The Nightmare

A man was running through the dark hallways, accompanied by a faint, flickering blue-white light and the agonizing sound of a short circuit. He was gasping for breath; his breathing came in short bursts; his exhausted muscles begged for mercy, but he had to escape from whatever was chasing him. At one point in that horrible place, he fell and fixed his gaze on whatever was pursuing him. Two glowing circles were heading toward him at incredible speed. He had lost to it, and now they were coming for him; he covered his face with one of his arms and screamed.

“Ahhhh!”

“Demian, wake up, please.” A sweet voice came from the distance.

He opened his eyes and felt a gentle touch on his face. It was a soft hand caressing Demian’s cheek, and the light from the window fell on the sleeper’s face as he slowly awoke from his dream.

“What happened?” Demian rubbed his eyes.

“You had another nightmare, sweetheart.”

A beautiful face, white as porcelain, with blue eyes, a pert nose, and full crimson lips, drew near to Demian, who felt a kiss on his forehead. He shivered at the tickling sensation of love, which traveled from his forehead to the rest of his body.

“Juliet, my love. There’s nothing better than waking up to a delicious kiss.” Demian embraced his wife.

“Let me go, silly. I have a lot to do. Haha.” Juliet hurriedly got out of bed.

“Don’t go, stay with me, my delicious lover.” Demian flashed a mischievous smile.

“I’m going to work—sorry, my delicious lover. Haha.” Juliet slipped on a floral dress that hugged her beautiful figure. “Honey, I’m worried about those recurring nightmares. I’m going to take you to a psychologist. They say dreams and nightmares are signs that something’s going on in your mind.”

“Don’t worry about me—I’m sure it’ll pass. You know I’m really strong. Haha.” Demian flexed his scrawny bicep.

“No excuses, Superman. Tomorrow we’re going to see a psychologist. Now I’m off to work. See you tonight. I love you.” Juliet kissed Demian.

“I love you, too.”

Juliet left the room, and Demian watched her through the window as she hailed a taxi and disappeared over the horizon of the bustling city waking up to a new day. Demian returned to bed and closed his eyes...

A soft voice woke him up; he opened his eyes and found himself back in that place, with dark hallways and blue-white lights. Demian began to hear a soft voice coming from afar.

“Wake up, please.”

“Who is it?” Demian was groping his way around. “Tell me, where am I?”

A prolonged silence filled the room, and anxiety gripped Demian, who didn’t know what was happening or why he was there. The double doors at the end of the hallway swung open, and those two lights reappeared. The glare blinded Demian, who began to run, trying to escape the lights as they raced toward the terrified man.

“Help! Help! Please help me.”

Those lights had caught up with him, and the glow enveloped him, turning everything a blinding white...

“Wake up, please.” That sweet voice reached Demian’s eardrums.

Demian woke up in a panic, with a sharp pain in his chest and drenched in sweat; then he saw that his phone was ringing insistently. He picked up the device and answered the call.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Demian.” A piercing voice spoke with distressing seriousness.

“Who’s this?” Demian felt like ants were crawling through his stomach.

“I’m calling from Memorial Clinic. Your wife has been in an accident, and we urgently need you to come in.”

Demian dropped the phone and stared into space, still trying to process what he’d heard. An emotional shock was overwhelming him at that moment. The voice coming from the phone kept talking.

“Mr. Demian, Mr. Demian, can you hear me…?”

Demian regained his sense of reality, got dressed, and ran toward the hospital, his heart pounding like the hooves of a runaway horse, and traces of tears blown away by the icy breeze that pierced Demian’s anguished soul. After a while, the distraught man arrived at the hospital. The nurses led him to where Juliet lay, connected to several machines, an oxygen mask resting over her beautiful face.

Demian couldn’t contain himself and fell to his knees by the bed. The lump in his throat seemed to burst under the immense pain he was feeling at that moment. He gently took his beloved’s hand, and after a few minutes, he closed his eyes and fell into a deep sleep.

He heard that sweet voice from far, far away.

“Wake up, please.”

Demian lifted his head and found himself in those dark hallways. He stood up, bewildered. Those blue-white lights were flickering, and he began to scream in desperation.

“Where am I?!”

He began to walk somewhat erratically, holding onto the faded white walls. In an instant, the double doors at the end of the hallway swung open. A blinding light poured out from inside, like the flash of a fierce lightning bolt. The sweet voice continued to echo through that chilling place.

“Wake up, please.”

Demian let out a powerful scream.

“Who are you?”

Suddenly, the doors slammed shut. Darkness took over once more, while the blue-white lights flickered. At that moment, the two bright lights appeared and began racing down the hallway at full speed; Demian just stood there, no longer wanting to escape. He stretched his arms out to the sides and closed his eyes. The blinding white light pierced the man’s pupils as he surrendered to his fate.

Suddenly, memories came flooding back like flashes of light, rushing past his eyes: a car, a dark, rainy night, a fight, a bottle of whiskey. Demian saw himself behind the wheel; he was drunk and driving at full speed. A truck was barreling toward him at full speed. Demian couldn’t react; the alcohol had clouded his mind. Those lights grew brighter and brighter, completely blinding Demian. Finally, the loud sound of a horn made him open his eyes.

Demian found himself in that dark place, with flickering lights and peeling paint. At the end of the hallway, the double doors swung open. An incredibly bright light poured out, and a silhouette appeared, arms outstretched, and the sweet voice once again broke the silence of that gloomy place.

“Wake up, please.”

Suddenly, Demian felt an immense force pulling him toward the light. He wasn’t afraid and let himself be carried away. He closed his eyes and waited to see what fate had in store for him. Then he found himself back in the hospital room. Juliet was in bed with a ventilator on her face. Demian was weeping inconsolably; he took his beloved’s hand and asked for her forgiveness.

“Love, wake up, please. I need you with me,” Juliet whispered.

“Love, what did you say?” Demian looked at Juliet, bewildered.

“Wake up, wake up, wake up.” Tears streamed down Juliet’s cheeks.

Demian felt an electric current run through his chest and began to convulse. A new light appeared on the ceiling of the room, and everything became blurry. Demian’s eyes opened, and he saw some silhouettes.

“Doctor, we’ve got him back.” A nurse smiled.

“Mrs. Juliet, that cardiac arrest brought your husband out of his coma. He was very lucky.” The doctor stepped aside.

Juliet, bathed in tears, approached Demian and threw herself into his arms.

“Welcome back, love.”

Jaja». Juliet se levantaba presurosa de la cama.

«No te vayas, quédate conmigo, mi deliciosa amante». Demian pintaba una sonrisa traviesa.

«Voy a trabajar, lo siento, mi delicioso amante. Jaja». «Amor, me preocupa esas pesadillas recurrentes.

Jaja». Demian mostraba su escuálido bicep.

«Nada de excusas, súper man. Mañana iremos a psicólogo.

Demian andaba a tientas.

«Señor Demian, señor Demian, me escucha...».

Aquellas luces blanquiazules parpadeaban, empezó a gritar desesperado.

Demian desconcertado miraba a Juliet.

«Despierta, despierta, despierta».
