It is a plaza that truly embodies the spirit of the people and serves as an icon for all of us; moreover, because it is such a busy area, it has become a major traffic hub. Every time we pass by there, all the music and joy that María conveyed always come to mind. How could we forget the “Oración del Tabaco,” or the “baile de la culebra,” or simply that tribute she paid to the Manzanares River? How could we forget that flower she always wore on her head—it was like an extension of her body—that bright red cayenne flower, just as vivid as the memory of her remains in the minds and hearts of all the people of Cumaná. Come with me, and let’s experience together the magic of walking through this square, filled with so much emotion and color.

The plaza is located on Fernandez de Serpa Avenue, right next to the roundabout that also bears the mermaid’s name. You can access it from north to south, from east to west, and vice versa. If we enter from the south, we’ll notice that right in the center there’s a large, colorful walkway. It’s a concrete pavement decorated in blue, yellow, and gray, forming the perfect mural—the sea and the Cumaná sun are the focal points. Through this walkway, we can reach the open area, where various cultural activities take place.
On the other hand, along and on either side of the walkway, there is a series of concrete benches positioned alternately. As I mentioned earlier, they are made of concrete, and their lower sections are the same color as the walkway. The top is gray. We continue our journey and notice that we’re beneath an incredible canopy of sky, which complements the color of the central walkway. Upon reaching the open area, we see the most vibrant colors here; the floor is also concrete, but it combines blue and yellow with the red of the large cayenne pepper that represents the mermaid Maria Rodriguez.
Our journey isn't over yet; because, as I said before, we can enjoy this plaza from different angles, and to do so, we can see that the central walkway is connected to other diagonal walkways paved with red cobblestones. We also notice that along the edge of the plaza, there are sidewalks where people can walk if they don't want to walk through the center of the plaza.
These walkways allow you to enter from both sides of the avenue, as well as exit onto it. It’s certainly a well-designed space that brings great satisfaction to those who visit it; we had a wonderful time here, and remember, there are trash cans on either side so please don’t leave trash in the plaza. The plaza’s upkeep and longevity also depend on us; it’s very easy to enjoy it responsibly.
The open space is absolutely beautiful; I’d already told you that blue and yellow blend here with the red of the cayenne. On either side are some unique benches, shaped differently from the previous ones. These have a sort of concrete wall on either side, connected by a central concrete slab. They’re blue and gray and sit in the shade of a structure made of iron and wood, covered with green asphalt shingles.
But the main attraction is the monument honoring Maria Rodriguez; we see a granite floor, and on top of it, a concrete pedestal with a plaque dedicated to her. At the top—the most beautiful part—is a stunning cayena flower, resembling the one the Siren of Cumana always wore on her head. This beautiful, modern plaza is full of life and vibrant color.
As for the vegetation, it is very diverse; and while the central walkway may catch your eye at first, you’ll also notice the vegetation lining both sides. There are several concrete planters, painted the same colors as the walkway; they come in various shapes and are strategically placed. They contain palm trees, trinitaria flowers, chaguaramos, and other plants.
Likewise, we can see that the grass covers the area evenly, and there is also shade provided by large trees. A place of total harmony and recreation for everyone—an afternoon of conversation, exercise, meditation, or playing with the children—you can enjoy it all here without any problems; the sun and the sea breeze will also be our companions.
