The UK government has announced new measures that will introduce an overnight social media curfew for 16 and 17 year olds. Under the plan, apps such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube will be unavailable by default between midnight and 6:00 am, although teenagers will be able to switch the restriction off in their account settings. The proposal also includes turning off features like autoplay and infinite scrolling by default, with the aim of improving sleep, reducing late night screen time, and helping teenagers stay more focused during the day.

This is part of a growing trend where governments are becoming more involved in how young people use social media. Russia was among the first countries to push for stronger controls on online platforms, and several others have since followed with their own approaches. Australia, for example, has pursued much stricter restrictions by trying to keep younger teenagers off social media altogether, but that approach has sparked plenty of debate and questions about how practical it is. Social media has become such a large part of modern life that cutting it off completely can leave teenagers feeling isolated from their friends and daily conversations.

The UK's proposal feels more like a middle ground. It does not ban social media, nor does it prevent teenagers from using it if they choose to change the settings. Instead, it targets the hours when endless scrolling often becomes a habit rather than something useful. Whether the policy succeeds remains to be seen, but it is likely to be more acceptable than an outright ban. In the end, if governments want to address the effects of excessive social media use, balanced measures like this may have a better chance of improving young people's wellbeing without making them feel disconnected from the world around them.
