Yippee! It's finally a new year—yes! We made it. Is there something I know I should change? Am I ready to embrace those small changes that can make a difference in my life? My response to these questions isn't going to be a New Year's resolution per se; it's something I have thought through and realized how important it is for me to be intentional about the little things that matter in life.

You see, I used to be that type of person that didn't miss checking up on my relatives, both distant ones and close relatives, but then life happens, and I find myself getting lost in work, getting lost in family unending responsibilities, and all the buzz of life and more. The feeling of overwhelming is an understatement, but yet, I don't like creating communication gaps between my relatives, especially my family. At least technology had made things easier for us, and I should take advantage of it. Some time ago, my mom called and said, "Nkem, what's going on with your life that you forgot to check up on me for two weeks? This is unlike you." Hmmm, hearing this statement from my mum left me in reflection, after which I apologized, with her giving uncountable reasons, hehe. That very day around the end of November last year, I realized that I hadn't been keeping in touch like before and was already losing bonds between some of my relatives.

Right there I started adjusting and reconnecting with my people residing in different states. It gives me an unusual joy knowing that I and my blood are relating so closely. The little I did before the last year ran out unfolded something amazing, which one of my relatives revealed to me, and we brainstormed on the issue, which later brought back her happiness. One thing I noticed is that sometimes people confide only with those close to them and sometimes keep things within themselves because they feel unease with some people, but close communication can be an answer to such a person. We can't go wrong with keeping in touch with our dear ones, and it's one little change I am set to embrace this new year.

Finally, I have been this type of person that hardly misses journaling my daily tasks and goals and sticking with it consistently, but what I haven't been practicing is gratitude. However, I see reason to embrace change in this aspect of my life. Each night I plan to reflect on one thing among my daily goals that went well during the day and appraise my humble self no matter how small. Hopefully it will go a long way in keeping me motivated.
