance y la comedia que también posee. Me gusta la forma en la que desarrollan a sus personajes principales, aunque no puedo decir lo mismo de los demás personajes, sinceramente. La animación no es la mejor de todas y parece destacarse mayormente en el diseño de los personajes, sobre todo en el Fanservice. Pero al momento de darnos escenas fluidas o planos bien elaborados, deja mucho que desear. Aún así, en cuanto a lo audiovisual no decepciona por completo.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción, el romance, el drama y el misterio.

Let’s now talk about another science fiction anime that actually lives up to its genre this time—a very interesting futuristic detective story. It’s a series full of mysteries, drama, and many technological themes that challenge human morality and integrity. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Mareho Kikuishi and illustrated by Tsubata Nozaki, Your Forma is an animated adaptation produced by Geno Studio. The anime tells the story of Echika Hieda, an electronic investigator who seeks information by “diving” into the minds of her victims.
A futuristic world, technology that connects you to everything and also records everything—including your emotions and thoughts—and a unique pair of investigators who take on complex cases. It’s like watching the typical story of investigators as protagonists and all that, but with the fictional twist of being set in a world where robots can now replicate every emotion as if they were real human beings. With all this, you’d expect to see something full of surprises, impressive plot twists, and an unbeatable level of suspense.
Hablemos ahora de otro anime de ciencia ficción que sí es lo que aparenta esta vez y estamos hablando de una obra detectivesca y futurista muy interesante. Una serie repleta de misterios, drama y muchos temas tecnológicos que desafían la moral e integridad humana. Basada en la serie de novelas ligeras homónimas escritas por Mareho Kikuishi e ilustradas por Tsubata Nozaki, Your Forma es una adaptación animada producida por Geno Studio. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Echika Hieda, una investigadora electrónica que busca información “sumergiéndose” en las mentes de sus víctimas.
Un mundo futurista, una tecnología que te conecta con todo y registra también todo, incluido tus emociones y pensamientos y una pareja particular de investigadores que toman casos complejos de resolver. Es como ver la típica historia de investigadores protagonistas y todo eso, pero con el detalle ficticio de ser en un mundo donde los robots ahora pueden replicar toda emoción como si de verdad fueran seres humanos reales. Con todo esto uno esperaría ver algo repleto de sorpresas, giros de trama impresionantes y un nivel de suspenso insuperable.

But while the anime starts off this way, it’s also worth mentioning that it takes its time to tell us all about Your Forma technology, the androids, and the various cases handled by Echika Hieda and her unique partner. The anime does have its exciting moments, and there’s even a final arc that brings the story to a fascinating conclusion. But there are also slow moments, with little excitement and nothing particularly relevant to tell us. I’m not saying this makes it a bad anime. It’s just not for everyone, especially given the mystery, gore, and complex themes explored in some of its episodes.
The anime also stands out in part for its consistently high audiovisual quality. The cold tone and the futuristic—even cyberpunk—elements of this world really shine. The character designs also stand out in their own way, though what stands out even more is the animation style and the visual details in the various angles, settings, and shots we see. The sound effects aren’t bad either, nor is the anime’s soundtrack. While the fluidity and movement styles might leave you wanting more, everything else complements them well.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in the science fiction, drama, mystery, and detective genres.
Pero si bien el anime empieza así, también hay que mencionar que se toma su tiempo para contarnos todo acerca de la tecnología Your Forma, los androides y los distintos casos que toman Echika Hieda y su particular pareja. El anime sí tiene su momentos emocionantes y hasta hay un arco final que logra cerrar de una forma fascinante esta historia. Pero también hay momentos lentos, con poca emoción y nada relevante por contarnos. No digo con esto que sea un mal anime. Solo que no es para todo el mundo, sobre todo por el tema del misterio, el gore y los temas complejos que tratan algunos de sus episodios.
El anime también destaca en parte por tener un nivel de calidad audiovisual que se mantiene muy bien. Resalta mucho el tono frío y los elementos futuristas y hasta cyberpunk que tiene este mundo. También están los diseños de los personajes que destacan a su manera, aunque más lo hace es el estilo de animación y los detalles visuales en los distintos ángulos, escenarios y planos que vemos. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, al igual que sucede con la banda sonora de este anime. Si bien la fluidez y estilos de movimiento que tiene te dejan inconforme, todo lo demás lo complementa bien.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción, drama, misterio y detectives.

