A human operator pressed against a wall by mechanical steel arms, injuries to the head, back and arms, the factory floor became a horrible scene, for decades such scenes belonged to the universe of science fiction, fueling the fear of machines out of control, but in recent years, real reports from the United States and China show that the dangers of advanced robotics are no longer Hollywood scripts.
In China, a video went viral showing a robot moving in an apparently chaotic manner inside a factory, the team exceeded the limits provided for its testing area and began to execute violent movements near employees. The images quickly fueled theories about machines out of control, but the reality was much simpler and precisely for that reason more worrying. Investigations pointed out programming errors and software glitches, the robot was not angry, it was simply doing exactly what the faulty code told it to do.
The problem becomes even more visible when robots begin to leave factories and enter public environments, at a technology festival in China, videos showing a humanoid moving unexpectedly towards people caused panic on social networks, some even spoke of machine rebellion, later, technical analyzes pointed out sensor calibration problems and common hardware failures, even so, these episodes revealed something important, a small unexpected movement is enough to generate psychological discomfort and distrust in those around.
Something similar happened with a Unitree G1 also in China, where the robot, while performing a choreographed and non-autonomous fighting movement, kicked a child who was watching it. Another recent case shows a humanoid going out of control in a restaurant and now with the arrival of increasingly autonomous systems, that is, they choose what to do without depending on remote control or pre-programmed choreography, the security challenge has changed a level.
