Someone lived to tell the story that became an urban legend...

That person had trembling hands and a vacant stare. They asked me not to reveal their name, so, to honor their memory, I will focus only on what they told me. That was how our conversation began; it was the first time I heard about that man. It was an anecdote told in a hushed voice, like a secret shared when speaking of tragedies no one can explain.

It happened in a psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of the city. An exhausted nurse, after a twelve-hour shift, was making her nightly rounds when she heard a patient scream:

“Stay away!”

When she entered the room, she found him trembling and drenched in cold sweat in a corner. The man kept repeating that someone had tried to strangle him while he slept.

“There’s a man... He appears every time I’m about to fall asleep. He attacked me and told me that if I ever saw him again, he would kill me,” the patient told the nurse, his eyes filled with terror.

The nurse tried to calm him down, assuming it had all been a nightmare. The poor man suffered from insomnia, so it wasn’t unreasonable to think that this figure was a creation of his imagination.

However, three days later, the heart monitor in the room let out its final, piercing beep. The patient died of cardiac arrest while sleeping... And the face of his corpse was frozen in a petrified expression of terror. The poor man left this world having experienced unimaginable fear...

No one paid much attention to the cause of his death until the story repeated itself weeks later in a nursing home. Someone overheard Mrs. Gutiérrez, a lucid and calm woman despite her advanced age, telling her family during a visit that she had been having extremely vivid dreams for several nights.

“I hadn’t dreamed in years. I couldn’t even remember my dreams. But... lately, I’ve been dreaming about a strange man who watches me from a distance. I get a terrible feeling every time we make eye contact. I feel that if he touches me, I won’t wake up.”

The next morning, Mrs. Gutiérrez did not wake up... At her funeral, her relatives whispered that the autopsy had revealed a mysterious and inexplicable heart attack in the early hours of the morning. But she had no history of heart disease or any cardiac problems. Her heart had simply stopped while she slept.

Within months, cases ending in exactly the same way began multiplying all over the world. From Tokyo to Buenos Aires, randomly chosen people were dying in their beds.

The causes were not only identical—unexplained heart attacks during sleep. For some reason, all the victims shared one terrifying trait: in their final days, they had spoken desperately about the same figure... It was no longer just a nightmare.

I knew someone who had spoken to me directly about that man. My contact, an old friend who worked in healthcare, summoned me to a bar, terrified. For some reason science could not explain, people who dreamed of him did not forget anything upon waking; they were able to remember every detail of the dream almost perfectly, as if it were a real memory.

“He’s a disturbing man you can’t help but look at in terror,” my friend told me when describing him.

He wasn’t very clear about what exactly he meant, but the pallor of his face and the panic in his eyes gave me a clear idea of the horror he was trying to describe.

Shortly after that conversation, my friend stopped answering my calls. I learned from his relatives that he had died the day after we met. Now I understand that he was murdered by a monster that exists only in the world of dreams.

Fear consumed me for months, but the real nightmare began last night. Because I met him personally... The man from the nightmares arrives without warning. He simply appears, and you can’t stop looking at him.

In my dream, I was completely lost in a grayish forest beneath a gray, windless sky. Mist covered the ground, and the silence was so dense that I could hear nothing but my own breathing. Suddenly, between the dead tree trunks, a figure slowly advanced toward me. For some reason, I recognized him at a glance. I suppose knowing of his existence made me his next victim.

He appeared dressed in a dark, worn-out robe. He did not show me his face; the hood concealed his features. He did not hurry, but each step he took created a pressure that squeezed my chest.

He stopped just one meter away from me. Without revealing his face, he uttered a phrase like a whisper, but I heard it directly inside my head:

You’re unlucky to have seen me. It’s best if you ignore me next time.

After hearing this, I woke with a start, my heart racing so fast that it left me breathless. I pressed both hands against my chest, feeling a sharp pain that took minutes to disappear.

I’m writing this with every light in my house turned on because I’m extremely nervous... I refuse to sleep, but I don’t know how long I can keep this up. I don’t know what that thing is, but I can be certain that I’ll see it again... I don’t know how long I can endure without closing my eyes again.
