Whatever you do, Do it in a SMART way.

SMART in this title has nothing to do with the "smart" as in the "smart"phones, nor does it literally translate to the meaning of the smart. It is actually an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Generally, this term is associated with goals as SMART goals and despite this term being coined more than 4 decades ago, it is still a popular and effective strategy to plan and achieve the goals. The good thing about this strategy is that it is valid for both individuals and organizations.

Be Specific.

When we think about the future, a lot of thoughts come into our mind, we need to focus so that we can prioritize our goals and make a very "specific" outline of the goals that we want to achieve. For ex., I should lose weight or I should go on vacation are goals but when we specify that I like to lose 10 kg of weight or I need to go on vacation at Disneyland, make it specific.

Measurable.

To track your progress of the goal, we need to measure or track the progress of the goal For losing weight, weight lost in Kg with time is a measurable parameter. For vacation, accumulating the desired fund required for vacation and your current fund holding is one of the measurable criteria.

Attainable.

Another factor should be considered for goal attainability, The Primary purpose of goal creation is to keep us focused and motivated to reach towards the goal. It should not be made in such a way that we get crushed under it. For ex. making the goal of losing too much weight might have health implications, Having goals for a vacation fund but current earnings are too little to add funds to your vacation goal funds. So we have to see that the goals are attainable in our current state if we maintain our focus.

Relevant.

We create goals mainly for the betterment purpose so it is important to know the benefit and relevancy of that goal. For ex., if you need to go to college but instead you are ignoring college funds and accumulating vacation funds is not a relevant one. If you are already fit and have the right weight medically, then losing weight may be not the right goal to follow.

Time Bound.

It is very important to fix the time window for reaching the goal. Deadlines are set for the work so the same goes for the goals also.

So what smart goals you are creating for yourself?
