My best learning environment is an environment where I can find guidance as well as interaction, someone to walk me through the processes, answer any questions I might have, and engage me constantly with problems to solve.
I can also be adaptive in learning, learning through experiencing things, which also happens even when I’m not consciously trying to. I find myself sometimes not aware that I have learnt something; I just find myself doing these things, which is when I realize that I must have learnt it somewhere and somehow without knowing when or how I came about the knowledge. I’m naturally observant, and I will say that I tend to absorb information from my surroundings without having to force it.
But when it comes to learning on my own terms, having to search for information myself or put effort into learning how to do something, I usually fail to accomplish it. In recent years, I have tried to learn many skills, ranging from graphic design, UI/UX design, programming and even data analysis, and all my efforts towards learning these skills to date have being abortive. I usually find them tiring and exhausting. Self-learning has always been difficult for me, which is one of the reasons I didn’t excel so well in college.
I will count myself as one of the bright ones in my set during my time in secondary school, because then I had teachers who taught me everything rigorously. Coming to a higher institution where I had to learn most things myself or put more effort caused me to have a poor performance in my academics, until I understood my leaning process, having to attend tutorials organized by my departmental association excos, fellowship excos, friends, as well as organizing one for my friends to help myself learn, I didn’t excel in my academics.
It is usually less exhausting for me to learn something new if I have a structure to follow, having a guide or instructor and someone I can be accountable to or learning with others in a small group, rather than putting myself through the stress of following tutorials on my own time. It is usually assumed that people learn better when they try to learn on their own, which has never been the case for me.
I haven’t tried to learn anything and then find it inherently difficult; it is usually my approach to learning that is usually the problem. All that I have learnt over the years, I have learnt with someone to teach me; I was able to use Corel Draw because a friend of mine came around to teach me some time ago and walk me through the process. What determines if learning something new is hard or difficult for me is whether or not I try to learn it myself or I have a well-structured learning process.
When People understand how or what works for them, they find it easier to learn. It is only when you don’t know what works for you, or when one chooses not to follow up with what works for them, that they find learning new things very challenging. No human is too unintelligent to learn new things; it can only take longer for some and less time for others. But the bottom line lies in knowing the learning approach that suits you best.