We’re raising the bar with one of the best anime I saw last year—an anime that made just as big an impact as it did a splash in popularity at the time. It’s a story packed with drama, comedy, and plenty of tragedy that teaches us some pretty important lessons. Based on the web manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Taizan 5, Takopi’s Original Sin is an animated adaptation produced by Enishiya studio. The anime tells the tragic story of a small, pink, octopus-shaped alien named Takopi who travels to Earth to make people happy.
I still remember the first episode perfectly—it gave us one of the most mind-blowing, absurd, colorful, and heart-wrenching introductions to this story. It’s one of those anime that manages to entertain us and break our hearts at the same time thanks to its unique blend of comedy and drama. But it’s not just any drama—it’s the kind of drama that makes you wonder if there really are people that cruel in real life, only to realize that, unfortunately, there are. It’s one of those anime that makes you grow attached to, love, and hate its characters because of everything that happens.
Subimos el nivel con uno de los mejores animes que he visto el año pasado, un anime que tuvo tanto un impacto como una popularidad igual de fuertes en su momento. Una historia repleta de drama, comedia y muchas tragedias que nos enseñan lecciones bastante importantes. Basada en la serie de manga web homónima escrita e ilustrada por Taizan 5, Takopi's Original Sin es una adaptación animada producida por el estudio Enishiya. El anime nos cuenta la trágica historia de un pequeño extraterrestre rosado con forma de pulpo llamado Takopi que viaja a la tierra a hacer a la gente feliz.
Aún recuerdo perfectamente su primer episodio, el cual nos dió una de las introducciones más alucinantes, absurdas, coloridas y desgarradoras a la vez de esta historia. Es de esos animes que logran entretenernos y rompernos el corazón al mismo tiempo debido a su particular mezcla de comedia y drama. Pero no es un drama cualquiera, sino que es de ese drama que te hace preguntarte si de verdad existe gente tan cruel en la vida real para luego darte cuenta de que, lamentablemente, es así. Es de esos animes que te hacen encariñarse, amar y odiar a sus personajes por todo lo que sucede.

Something I have to say to those who haven't seen it yet is that this isn't an anime for everyone. The themes it deals with are quite intense, starting with suicide, domestic abuse, and murder. The anime is well known for its intense, completely graphic scenes that are completely uncensored. Aside from that, the ironic way the story centers on the small, innocent alien who experiences all of this on his journey to Earth gives us perspective on various viewpoints within the story. Even the characters’ dialogue, speech patterns, and expressions stand out because of this.
I like how the series itself uses audiovisual elements to show us the different perspectives of each character we meet in this anime. And not only that, but we also see the humor and funny moments as a way to relax, right before the intense scenes unfold. Another highlight is the incredible fluidity and level of detail in the animation. Starting with the unique character designs, the art style, and the stunning shots—I find them all quite fascinating. The same goes for the sound effects and the soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in terms of the science fiction, drama, and comedy genres.
Algo que les tengo que decir a los que aún no la han visto es que no es un anime para todo el mundo. Los temas que trata son bastante fuertes, empezando por el suicidio, el abuso doméstico y el asesinato. El anime es muy conocido debido a sus fuertes escenas completamente gráficas y sin ningún tipo de censura. Aparte de eso, la manera tan irónica en la que la historia está centrada en el pequeño e inocente extraterrestre que experimenta todo esto en su viaje a la tierra nos pone en perspectiva varios puntos de vista de dicha historia. Incluso los diálogos, formas de hablar y expresiones que tienen los personajes destacan debido a esto.
Me gusta cómo la misma obra logra utilizar los elementos audiovisuales para mostrarnos los distintos puntos de vista de cada personaje que conocemos en este anime. Y no solo eso, sino que también vemos el humor y los momentos graciosos como una forma de relajarnos, justo antes de mostrarnos los momentos fuertes. Otro punto a destacar es la increíble fluidez y nivel de detalles que tiene la animación. Empezando por el diseño particular de los personajes, el estilo de dibujo y los planos tan impresionantes que tiene me fascinan bastante. Lo mismo sucede con los efectos de sonido y la banda sonora.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción, el drama y la comedia.

