Today I did a city run in my home town Rotterdam.
Most of the times I prefer runs just outside the city that are a little more in the nature, but the city also has a lot to offer!

While I ran the Rotterdam Marathon in 2024, I will run it again in April 2025 as from all races I did - this was one of the most memorable events so far.

Today I did not feel like running at all. Having the voice in my head suggesting to cut corners (run a 21km route, do recovery pace, take the subway home) I managed to push those thoughts aside and did my planned route in a relaxed but steady pace. After 10km I forgot that I didn’t feel like running and had quite a good time.

route
From my place to city center then to the Erasmusbridge heading to Rotterdam South. After that I used the cyclist Maastunnel to get to Dijkzigt and run back to the center and back home.

Maastunnel always messes with you as they have very steep escalators where people can place their bikes on. These things go very very slow and steps are just a little too high. So either you are waiting and getting out of rythm or you risk getting out of breath by running up the stairs (or hurting your knees) as by then you already had 15km. Today I ran the stairs both ways (in slow pace).

What I love about the route is that you can easily add a few more parts from the marathon route to prepare yourself the best you can. From the city center you can go to add Kralingse Plas (+6km) or head to Slinge before going to Maastunnel (+8km).

timing
Today I went on a day that most people have off due to Christmas holiday, on a friday around shopping rush hour. Despite liking the route, I didn’t like all those people, cars and traffic lights. Normally I run these type of routes early Sunday mornings.
But it definitly felt good!
Happy running!
