Previously, this was just a roundabout we had to pass through to get to various parts of the city. In the beginning, as I said, it was just a roundabout with curbs and covered only by dirt, so naturally it served only that purpose. However, they’ve renovated it, and in addition to being a roundabout, they’ve also turned it into a plaza. It really turned out beautifully, and I’d say it isn’t very crowded, since it’s an open plaza and during the day, because of the harsh sun, you can’t really stay there. But at night, I’ve seen many people come by and enjoy themselves; you can even exercise there if you want of course, while respecting the rules to keep the space in optimal condition. Now, let’s keep moving forward, and you’ll see how our iconic roundabout turned out.

In the distance, we can see the roundabout, and as I mentioned earlier, both the residents of Cumana and tourists should be familiar with it, since it allows us to reach many parts of the city. We can see several flags there, including those of Venezuela, Sucre State, and Cuba, among others. There is vegetation in the surrounding area, planted in flower beds bordered by blue painted curbs; the plants are small and varied, able to withstand a lack of water and endure the elements; we can also enjoy some medium sized palm trees.
The walkways or outdoor pedestrian access to the planters are constructed of poured, rustic, brushed concrete, separated by joints to enhance their appearance. Indeed, it is a modern structure that is a far cry from the purely functional roundabout that existed before, which had an appearance that left much to be desired. Now, it’s a roundabout, but we can all safely enjoy these spaces. On the outer perimeter, there is white LED lighting mounted on poles near the planters. The entire roundabout is beautified by our majestic sky and illuminated by the extraordinary sun.
We are now at its central structure and can see that it is built of concrete and washed granite. The predominant colors are shades of gray and beige; there are star-shaped designs and various patterns. It is a very safe surface for pedestrians, as it is slip-resistant in rainy weather, preventing injuries. The benches are made of reinforced concrete, and their surface is similar to that of the floor; they have a very distinctive shape.
One very beautiful and decorative feature is that underneath each bench, you can see LED spotlights in different colors. This lighting is fantastic because, thanks to the way they’re angled, all the lights point toward the center, where the bust of the national hero stands. I thought it was very ingenious, and at night it looks absolutely spectacular. I’ll share a photo of this multicolored beauty at night on another occasion.
In the center of the roundabout or square stands the bust of the Cuban national hero Jose Marti. The statue rests on a pedestal made of the same material as the pavement—a solid structure that withstands weather changes and any vibrations from the vehicles passing by. At the top of the pedestal stands the bust, and at the bottom is a plaque honoring him with a very apt quote or motto: “Action speaks louder than words”; its meaning is very important.
As mentioned earlier, from this roundabout we can travel to or from other parts of the city. For example, to the north, we take Andres Bello Avenue to reach or come from Perimetral Avenue or Cacique Maraguey. By following this avenue, we can leave Cumana for other nearby states, such as Anzoategui and Monagas. If we head south, we’ll find Bolivar Street; we can go to that street or come from it; the central hospital is located in that area.
To the east, we find the continuation of Gran Mariscal Avenue in both directions and its intersection with Carupano Avenue; via this avenue, we can also leave Cumana for other locations such as the municipality of Bolivar and Montes, among others. Finally, if you head west, you’ll find Gran Mariscal Avenue and Miranda Avenue—busy commercial thoroughfares where locals and visitors alike can find what they need. Additionally, you can reach or come from the city center via these avenues.

Anteriormente; esta era solo una redoma por donde teníamos que pasar para dirigirnos hacia varios lugares de la ciudad. En sus inicios; como dije, era solo una redoma con brocales de borde y cubierta solo por tierra, por lo que lógicamente cumplía solo esa función. Sin embargo; la han renovado y además de redoma, también la han convertido en una plaza. De verdad que quedó muy hermosa y digo que no es muy concurrida, ya que es una plaza abierta y en horas del día debido al inclemente sol no se puede estar allí. Pero en las noches si he visto a muchas personas acercarse y pasar momentos agradables, hasta ejercicio si lo desean se puede hacer en este sitio; claro está, respetando las normas para mantener el espacio en óptimas condiciones. Ahora; sigamos avanzando y verás como quedó nuestra emblemática redoma.

