🌑What is your favorite color? Describe how it makes you feel when you see it or are near it.
Gbam! a loud sound came, followed by Cooooourt! the clerk shouted as he dragged at the top of his voice. The next thing I saw was a light skinned woman in a black and red robe, she was well covered, she even wore white gloves on her hands and a grey colored wig. This particular wig looked exceptional, this was not the regular wig I do see on ladies' heads. I admired her looks and the fact that she was given a standing ovation to enter into the court room and she sat down before anyone sat.
She looked powerful. Then I turned to my left and to my right, I saw a dock, I saw some other people dressed up in black and white and robe in a black gown and a grey wig. They sat in a properly arranged manner, some were men and some were women, some looked older than the others. I tried to count them and they were up to twenty.
In front of them were some court clerks whom I noticed were trying to put some files together and as well jot down some things. Behind the dock were lots of people sitting on well arranged very long chairs. I sat amongst them. The people I saw looked like people from different walks of life. I also saw some uniformed police officers and prison warders who had earlier arrived in their various vehicles accompanying their prisoners.
People from the press seemed to have filled outside the courtroom and some were inside. The environment was looking tense.
The people in black and white robes were lawyers (legal practitioners) and the woman in black and red robe was the Chief Judge of my state. My boss, a very senior lawyer, was seated at the first roll, he was accompanied by two young lawyers, a male and a female. It was my second week at work as a secretary in a Law Firm and I was asked by my boss to accompany them to the Court as I will run some errands for them after the court proceedings.
A particular charge number was called upon, this was a criminal case which had been handled by my boss for about five years in court. The doors of the Court room were closed by Court orderly. Policemen were on standby.
The court clerk, after calling out the case, stated that it was for judgment and handed the case file to the Chief Judge. The lawyers representing the defense and the Lawyers for the State announced their appearances. The presence of the Accused persons and Complainant was also acknowledged.
The Chief Judge looked up, adjusted her glasses and began. The accused persons were brought before this honourable court on seven count charges…… she called all the charges and started passing her judgment.
Two ladies who sat beside me, started shedding tears quietly. The court room was beginning to be more tense as nobody could utter a cough. The judgement lasted for about an hour, three accused persons were found guilty and sentenced accordingly while the other two, my bosses client and the client of another lawyer were discharged and acquitted.
I noticed something. Immediately the judge finished reading her judgment, she rose, went through the backdoor and entered into a waiting Prado, she was accompanied by some police officers and her vehicle immediately zoomed off.
Now people began to express themselves within and outside the Courtroom, some were crying while some were celebrating. My boss was happy that his client was not sentenced alongside others but was discharged and acquitted. The joys of my boss's client and his family members who were there present knew no bounds. They seemed to have added more regards for my boss.
I noticed that lawyers were gaining the attention of ordinary people like me and I was barely noticeable in the midst of so many.
Because of the power in which the Chief Judge earned and commanded by her profession and the exceptional beauty I saw in the robe of lawyers and that of the Chief Judge, I decided that I will go for a second degree to study Law in the University.
I saw how peoples’ freedom and rights seemed to be at the mercy of these legal practitioners and how they acted as Solicitors and tried to save their clients at all costs. I told myself once again, that there is more beauty in the law profession and I will definitely go for it.
When we got back to the office, I told one of my bosses lawyers that I would love to go back to school and study Law. She encouraged me and told me that law was actually her second degree and she started this second degree as a wife and a mother of three and her family responsibilities could not stop her ambitions because she was determined.
She further encouraged me that I can do even better, after all the Chief Judge was a wife and a mother of Four. She crowned it up with the saying that every woman could fly as high as she can imagine, except she can't imagine it.
My love for the profession made me love the color black with all my heart because it has a lot to do with my favorite profession which I am dreaming of acquiring. I will use my profession to solicit for more people and also gain more power and momentum in life.
I know and believe that when given the slightest opportunity, I will go back to school and study Law because I can fly as high as I have imagined.
In all humility, I am using this medium to encourage every woman out there, that you can do better, you can be the best version of yourself, you can badge that degree, you can earn that position, you can be that person. It can be just as you have imagined. Go get the bag!
