....English Version....

From Real Life to the Map: Student Square in Cumana. Today we are visiting the iconic Armando Zuluaga Blanco Square, named in honor of the distinguished student and political activist of yesteryear. Although this Venezuelan hero was born in Caracas, he died in Cumaná during his armed struggle, which is why the square bears his name. However, because it has been the epicenter of political, social, and—mostly—student gatherings, it is also known as the Student Square. I have many memories of that plaza from my school days; that’s where I would meet with my classmates to learn and plan school activities at all levels.

The greatest thing about this plaza is that it’s located on Mariño Street, right in the heart of the city. It’s very spacious and surrounded by an incredible green space. For anyone visiting the city center, this plaza is, without a doubt, a must-see. What’s more, it’s not just visited by visitors—the surrounding neighborhoods also enjoy it to the fullest. It’s a place for recreation and, as I mentioned before, a gathering spot for students. In particular, when I’m out and about in that area and do a lot of walking, this plaza is the perfect spot for a relaxing break. So, my friends, let’s enjoy a beautiful and pleasant stroll.

The layout of this plaza features a spacious, quadrangular design; it has several strategically placed walkways that converge on a large central space, leading to the iconic centerpiece—the pedestal and bust of Armando Zuluaga Blanco. The perimeter of the plaza also features wide walkways that direct foot traffic toward the various streets. The outer curbs are blue, as are the inner curbs—which are slightly higher—and which separate the walkways from the massive planters. It truly is a unique design; at least here in Cumaná, I haven’t seen any other places with similar features; it is undoubtedly a place to be enjoyed in all its splendor.

Inside the square, we can see many benches, strategically placed throughout the area. They are made of reinforced concrete, with a smooth finish in two different shades; they are traditional-style benches. In addition, we can enjoy a nice rest under the lush vegetation that covers the plaza. It’s worth noting that these benches come in different sizes, so they can accommodate varying numbers of people. Another point worth mentioning is that the plaza is also surrounded on the outside by shopping centers and food vendors offering an unlimited variety of options.

As we walk through any of the walkways, we arrive at the heart of the action, where we can see an open and dynamic space, with a statue honoring Armando Zuluaga Blanco at its center. Once there, we see a pedestal with two steps at its base. The pedestal is made of concrete and covered with polished, granite-style porcelain. On top of it stands the bust of the distinguished Armando Zuluaga Blanco, which, unfortunately at that moment, bore marks left by mischievous birds—hehehe, what a thing.

The plaza’s floor is predominantly made of reinforced concrete, divided by joints. Closer to the center, right where the pedestal and bust are located, there is a circular concrete floor—in this case, polished concrete with dividing joints. I must confess that, although it’s clear the plaza is constantly maintained in terms of cleanliness, the structure itself should also be properly maintained to make it even more beautiful than it already is.

As for the vegetation, it is very abundant and can be seen in the planters of various sizes throughout the plaza. On either side, the planters are large and filled with a wide variety of vegetation—from lush grass to small plants and large, centuries-old trees; this plaza is steeped in history. It also features long, narrow planters that divide the walkways; honestly, visiting this plaza and enjoying all it has to offer is a real treat.

We can’t overlook the lighting; it’s provided by LED lights mounted atop the lampposts, which are strategically placed to illuminate the plaza evenly. All that’s left is to invite you to explore this and other plazas that represent the history and traditions of our beloved Cumaná; if you’re ever in the area, the Plaza Armando Zuluaga Blanco awaits you with open arms. Best regards, and see you soon.
