Have you ever wondered what would happen if China—with its population of over 1.4 billion—managed to produce much of the meat it consumes without relying on massive herds, vast pastures, or record-breaking food imports? That is precisely one of the strategies China has begun developing to tackle a major national challenge: food security.

The expectation is that, in the coming decades, this technology will move out of the laboratory and reach an industrial scale. Studies linked to China's strategic planning indicate that, by the middle of the century, cell-cultured proteins could meet between 35% and 55% of the national demand for this type of food; achieving this will require combining advances in tissue engineering, industrial automation, and molecular biology with reduced production costs, making these foods competitive against traditional livestock farming.
