Pichincha Square in Cumana seems to have a soul and a life of its own. Unlike other public spaces, the lighting here tends to be somewhat gloomy because the trees block the streetlights from illuminating the area properly; as a result, when you’re here at night, the atmosphere feels eerie: the dim light and the swaying of the bushes make the shadows dance around passersby, creating somewhat unsettling scenes.
This iconic plaza is named in commemoration of the battle fought on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano in Quito, Ecuador. Led by the illustrious military leader and strategist from Cumana, Antonio Jose de Sucre, the independence army defeated the royalist forces defending Spain’s interests, thereby securing Quito’s emancipation.
The bust of Antonio Jose de Sucre is still preserved in good condition in the plaza; it has relentlessly withstood the ravages of vandalism. It stands imposingly against the green backdrop around it; behind it, like a stage set, is the Coffee with Bracamonte and the Seminary, which houses the headquarters of the Santa Rosa Catholic University.

Strolling through the city fills me with satisfaction, and that’s how I discover new places to explore. Alma’s curious eyes sparkle with happiness when she shares these moments with her family, and that also fills my heart with joy.

La Plaza Pichincha de Cumaná parece tener alma y vida propia. Pasear por la ciudad me llena de satisfacción, así voy buscando nuevos lugares por explorar. Los ojos curiosos de Alma brillan de felicidad cuando comparte estos momentos en familia y eso también llena de alegría mi corazón.
