I used to wonder if homeschooling was a better choice or whether the traditional mode was a better option. When I eventually become a parent, will I prefer to school them at home, or will I enrol them in a traditional school?
Homeschooling, as well as traditional schooling, has its advantages and disadvantages. Children who attend a traditional school, among other benefits, have the opportunity to relate to their peers; they can build relationships with other children in their class, which, to me, is one of the values a child gets from schooling. Children are exposed to other children, where they are able to learn teamwork and even learn other things that they are not accustomed to on a daily basis in their pirate environment.
A traditional school provides children with access to qualified teachers, teachers who are trained for the profession of training others, unlike homeschooling, except for only a few. Also, children are trained with a standard curriculum of the state or country of residence.
Another valuable advantage of traditional school is the presence of extracurricular activities, like sports, club activities and even art; a lot of children find they are good at some of these activities and are trained to represent their school in competition.
The challenge I have with the traditional school is that the child is limited to being taught only things in the curriculum. I, for one will like to have my children learn multiple languages and have knowledge of finance at a very early age. Aside from what they have in their curriculum, my children should be able to learn a craft or trade as they grow up and gain deep knowledge of what the computer system is and other valuable skills.
Homeschooling will enable me to add and subtract subjects in the curriculum, giving me the chance to have control over what they might or might not learn, it will also help me teach my children according to their pace, since every child has different abilities, and traditional schools usually wouldn’t work with the learning speed of each child, home schooling will give the parent the chance to work with the child’s learning speed.
Having to teach your child from home will help you have a stronger bond and make you spend more time with your children. Since it is the parent who teaches the child, the parent can set the time at their convenience.
The challenge that is involved in homeschooling, among others, includes limitations to the child's interactions with peers outside the home. Since the child is taught at home, there are chances that the child will have little to no interactions with other kids.
The resources available for the kids' learning, like sports facilities and labs, may be limited compared to a traditional school.
In conclusion, having to attend the traditional school and also homeschooling the child in the evenings, weekends and during holidays will help me blend the advantages of the traditional schooling system as well as homeschooling. Where traditional schooling is falling short, homeschooling will cover for it; and where homeschooling is not enough, the traditional school is there to cover for it too.