A lo lejos observamos la redoma y como dije antes; tanto los moradores de Cumaná, como los turistas deben conocer; ya que a través de ella nos podemos dirigir a muchos sectores de la ciudad. Tenemos presente varias banderas; entre ellas la de Venezuela, estado Sucre, Cuba entre otras. Se nota una vegetación a sus alderedesores, ubicadas en jardineras rodeadas de brocales pintados de azul; las plantas son pequeñas y variadas, las cuales pueden resistir la falta de agua y sorportar la intemperie; además también podemos disfrutar de medianas palmeras.
Las caminerías o acceso peatonal exterior a las jardineras, está construido en concreto vaciado, rústico y cepillado separado por juntas para darle realce. Ciertamente; es una estructura moderna y se aleja totalmente de la funcionalidad de solo redoma que existía antes, la cual tenía una visual que dejaba mucho que desear. Ahora; es redoma, pero todos podemos disfrutar sanamente de estos espacios. En su parte externa se cuenta con iluminación led blanca, la cual está ubicada en los postes cerca de las jardineras. Toda la redoma es embellecida por nuestro magestuoso cielo, e iluminado por el extraordinario sol.
Ya estamos en la su estructura central y notamos que está construida en concreto y granito lavado. Los colores que predominan son tonos grises y beige; existen formas de estrella y distintos estampados. Es un piso muy seguro para los peatones, ya que en tiempos de lluvia es antiresbalante evitando daños que lamentar en las personas. Los bancos están construidos en concreto armado y la superficie es similar a la del piso; tienen una forma muy peculiar.
Un aspecto muy hermoso y decorativo, es que debajo de cada banco podemos visualizar reflectores led en distintos colores. Esta iluminación es fantástica, porque debido a la dirección, todas las luces apuntan hacia el centro donde se ubica el busto del Prócer. Me pareció muy ingenioso y de noche se ve sumamente espectacular. En otra oportunidad les ofrezco esta belleza multicolor en horas nocturnas.
En el centro de la redoma o plaza; encontramos el busto del Prócer Cubano José Martí. La imagen está sobre un pedestal construido del mismo material del piso; una estructura sólida, que soporta los cambios climáticos y las posibles vibraciones de los vehículos que por su alrededor transitan. En la parte superior del pedestal encontramos el busto y en la parte inferior, una placa que rinde honenaje a este personaje, con un pensamiento o lema muy acertado; "Hacer es la mejor manera de decir"; su interpretación es muy importante.
Como se mencionó anteriormente; desde esta redoma podemos venir o dirigirnos hacia otros sectores de la ciudad. Por ejemplo; al norte nos vamos por la Avenida Andrés Bello para llegar o venir desde la Avenida Perimetral o Cacique Maraguey. Siguiendo esta avenida podemos salir de Cumaná hacia otros estados cercanos, por ejemplo Anzoátegui y Monagas. Si nos ubicamos al sur; tenemos la calle Bolívar, podemos ir a esa calle o venir de ella; por esos lados encontramos el hospital central.
Al este; encontramos de ida y vuelta la continuación de la Avenida Gran Mariscal y su intercepción con la Avenida Carupano; por esta avenida, también podemos salir de Cumaná hacia otras localidades como el municipio Bolívar, Montes, entre otros. Por último; si vas al oeste, tenemos la Avenida Gran Mariscal y Avenida Miranda; avenidas muy comerciales, donde propios y visitantes pueden encontrar solución a sus necesidades. Además; podemos llegar o venir del centro de la ciudad.
De verdad que hemos tenido una vista maravillosa, al visitar esta redoma emblemática y sumamente importante para el transitar vehicular. Este sitio es punto de referencia de la ciudad y hoy la has conocido para que te enteres donde se encuentra y hacia donde puedes ir si pasas por ella.