Next up is another anime that I was really fascinated by when I watched it last year. It’s an anime that didn’t become as popular as the previous one, despite having a pretty fascinating story. It’s one of those animes that ends up being more than you expect at first. Based on a video game—a visual novel developed by Petit Depotto—Gnosia is an animated adaptation produced by the studio Domerica. The anime tells the story of Yuri, a boy who suddenly wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of his past.
The anime, which became known for having a plot similar to the famous game Among Us, turned out to be one of my favorite sci-fi animes from last year. So much so that I even ranked it here, even above the previous anime, since it has a story packed with so many elements typical of science fiction that it was hard to overlook in favor of an anime focused purely on drama and heavy themes for a general audience. With Gnosia, at least there’s no risk that watching it while dealing with heartbreak will give you a heart attack by the end of the first episode.
Seguimos con otro anime que me fascinó bastante ver en su momento el año pasado. Un anime que no llegó a popularizarse tanto como el anterior, a pesar de tener una historia bastante fascinante. Es de esos animes que llegan a ser más de lo que esperas ver al principio. Basada en un videojuego, una novela visual desarrollada por Petit Depotto, Gnosia es una adaptación animada producida por el estudio Domerica. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Yuri, un chico que despierta de repente en una nave espacial sin ningún recuerdo de su pasado.
El anime que llegó a ser reconocido por tener una trama parecida al famoso juego Among Us se convirtió en uno de mis animes favoritos de ciencia ficción del año pasado. Es tanto así que incluso lo coloqué en este puesto, aún por encima del anterior anime ya que posee una historia repleta de tantos elementos tan típicos de la ciencia ficción que fue difícil infravalorar por preferir a un anime de puro drama y temas fuertes para todo el público. Con Gnosia al menos no está ese riesgo de que al verla con tus problemas de corazón te dé algo al final de su primer episodio.

Todo lo contrario, lo recomiendo encarecidamente a cualquiera que sea fan o que, aunque sea un poco, le guste la ciencia ficción, los viajes espaciales, los bucles temporales, los mundos paralelos e incluso los seres cósmicos y multidimensionales. Incluso si nada de eso te llama la atención, seguro que lo hará su trama repleta de misterios, drama e incluso algo de suspense. El anime también desarrolla muy bien a todos los personajes, que son todos los tripulantes de esta gran nave espacial. Cada episodio es más fascinante, intrigante y entretenido que el anterior, de eso puedes estar seguro.
Y por si fuera poco, también cuenta con un final grandioso, uno que te deja completamente satisfecho y agradecido de haber visto esta magnífica obra. La animación tampoco se queda atrás, ya que nos ofrece un excelente trabajo audiovisual de gran calidad. Además del magnífico y colorido diseño de los personajes, también vemos una mezcla perfecta de animaci ón tradicional y estética con entornos y objetos generados por ordenador. El uso de luces, sombras, efectos visuales, transiciones y movimientos es también de lo más destacable. La banda sonora, por supuesto, no se queda atrás.
Personalmente, le doy una puntuación de 9,8/10 en lo que respecta a los géneros de ciencia ficción, drama, comedia y misterio.
Todo lo contrario, recomiendo verlo encarecidamente, todo aquel que sea fan o siquiera le guste un poco la ciencia ficción, los viajes espaciales, los bucles temporales, los mundos paralelos e incluso los seres cósmicos y multidimensionales. Incluso si nada de eso te llama la atención, de seguro lo hará su trama repleta de misterios, drama y hasta algo de suspenso. El anime también nos desarrolla muy bien a todos los personajes, los cuales son todos los integrantes de esta gran nave espacial. Cada episodio es más fascinante, interrogante y entretenido que el anterior, eso tenlo por seguro.
Y por si no fuera suficiente, también cuenta con un grandioso final, uno que te deja completamente satisfecho y agradecido de haber visto esta grandiosa obra. La animación tampoco se queda atrás al darnos un excelente trabajo audiovisual de gran calidad. Aparte del excelente y colorido diseño de los personajes, también vemos una mezcla perfecta de animación tradicional y estética con entornos y objetos hechos por computadora. El uso de luces, sombras, efectos visuales, transiciones y movimientos son también de lo más destacable. La banda sonora, por supuesto, no se queda atrás.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.8/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción, el drama, la comedia y el misterio.

