It’s common to see many locals and tourists visiting this plaza, especially during Carnival and Holy Week. It’s a rewarding experience to witness the blessing of the sea from this spot on Easter Sundays. Similarly, when the Cruz de Mayo is celebrated, it’s a great opportunity to visit the Cruz de Caigüire to enjoy these cultural events.
However, it’s also extremely common to see many people early in the morning walking, jogging, and doing all kinds of exercises, both inside and outside the plaza. How could you not? The entire landscape invites us to enjoy unique moments that fill us with energy and free us from everyday stress. That’s why I invite you to feel part of this journey and let yourself be swept away by such beautiful views.

We begin our visit by looking at the site from the side, and the view seems straight out of an oil painting. There’s a large rock outside, and the cross is surrounded by mangroves, benches, and a sort of fence, giving the impression of a boardwalk. The combination of the blue sky, sun, and sea is wonderful, as we stand facing the majestic Gulf of Cariaco. Not to mention, in the distance, the mountain ranges that make up the magnificent Araya Peninsula, or the municipality of Cruz Salmeron Acosta.
On either side, there are benches that we will describe later; for now, we will focus on the cross. The cross is made of rustic wood from simple logs. It stands on a solid concrete base covered with pieces of ceramic. From its base, you can see a sort of walkway, also made of concrete and similarly covered with white and beige ceramic pieces. On either side, there is a green concrete floor that has become slightly worn over the years due to the passage of time and sea salt.
As I mentioned earlier, the cross is surrounded by concrete benches built on a base made of the same material. At the top, just like on the floor, there are pieces of ceramic that add a special touch. The vegetation in this area consists of button mangroves, a type of plant that grows in marine environments and, naturally, can withstand these types of conditions.
The blue sky, the bright sun, and the Gulf of Cariaco make this place even more beautiful—a view we can enjoy from the boardwalk behind the cross. The boardwalk is made of concrete, supported by white-painted pipes. From there, you can feel the sea spray as the waves crash against the rocks at the foot of the boardwalk.
I’ll give you a close-up look at what I told you about when we’re on the boardwalk. We see a lot of rocks being pounded by the waves, and when we’re there, the sea splashes us all over—even more so when the wind is really strong, and we really do get drenched by the water from the Gulf. I have to say, I had that experience a while back.
On the other hand, as we turned around, we also enjoyed the splendor of the Pan de Azúcar hill, which also graces the landscape in a magnificent way, and we ended with a living painting; take a close look at the final image so you can delight in such a beautiful landscape; it looks just like an oil painting. Es normal, ver a muchos residentes y a turistas visitar esta plaza; especialmente en temporadas de Carnaval y Semana Santa. Es una experiencia gratificante, presenciar desde este sito la bendición del mar los domingos de resurrección. De igual manera; cuando se celebra la Cruz de Mayo, es propicia la oportunidad para acudir a la Cruz de Caigüire para disfrutar de estos eventos culturales.
Sin embargo; también es sumamente común ver a tempranas horas de la mañana, a muchas personas que se dedican a caminar, trotar y a realizar todo tipo de ejercicios, dentro y fuera de la plaza. Como no hacerlo; si todo el paisaje nos invita a pasar momentos únicos que nos llenan de energía y nos liberan del estrés cotidiano. Por ello; los invito a sentirse parte de este recorrido y a liberarse con tan hermosas vistas.

Iniciamos nuestra visita; observando el lugar desde su parte lateral y tenemos una vista que parece sacada de una pintura al óleo. Tenemos una gran roca en su exterior y la cruz rodeada de árboles marinos, bancos y una especie de cerca, que nos da la impresión de un malecón. La compañía del cielo azul, sol y mar son maravillosas; puesto que nos encontramos frente al majestuoso Golfo de Cariaco. Sin olvidar a los lejos, las estructuras montañosas que conforman la grandiosa Península de Araya o Municipio Cruz Salmerón Acosta.
De lado a lado, nos encontramos con bancos que vamos a describir más adelante; ya que nos centraremos en la cruz. La misma, está elaborada con madera rústica de troncos simples. Está colocada en una base sólida de cemento, cubierta por trozos de cerámica. Desde su base se aprecia una especie de caminería; también a base de cemento cubierta igualmente con trozos cerámicos blancos y beige. A los lados, piso de cemento en color verde un poco desgastado por el paso de los años y el salitre marino.
Como hice mención anteriormente; la cruz está rodeada por bancos construidos en concreto sobre una base hecha del mismo material. En la parte superior, tenemos al igual que en el piso, trozos de cerámica que le dan un toque especial. La vegetación presente en este recinto es de mangle botoncillo; un tipo de vegetación que se da en los sectores marinos y lógicamente aguantan este tipo de ambientes.
El cielo azul, el sol radiante y el Golfo de Cariaco embellecen el lugar; hermosura que podemos disfrutar desde el malecón detrás de la cruz. El mismo está construido con una superficie de cemento, soportada por tubos pintados de blanco. Desde allí sientes el salpicar del mar, cuando las olas chocan con las rocas que están al pie del malecón.
Te ofrezco una vista muy de cerca de lo que te dije cuando estamos en el malecón. Vemos una gran cantidad de rocas que sienten los embates de las olas y cuando estamos allí, el mar nos salpica por completo; más aún cuando el viento es muy potente y de verdad que salimos bautizados por el agua del Golfo. Debo decir, que he tenido esa experiencia hace algo de tiempo.
Por otra parte; al darnos vuelta, también disfrutamos del esplendor del cerro pan de azúcar, que también adorna el paisaje de una manera magistral y finalizamos con una pintura viviente; observen a profundidad la imagen final, para que se deleiten de tan hermoso paisaje; parece toda una pintura en óleo. Hemos llegado al final de la visita, pero yo me quedo aquí para seguir disfrutando de esta belleza y hacer un poco de ejercicio; nos vemos pronto con más de nuestro estado Sucre.