To wrap up our tour of this wonderful plaza, I can’t leave out a mention of the lighting. Here, the LED lights are the crowning jewel and are mounted on all the lampposts surrounding the structure. We have dual lighting, as the lights shine both toward the plaza and toward the avenue. Es una Plaza que verdaderamente representa el sentir popular y es ícono de todos nosotros; además, por ser una zona muy concurrida, se ha convertido en un importe distribuidor vial. Cada vez que pasamos por allí; siempre se nos viene a la mente toda la música y la alegría que María transmitía. Como olvidar la Oración del Tabaco, o el baile de la culebra; o simplemente aquel homenaje que le diera al Río Manzanares. Como olvidar aquella flor que siempre llevaba en su cabeza y era como parte activa de su cuerpo, aquella cayena de color rojo vivo, como vivo ha quedado su recuerdo en la mente y corazón de todos los Cumaneses. La plaza está ubicada en la Avenida Fernández de Serpa y justamente está al lado de la redoma que también lleva el nombre de la sirena. Para accesar a ella, lo podemos hacer de norte a sur, de este a oeste y viceversa. Si entramos por la parte sur; observarmos que en todo el centro, tenemos una gran caminería llena de mucho color. Es un piso construido en concreto, decorado con colores azul, amarillo y gris que le dan la perfecta forma de mural; el mar y el sol Cumanés son la clave. A través de esta caminería, podemos llegar hasta la zona abierta, que es donde se realizan diversas actividades culturales.
Por otra parte; tenemos a lo largo y a los lados de la caminería, una serie se bancos de concreto posicionados de forma alterna. Los mismos; como dije antes, están construidos en concreto, llevando en su parte inferior el mismo colorido que la caminería. La parte superior es de color gris. Continuamos el viaje y notamos que estamos bajo un techo de cielo increíble, el cual combina con el color del pasadizo central. Al llegar a la zona abierta, aquí se presenta el mayor colorido; el piso igualmente de concreto, pero se combina el color azul y amarillo, con el rojo de la gran cayena que representa a la Sirena María Rodríguez.
Nuestro viaje aun no termina; porque como dije antes, podemos disfrutar de esta plaza desde diferentes ángulos y para ello; observamos que a la caminería central, se conectan otras caminerías diagonales construidas con adoquines rojos. También notamos que en el borde de la plaza, existen aceras por donde la gente puede pasar, sino desea hacerlo internamente por la plaza.
Estas caminerías permiten entrar desde ambos lados de la avenida, así como salir hacia ella. Ciertamente; es un espacio bien diseñado y proporciona mucha satisfacción a aquellos que lo visitan; la pasamos muy bien aquí y recuerda, que los depósitos de basura están a los lados para que no dejes desperdicios en la plaza. El mantenimiento y durabilidad de la misma, también depende de nosotros; disfrutarla sanamente es muy fácil.
El espacio abierto es una total belleza; ya les había dicho que aquí se mezclan el azul y amarillo, con el rojo de la cayena. A los lados se encuentran unos bancos especiales, con forma diferente a los anteriores. Estos tienen una especie de muro de concreto a los lados, los cuales se conectan a través de una plancha central también de concreto. Azul y gris son sus colores y están bajo la sombra de una estructura fabricada con hierro y madera, protegida con teja asfáltica verde.
Pero la atracción principal, es el monumento en honor a María Rodríguez; vemos un piso de granito y sobre él, un pedestal de concreto con una placa alusiva a la homenajeada. En la parte superior, lo más hermoso; la construcción de una flor de cayena impresionante, que asemeja a la que siempre llevaba en su cabeza la Sirena de Cumaná. Vida y mucho color es lo que vemos en esta hermosa y moderna plaza.
En el apartado de la vegetación, podemos decir que es muy variada; y si en un principio notamos la caminería central; también pudieron notar la vegetación que está de lado a lado. Existen varias jardineras construidas en concreto, con los mismos colores de la caminería; las mismas tienen formas variadas y están distribuidas de forma estratégica. Contienen palmeras, trinitarias, chaguaramos entre otras plantas.
De igual manera; observamos que la grama está cubriendo la zona de manera uniforme y también se cuenta con la sombra de árboles de gran tamaño. Un sitio para la total armonía y recreación de todos; una tarde de conversación, de ejercicios, de meditación o de juego con los niños, la puedes tener aquí sin ningún tipo de problemas; el sol y el aire marino, también serán nuestros acompañantes.
Para finalizar con el recorrido por esta maravillosa plaza; no podría faltar el comentario con respecto a la iluminación. Aquí las luces LED son la joya de la corona y están situadas en todos los postes que están alrededor de la estructura. Tenemos luz dual; ya que las mismas apuntan hacia la plaza y hacia la Avenida.
