«Ok, ok, me convenciste. Lo compro. Jaja». Jordi soltaba una carcajada sonora.

«Eres un tonto, lo sabías. Jaja».

«Jordi, casi no llegas dormilón. Jaja».

Jaja». Taty se unía a las bromas.

«Cállense, no digan esas cosas».

The old tree

"Jordi, are you ready for our trip?" Isabel was asking her friend.

"More than ready. I want to get rid of this stress, noise and pollution of the city." Jordi was smiling a big smile.

"It's about time, friend. Taty and Robert also confirmed, so we're going to have a great time." Isabel was raising her arms.

"By the way, where are we going to go?" Jordi was putting his hand on his chin.

"To my town, where I lived most of my childhood, El Rosal." Isabel's eyes were shining.

"It has a very nice name."

"It's not just the name, the whole town is beautiful. The people are friendly, there are not many cars, the houses are simple and the weather is very pleasant." Isabel spoke as if she were in love.

"OK, ok, you convinced me. I buy it. Haha." Jordi let out a loud laugh.

"You're a fool, you knew that. Haha." Isabel was getting up from the desk. "I'm going to call Robert and Taty to let them know the meeting time."

"No problem. I'm going to finish making the reports." Jordi was starting to type on the keyboard.

The friends were getting ready to travel to El Rosal, they had three days to enjoy the rest and the enthusiasm was growing in each one. Friday had come so fast that they didn't even notice. Very early in the morning the friends gathered to start the journey. Jordi arrived in his car, a red Ford fiesta, which was a few years old, but still worked perfectly.

"Jordi, you almost didn't get there sleepy. Haha." Taty was winking.

"Sorry, folks, I was getting everything ready so we don't have any nasty little surprises on the way. Haha." Jordi was taking off his sunglasses.

"All right, guys, let's go fast or we're running late." Robert was getting in the car. "The girls are in the back. Haha." Robert was putting on his seat belt.

The girls were laughing and getting in the car. The roaring sound of the Ford was taking center stage and the friends were on their way to their destination. The imposing sun accompanied them, while the asphalt accompanied them on their journey.

After several hours, the friends were getting closer to El Rosal.

"Jordi, we should take a detour at that sign." Isabel was pointing excitedly.

"That old sign?" Jordi asked bewildered.

"Yes, the road is unpaved, so we must go carefully."

Jordi placed the directional light and slowed down. The road was dusty and had a lot of loose stones. The vegetation on the sides of the road was prominent, old trees finished adorning the surreal landscape. Jordi continued driving through that landscape, which gave them some chills. At that moment they passed by a big twisted tree, with huge roots, a parched bark and not a single leaf, it was a dead tree.

"Look at that horrible tree, I don't know why they don't hand it a chainsaw and make it some nice furniture. Haha." Robert was trying to cheer up his friends who had suddenly become quiet.

"It's true, it would look better as furniture or doors for my house. Haha." Taty joined in the banter.

"Shut up, don't say those things." Isabel looked terrified at her friends.

"What is the matter with you, Isabel?" Jordi was looking at her in bewilderment.

"There's a curse around that tree. When I was a child, they told me that we should keep silent and respect for that tree, otherwise something very bad could happen." Isabel looked at everyone with an inexplicable fear.

"Don't go around with stories, it was surely to scare you. How such an ugly old tree can cause so much fear. Haha." Robert was cutting the dramatic moment.

"Yes, Isabel, don't believe in village tales. You're already big. Haha." Taty was hugging her friend in a playful tone.

"Well, guys, let's stop talking about the damn tree. We are already coming to El Rosal." Jordi was pointing towards the small houses that looked at each other from the top of the road.

At that moment, gray clouds began to cover the sky, and a thunderstorm formed out of nowhere. Jordi accelerated to get to the village as soon as possible. The lightning was thunderous and fell violently, frightening everyone inside the car.

Jordi was speeding up the pace and about 50 meters from the entrance of the village, lightning struck a tree and one of the branches fell on the car. Jordi stopped abruptly, and the car turned off. The friends ran out of the vehicle towards the village.

"Calm down, guys, what happened to you?" An old man with a long white beard, leaden eyes and wearing a straw hat was receiving them.

"It's that lightning..., departed..., the branch of a tree..., and fell on...", Jordi was awkwardly articulating the words.

"Come to my house while the storm is passing and let's see the car." The old man wore a toothless smile.

Isabel and her friends were walking through the village that seemed deserted, while lightning and darkness dominated the sky of El Rosal. Isabel was looking at the whole place strangely, which was unrecognizable from those childhood times.

When they got to the old man's house, the rain started to get heavier. The friends entered the humble house, with walls lined with mud and straw. White candles provided the light. The friends looked at each other with bewilderment.

"Excuse me, sir, you know the Holguin family." Isabel was addressing the old man.

"No, a lot of people have left this town. There are only a few of us left." The old man was getting up to go to the kitchen.

"Great, we came for nothing, and now what will we do?" Jordi was getting up disgusted.

"We need to find someone to repair the car." Taty was trying to calm the spirits.

"I'm going to ask the old man if there is a mechanic in the village." Isabel was going to the kitchen to see the old man, but no one was there. She looked at her friends strangely. "The old man is not here."

"It is impossible. He went there." Robert got up and ran to take a look.

The others were going after Robert, at that moment, an afterlife laugh was heard. The friends looked at each other in fright and ran out of the place. It was still raining outside and a thick fog had covered the village. Red eyes appeared in the fog, the boys started running towards the car.

They arrived at the exit of the village, and began to run along that road that had become a quagmire. They came to the old tree, there was the old man.

"Sir, sir, something strange is happening in the village." Isabel was running, landing, towards him.

The old man was laughing ominously, and the bark of the old tree opened, showing an intense red, some red lianas covered with blood came out of the interior, these caught Taty, Robert and Jordi. The screams of terror broke the silence, while Isabel watched in horror as the lianas took her friends inside the tree.

Isabel ran up the path, and the old man was still laughing ominously, showing in his eyes, a deep red. Isabel fell into the mud and got up again and again. Tears were falling down her face and her lips were repeating over and over again.

"Sorry, sorry..."

The terrified Isabel reached the road and began to raise her arms to the cars that were speeding by. Desperately, he stood in the middle of the road and was screaming for help. A car was approaching at full speed; Isabel waved her arms frantically, but the car did not stop. She covered her face with her hands, and the car passed right through her. The old man appeared laughing ominously.

"Your soul is mine. Haha." A vine caught Isabel and took her inside the tree.

The screams of terror disappeared as the tree closed its bark. The old man stood on one of the branches and made four old trees appear, then vanished with the fog.

"Oh my God, those four guys got crushed by that branch."

The inhabitants of El Rosal gathered to see the sinister, while the morning sun rose over the small town.
