Addiction is a habit that one picks up and finds it difficult to stop. These habits can be the intake of substances that range from alcohol to hard drugs, and other behaviours like sex, video games, and other habits that can be harmful to an individual's health.
It is influenced by a person's biological traits and their environment. Addictions are cravings that the mind finds difficult to resist as time progresses. As we come of age, people tend to experiment and engage in certain behaviours which create room for addiction to take place
Addiction is not a choice; it is something that happens to an individual as a result of a continuous interaction with a certain substance or activity. The intake of these substances or the engagement in these activities may not look or seem harmful to the individual at the time until they become addicted and find it difficult to be without or to stop.
Knowing the dangers of addiction, I will say that only a person who wants to have their life short-lived will choose to be addicted to these substances or activities. Addiction starts by merely engaging in something and finding oneself having a good time doing it as one progresses, not knowing or minding the dangers or the lasting effects on one's life.
Our body wants what it wants, and sometimes we are unable to resist the desires of our body; by giving in to its desires, we find ourselves stuck in addiction. To think that addiction is a choice will be a misplaced thought because our desires sometimes are stronger than our mind can manage.
Everyone has picked up one or two bad habits growing up. While some can fight the habits, others find it very difficult to resist the temptation of these habits. While some individuals are to be blamed for their addictions, many individuals are addicted to drugs as a result of a prescription given to them by a trusted health professional.
A drug addict, for instance, may decide to quit drugs and may go for weeks or months without these drugs and then at some point, relapse; this does not mean that the individual is not willing to stop, or has a weak mind to stop. Relapses sometimes are part of the process of quitting, and it must not necessarily mean that one has failed to quit.
The easy part is deciding to stop, but the hard part is being able to hold on to the zeal a person puts into quitting from the beginning right to the end of the journey, as it is very easy to slip and relapse at any time.
Addiction is a disease and should be treated as such. People with addiction who have decided to quit should be shown compassion and support rather than being frowned upon or made to feel ashamed of themselves, as it will help them in their recovery.
While Addiction is not a conscious choice, the engagement and interaction with substances and behaviours are the choice of the individual; addiction only follows as a result of people ignoring the consequences until it becomes too late.
