Robots throwing punches and kicks—and executing recovery moves, even after losing their heads during combat—marked the debut of the URKL in China, a freestyle combat competition for full-sized humanoid robots organized by Shenzhen-based EngineAI. The TH00 robot was designed to match the size and weight of an adult human and is capable of performing advanced combat maneuvers, including punches, spinning kicks, and rapid recovery after falls.
After millions of simulations, the robot learns on its own how to distribute its body weight, control leg thrust, and regain balance after every impact. When this training is transferred to physical robots, sensors distributed across the feet, hips, and torso perform hundreds of micro-corrections per second to compensate for any imbalance; the hardware, too, had to evolve alongside the software. The robots utilize high-torque actuators capable of generating rapid, extremely precise movements.
