Our Wedding: A Second Chance Amid Sadness. I met my wife in 1997; everything went very well, and we got married on December 4, 1999. From then on, we spent nearly 17 wonderful years together—two children, family, a good relationship—a relationship that gradually began to deteriorate, and in 2016, we decided to get a divorce. Those were very difficult times for her, for my children, and, of course, for me; our children were still relatively young and could never understand why things were the way they were, but we had no choice but to adapt little by little. Despite all of this, the divorce went through; she never stopped thinking about the children, and even though we were both focused on moving on with our lives, the bond with the kids was too strong—so much so that their mother and I never lost touch.
Well, it turns out that after our separation in 2016, up until 2022, rather than fading away, I think our relationship actually grew a little stronger, and it was precisely in 2022 that we decided to get back together. If I recall correctly, I mentioned this on an episode of @aliento where I shared the whole story. We’d always planned to get married again, but as time went on, that had taken a back seat due to family difficulties; however, we could do it at any time. Now, because of my dad’s illness—which began with a tumor in 2022—things got very tense. He managed to recover, but in 2024 it happened again. We tried to operate on him last year, but during routine tests, leukemia was diagnosed; that devastated all of us, because it was a very rare form of the disease.

Dad was continuing with his treatment, with almost no success, and to top it all off, I’m dealing with what you’ve all read about—my thyroid cancer and my possible axillary cancer or lymphoma. By the way, I still haven’t received the final biopsy results, so my anxiety is through the roof. But another issue has come up: my daughter’s pregnancy, which is initially considered a bit high-risk, and for now, she can only move around when absolutely necessary. Our wedding had been postponed several times because Dad wasn’t in town, and we wanted him to enjoy that moment too.
Now, we didn’t know what the future held for either my dad or me, so we made a quick decision to get married a few days before my surgery. Militza went to the civil registry office, and they told her it would take at least 15 days; she explained the situation, and the very next day we were there, getting married. The ceremony began with the reading of the articles and the required questions for the occasion; there was a tense calm, a tense joy—surgery was imminent—and all of this without realizing that my dad would pass away almost a month later; a very sad turn of events, since we had planned to celebrate upon his return, but a very aggressive illness robbed us of that hope.

We all signed the guest book; we even managed to find two impromptu witnesses for the occasion. Only my son was able to be there for that moment; as I told you before, my daughter is pregnant and couldn’t handle all that running around. We always thought that getting married again would be so much better than the first time, but what you think is one thing, and what actually happens is another. We’re back, but with broken hearts. So much has happened, and we thought that at some point we’d be celebrating this marriage together with my father—celebrating his return alive and celebrating this second chance that life has given us.

The truth is that Dad would have been so happy to have attended this wedding, because we’d mentioned it to him quite a bit: “Get well, old man, so you can enjoy it with us.” Because we knew that my parents had also been very sad when we got divorced; even so, they never lost touch with her. And when they found out we were coming back, they were overjoyed; but he wasn’t able to be there in person, even though we know he’ll always be with us in spirit and in heart.
Truly, Vicente Fernández’s song “When I wanted to grow up,”—forgive the repetition—is a reality, and it fills me with so much pain, because whenever I had the chance, I’d send Dad an audio message of that song when we were apart, or—with great difficulty—I’d sing it to him on Father’s Day; that next Father’s Day will forever be spent apart from you, Dad; but I know that from heaven you’re celebrating this wedding. “Oh Lord, I beg you to stop time, because you can do it; because I truly don’t understand why the good things slip away from us.”
