I was rushed to the hospital at about 12:00am on a Friday evening. I could not stand, I could not sit and I could not walk. I was not attended to immediately, I was told I had to register first and buy the hospital card which was sold at N5,000 after which I will have to wait so I could be given a chance to see the doctor.

I waited in severe preterm labour pains and my strength was already beginning to fail me. I had not had any meal since morning because I did not feel like eating anything.

My lips had turned scaly while my eyes were bloodshot red, yes I got the courage to stare at myself in the bathroom mirror before leaving the house. I was peeing every back and forth.

After we registered and bought the hospital card, they checked my blood pressure and my sugar level. I and my family members who rushed me to the hospital, waited patiently for us to be called in. I was in severe pain.

We were finally attended to at the hospital after about fifteen minutes. The Doctor we were called upon to go and see the doctor, after which the doctor had a little conversation with me and checked me and then I was admitted into the labour ward.

Immediately I was taken to the labour ward, I saw a man who brought in a new born baby. This baby was making a very funny sound and looking for food, she was so adorable. Some minutes later, the baby's mother was brought in on a carrier, that was when I realized that she had been operated on, she looked lifeless on the carrier. She was laid on the bed and two drips were connected to her.

She was the mother of the baby. She had just gone through a C-section to bring forth life. She was still in deep sleep. The man who carried the baby was her husband. A baby bed was later wheeled in and the baby was placed inside of it.

By my right hand was another woman who also laid like she was lifeless by the other side of the bed. She was fully dripped too, I heard she also went through C-section but her baby did not make it. This particular woman woke up about 3:00am and asked after her baby, she was told that her baby was in the Oxygen room. She closed her mouth and slept back. She woke up again about 7:00am this time, fully conscious, looked around, saw her sister and asked if her husband had arrived and her sister said no. Then she asked who owned the other baby that was laid over there and started crying. She cried for going through such pains without her bundle of joy. She was consoled by every conscious person in the ward including the nurses who came to check up on her.

By this time, the other woman had woken up with full consciousness too and asked after her baby and the gender and she was told her baby was by her side and it was a baby girl. She thanked God and went back to sleep again, her husband sitting by her side.

I felt sad for the other lady and was praying quietly in my heart when I saw some nurses step in to do some clean ups on the mother of the alive baby.

This was how I came to the conclusion that women put their life on the line for the sake of reproduction. I wish safe delivery for all expectant mothers. Every woman deserves some accolades.
