Every morning starts the same way: waking up to a slate I know nothing about. Some days, the morning air feels weightless. I step into the kitchen with my chest open and a quiet momentum at my back, ready to build something, to chase whatever it is I’m reaching for.
But other mornings, the noise starts before my feet even hit the floor.
The mind is already running its quiet, exhausting interrogation—questioning every choice, cross-examining every mistake, wondering if I’m running toward a life or just running away from doubt.
The House of the Mind
It is a strange thing to house both the match and the fuel. The exact same mind that builds your hope is often the one that tries to burn it down.
We look at the world around us and pretend everyone else is moving in straight lines. We scroll past the highlight reels and assume we’re the only ones stumbling.
-
Someone out there is finally holding a victory they’ve bled years to reach.
-
Someone else is sitting in a dark room wondering how their life unraveled so fast.
We share the exact same hours of the day, yet we live in entirely different universes.
And because we only see the polished surfaces of other people's lives, we start judging our messy middle chapters. One failure happens, and suddenly we treat it like a permanent tattoo. We let a single heavy season convince us that our entire future is stained.
We forget how to look up.
Still the Sky
Think about the sky. We call it "blue" out of pure habit, as if blue is the only thing it’s ever allowed to be.
-
The sky doesn’t panic when the grey rolls in.
-
It doesn’t apologize for the clouds.
-
The rain doesn't waste its time trying to convince us it's sunshine.
The weather shifts because that’s what weather does. Heavy grey spreads, night swallows the light, and stars break through a darkness that felt empty just hours before.
Through all of it, it’s still the sky.
Why do we refuse to give ourselves that same grace? Why do we tie our entire identity to the storm we happen to be standing in right now?
If you’re struggling, it doesn't mean you’re broken beyond repair. If you’ve failed, it doesn’t mean failure is all you are. You can feel completely discouraged without surrendering your ambition. You can admit that you are barely holding it together without pretending you’ve lost your last ounce of strength.
Growing Through the Dark
I am tired of trying to force my life into the boxes other people built for me. I am tired of apologizing for growing pains just because they don't look neat on paper.
Life doesn’t come with a guarantee that your hard work will instantly pay off, and it certainly doesn’t hand out answers on a silver platter. But you don't need to figure out the next ten years today. You just need to handle the ground right in front of you:
-
Take one honest step toward something you actually believe in.
-
Stop measuring your chapter two against someone else's chapter twenty.
-
Give yourself permission to weather the change.
Tomorrow, the weather will change. The sky might be clear, or it might pour rain before noon. You cannot control the storm, and you cannot force the sun to break through before it's ready.
But you don’t have to stay the person you were yesterday, either. Keep moving forward, and grow right through the dark.
