I don't think I have seen or heard of a perfect country in our world. I love my country, I love our culture, I love our people, and I love how resilient most Nigerians are. There are things about my country that, when I look closely into them,it make me feel at home despite the shortcomings here and there in my country.
As much as I don't like how harsh our economy has become over the recent years, my first choice has been to live in my country and enjoy what it has to offer. I have never been a fan of living abroad; what I love is simply visiting abroad for holidays and adventures, but I doubt if this choice will still remain intact due to how things keep unfolding nowadays. We shall see.. Anyways, that's not the purpose of this post... Let me answer the Hive Naija weekly prompt as stated here.
As much as I love and value my country, there are a few things I would like to change if I had the capacity, and one of them is misuse of public funds. My country is blessed with natural resources, enough to make us live comfortably, but the reverse is the case. Since I started understanding my world as a teenager, what I kept hearing has been that we owe billions in debt to China and other countries. Year to year, there's no budget without debt and loan issues; the cycle kept rotating that way, and we kept sinking sand, going backwards always.I think our problem has been lack of accountability in leadership. Every batch of leaders has been going into the seat to cut their own slice of the national cake. There's no transparency, no accountability, but corruption and embezzlement left and right, taking the country backwards instead.
I am wondering when the misuse of public funds will come to an end. I am wondering if there's a way our leaders can be held accountable for every penny they spend. These people are well paid monthly; remove their misuse of public funds and see how much better our economy will become. It's a concern, a big concern, because each day, things keep getting tougher, and our leaders are the major contributing factor here.
Is it possible to have a system that enforces justice regardless of status considering the leaders? If we can have this, then the cycle of disappointment we get from these leaders may be curtailed. It's because they mess around with the public funds and go scot free each tenure, and that's why subsequent leaders will follow suit, and we the masses keep complaining without any positive result. What about the poor state of infrastructures and basic amenities? The schools, roads, hospitals, electricity, etc.—we are still far from the reality, and sometimes, I just imagine if things are done better, then the citizens will enjoy an improved country. If I have the capacity, these areas I mentioned would take a total reformation, but my major concern first is the accountability of the public fund. If this is attended to, then other aspects would be affected positively without stress.
A better Nigeria is achievable, but then transparency and responsibility must be observed on the part of our leaders and even the citizens where necessary.
