Mateo had not only lost something important but also someone important...
He used to wear a bracelet, but in a moment of carelessness, it vanished from his left wrist. When he realized, anguish swept through his body, making his skin crawl.
Mateo stopped abruptly in the middle of the sidewalk. He looked at his arm over and over again, but the black thread bracelet with a small engraved plate was no longer in sight.
Sofía had given it to him three months ago, on the day he turned seventeen. Two months later, she had decided to end the relationship.
"I need space," she had told him.
Since then, that bracelet had become a talisman, the thread that still kept him connected to her...
Frightened, Mateo returned home and searched all over his room, even rummaging under his bed.
"No, no, no. Not here," he whispered, feeling anxious.
Desperate, he turned around and started retracing his steps, mentally reviewing every minute of his afternoon to try to remember the last time he saw his beloved bracelet.
His first clear memory placed him in the neighborhood park. He recalled sitting on the bench staring at his phone, hesitating whether to send Sofía a message asking for a second chance.
Mateo ran to the park. He knelt in front of the bench, but there was nothing there. He searched among the dry leaves and dirt but found nothing. He ran his hands through the grass, ignoring the puzzled looks from a couple of ladies walking their dogs. Nothing... He found nothing.
Having ruled out the park, his mind jumped to the next spot in his routine. He had gone to the café to buy iced tea. He remembered paying with a credit card after putting his hand into his pants pocket. So maybe that was where he lost what he cherished most.
He sprinted to the café. Upon entering, he approached the counter.
"Excuse me... I was here an hour ago. By any chance, have you found a black thread bracelet?" he asked the cashier.
The employee, uninterested, looked under the counter and then checked a lost and found box.
"No, friend. Sorry."
Mateo’s stomach clenched and his desperation grew; a feeling of loss he had felt before returned...
Back home, to avoid running into friends and having to pretend he was okay, he took a shortcut through the alley behind the library. A narrow place surrounded by walls covered in graffiti. He recalled adjusting his backpack strap there and thought the strap might have snagged the talisman off his wrist.
When he reached the alley, night was falling and shadows stretched long. He turned on his phone’s flashlight and inspected every corner, behind trash bins, between cracks in the pavement. Sweat poured down his forehead relentlessly.
It was then, shining light on an empty corner of the alley, that the anxiety began to dissipate, leaving a vast emptiness and a painful clarity.
Mateo finally stopped. He switched off the flashlight and leaned against the brick wall. He was silent for nearly a minute, reflecting on his actions.
He wasn't looking for a mere possession. He was searching for a guarantee. He realized he had been using that bracelet as a shield against reality. Every day, looking at it, he secretly hoped Sofía would regret it, see how much he cherished her, and come running back into his arms. But...
“It’s an illusion,” he said aloud to himself.
Sofía was no longer by his side. She had moved on, and he was stranded, clinging to an object that no longer meant the same to both of them. Losing the bracelet was an accident, but maintaining the illusion that their relationship would return was an emotional lie he voluntarily told himself every morning.
Mateo took a deep breath, filling his lungs with air. He looked at his bare wrist. It looked strange, pale, but for the first time in weeks, he felt it was light. There was no bracelet to find because the past cannot be recovered by searching the ground.
He put his phone in his pocket, straightened his backpack, and walked toward the alley’s exit. He left the search behind. He accepted the loss and finally processed that his relationship was over.

"No, no, no. Aquí no" susurró sintiendo ansiedad.
Nada... No encontró nada.
"No, amigo.