We wrap up this TOP list with what is—in my opinion—the best science fiction anime I saw last year. It’s an anime that captivated me from start to finish because of its beautiful story and everything it represents. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s one of the best audiovisual experiences out there, and I highly recommend everyone watch it. Produced by CyberAgent, Apocalypse Hotel is an original animated series created by the studio CygamesPictures. The anime tells the epic story of the Gingarou Hotel in Ginza, a hotel that has managed to remain open even in a post-apocalyptic world completely devoid of humans.
At the time, I was thoroughly captivated by each episode, especially by the natural way it blends comedy with adventure and its various science fiction elements. But I think the most fascinating thing was that it’s set in a post-apocalyptic world, with characters who are emotionless robots and aliens, and that the very absence of humans throughout the anime conveys a sense of nostalgia that’s easy to get caught up in. The anime also has many funny moments—all kinds of random and quite entertaining scenes that don’t follow a fixed timeline.
Concluimos este TOP con el que es -para mí- el mejor anime de ciencia ficción que he visto el año pasado. Un anime que me fascinó de principio a fin debido a su hermosa historia y todo lo que esta representa. No exagero cuando les digo que es una de las mejores experiencias audiovisuales que recomiendo a todo el mundo ver. Producida por CyberAgent, Apocalypse Hotel es una serie animada original hecha por el estudio CygamesPictures. El anime nos cuenta la grandiosa historia del Hotel Gingarou, de Ginza, un hotel que ha logrado mantenerse activo incluso en un mundo post-apocalíptico y completamente inhabitado por humanos.
En su momento me fascinó bastante cada uno de sus episodios, sobre todo por la forma tan natural de mezclar la comedia con la aventura y los diferentes elementos de ciencia ficción que posee. Pero lo más fascinante creo que fue que está ambientada en en mundo post-apocalíptico, con personajes que son robots sin emociones y extraterrestres y que la misma ausencia de humanos a lo largo del anime nos transmite una sensación de nostalgia que es fácil de contagiar. El anime también tiene muchos momentos divertidos, todo randoms y bastante entretenidos que no siguen una línea fija de tiempo.

The story unfolds as it recounts the various experiences of the residents of the Gingarou Hotel over the centuries in this completely abandoned land. We also meet many fascinating characters, each with their own stories to tell. But among its main characters, there are some who stand out thanks to their excellent character development. This is an anime that not only makes you laugh a lot with its humor—free of suggestive themes and any Fanservice—but also brings you to tears, especially in moments when we come to understand the true value of time.
What makes this anime perfect isn’t just everything its story conveys, but the natural way it shifts from calm, dialogue-light episodes to ones packed with action, drama, and even suspense. Added to all this is its audiovisual presentation, with animation quality that holds its own against the other anime mentioned earlier. The art style, character design, varied color palette, movement styles, transitions, camera angles, and other visual details are all excellent. The same goes for its magnificent soundtrack as well.
Personally, I give it a well-deserved 10/10 rating in the genres of science fiction, comedy, and drama.
La historia se narra y desarrolla contando las diferentes experiencias que viven los miembros del Hotel Gingarou a lo largo de los siglos en esta tierra completamente abandonada. Conocemos también a muchos personajes bastante interesantes, con historias propias que contarnos. Pero entre sus personajes principales hay quienes se destacan debido al excelente desarrollo que tienen. Este es un anime que no solo te hace reír bastante por su humor libre de temas sugerentes y nada de Fanservice, sino que también te hace llorar incluso en momentos donde conocemos el verdadero valor del tiempo.
Lo que hace perfecto este anime no es solamente todo lo que llega a transmitirnos su historia, sino su forma tan natural de pasar a darnos episodios tan tranquilos y con pocos diálogos a luego darnos episodios repletos de acción, drama y hasta suspenso. Sumado a todo esto también está su apartado audiovisual, teniendo una calidad de animación que compite perfectamente con el resto de animes anteriormente mencionados. Tanto el estilo de arte como el diseño de los personajes, la paleta variada de colores, los estilos de movimientos, transiciones, planos y demás detalles visuales son excelentes. Lo mismo ocurre con su grandiosa banda sonora también.
Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción, la comedia y el drama.
